HMM Names New VLCC Universal Leader at DSME
South Korea s Hyundai Merchant Marine has named its new very large crude carrier (VLCC) at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).
The vessel was named the Universal Leader during the ceremony held at the builder s Okpo shipyard in Geoje on January 29, 2019.

A containership struck a gantry crane at GCT Vanterm container terminal at the Port of Vancouver, Canada. The accident occurred in the early morning hours (local time) of January 28, 2019.

Klaveness: World s 1st Digital Survey Carried Out on Containership
Last week, classification society DNV GL and Klaveness Ship Management (KSM), part of Norway s shipping company Torvald Klaveness, performed a digital survey - claimed to be the world’s first - on board the containership MV Badru.
As informed, the digital survey saved surveyor Rolf Hancke a trip to Shanghai to visit the vessel and gave full insights into the maintenance data from the vessel through live dashboards from the company s headquarters in Norway.

New Liquefied Hydrogen Bunker Ship Design Unveiled
Design and engineering services company Moss Maritime has, in cooperation with Equinor, Wilhelmsen and DNV GL, developed a design for a liquefied hydrogen (LH2) bunker vessel.
The vessel design, made in response to the global ambition of reducing the environmental footprint from global ship transport, comes at a time when hydrogen is finally developing into a viable solution for the larger market, the partners explained.

CLdN Cancels RoRo Newbuilding Contract at Uljanik
Luxembourg-based transportation company CLdN RoRo has canceled a contract with Croatian shipbuilder Uljanik for the construction of one roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel.
The contract covering one 5,500 lane meter ship (hull no. 531) was terminated on January 27, 2019, according to a filing issued on the Zagreb Stock Exchange.

Scorpio Bulkers in Talks to Secure Scrubber Financing
Monaco-based owner and operator of dry bulkers Scorpio Bulkers is in discussions with its existing lenders and leasing companies on securing financing for the company s scrubber installation program worth USD 41.9 million.
In order to comply with the impending entrance into force of the 2020 sulphur cap, last year the shipowner entered into a deal to buy scrubbers for 18 of its vessels in 2019 and for 10 of its vessels in 2020.

CEVA Logistics: Shareholders Should Reject CMA CGM Offer
French shipping major CMA CGM could receive a rejection on its public tender offer for all publicly held registered shares of Swiss logistics company CEVA Logistics.
Following CMA CGM s offer with a nominal value of CHF 0.10 per share, revealed on November 26, 2018, the shipping company published its prospectus for the offer on CEVA shares with an offer price of CHF 30 per share on January 28.

IMB: Pirates Fire at Tanker, Bulker off Nigeria
Armed pirates attempted to attack two ships in two separate incidents off Nigeria last week, the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre said.
On January 24, 2019, a product tanker was fired upon while underway, around 35 nautical miles south of Brass.

Diana Shipping Inks Charter Deals for Two Bulkers
Greek dry bulk shipowner Diana Shipping has secured charter contracts for two of its vessels with Uniper Global Commodities and Phaethon International Company.
Under the respective deals, the company s Post-Panamax bulker Amphitrite and Panamax Naias are expected to generate USD 12.22 million of gross revenue for the minimum scheduled period of the time charters.

KKS Harbour To Handle General Cargo In Three Years
The Kankesanthurai area will undergo a major transformation with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority set to launch the Indian-funded Kankesanthurai harbour development project.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ports, Shipping and Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayaka and other senior officials will visit Kankesanthurai early next month to kick-start the USD 45.27 million project.

Port of Newcastle supports Hunter Region s construction and industrial growth
Port of Newcastle recorded another solid year of trade in 2018 with the Hunter’s construction boom and business investment helping drive growth in related cargoes.
The port handled 280,000 tonnes of cement in 2018, up almost 11% year-on-year, amid record construction in Newcastle and strong growth in surrounding local government areas.
