Container ship accident in Manchester Channel
Container ship RMS VERITAS reportedly allided with canal structure in Manchester Ship Channel early in the morning Oct 7, while approaching Irlam, Manchester. There was a dense fog at the time of an accident. No information on damages, the ship was to be surveyed by divers on Oct 8. As of afternoon Oct 8, RMS VERITAS was berthed at Irlam.

Tanker drug bust, Venezuela. Well, that s what they say.
Venezuela National Guard said in a press-release on Oct 8, that they found 147.5 kilos of cocaine attached to underwater hull of chemical tanker JOSE PROGRESS, berthed at Jose Petrochemical Complex, Jose, Venezuela. Tanker loaded with some 40,000 tons of methanol is bound for Belgium. Cocaine was found during underwater inspection, 20 crew are presently, under investigation, whatever it means in modern Venezuela.

Tanker disabled by fire, towed to New York
Asphalt tanker FENG HUANG AO suffered fire in engine room in the morning Oct 5 off Nantucket island, New England, USA, while en route Antwerp to New York with cargo of asphalt, said USCG on Oct 8. Fire was extinguished by activated fire suppression system, there were no injures to crew, but tanker was disabled. Tug was arranged, tanker was taken on tow on Oct 5 and towed to New York, arriving there on Oct 8.

Trident Alliance Calls for IMO Carriage Ban on Non-Compliant Fuel
Trident Alliance, a coalition of shipping owners and operators has called for the adoption without delay of IMO s Carriage ban on non-compliant fuel.
The alliance believes that "robust and effective enforcement is vital if the full health and environmental benefits of the 2020 sulphur cap are to be achieved while also preserving fair competition."

AIDAnova Begins Its First Voyage
In the evening hours of October 8, AIDA Cruises newest ship AIDAnova left the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, to be transferred on the river Ems to Eemshaven in the Netherlands.
During the Ems-transfer, AIDAnova passed the dock gate in Papenburg, the Friesen-bridge near Weener followed by the Jann-Berghaus-bridge in Leer.

NWSA Welcomes Back PIL s Ship after Four Years
Kota Pekarang, the 2017-built New Panamax containership, operated by Pacific International Lines, arrived at the Northwest Seaport Alliance s North Harbor on Saturday, October 6, making its maiden voyage to Seattle.
While the Singapore-based carrier has been operating at Terminal 30 for many years through various partner carrier agreements, the Kota Pekarang is PIL s first vessel to call the harbor since 2014.

UK s Autonomous Shipping Industry Gets a Boost
The autonomous and smart shipping industry in the UK is set to receive a boost with the recently unveiled funding of GBP 1 million (USD 1.3 million).
The funding has been awarded by the UK Government s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy s Regulators Pioneer Fund to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Department for Transport (DfT), in collaboration with the National Oceanography Centre s (NOC) Marine Robotics Innovation Centre.

21 Filipino Sailors Stranded in India
Twenty one Filipino crew members of MV Evangelia M, a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier, have been left stranded in Kakinada Port, India after their employer abandoned them three months ago.
"The crew has been stuck on board the vessel since it was abandoned by its Greek owners in June. The seafarers requested the assistance of the DFA in facilitating their immediate repatriation and in collecting their salaries," the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) of the Philippines said.

Silversea Cruises Places Orders for Three New Ships
The ultra-luxury and expedition cruise company Silversea Cruises, which recently joined the Royal Caribbean Cruises family, has unveiled its intention to order three new cruise ships.
Silversea signed a memorandum of understanding with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft to build two new vessels in a new Evolution Class. The first Evolution-class ship is expected to join its owner in 2022.

BW LPG Gives Up on Dorian LPG Merger
Provider of maritime gas transportation services BW LPG is withdrawing its proposal to combine with gas carrier owner and operator Dorian LPG.
The decision comes due to "Dorian s continued refusal to give a meaningful response to BW LPG s outstanding proposal, engage in constructive two-way discussions, or schedule its annual meeting," BW LPG said in a statement.
