NYK Takes Delivery of First Scrubber-Fitted VLCC
Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has taken delivery of the very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) Tanzawa, the first new NYK-owned vessel to include an SOx scrubber.
The vessel was handed over on October 3 during a naming and delivery ceremony at the Kure shipyard of Japan Marine United Corporation.
With the scrubber, the 311,374 dwt unit is compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) more stringent SOx emission regulation, which is scheduled to be implemented in January 2020.
The 339,5-meter-long ship will be about 23% more energy efficient, reducing CO2 emissions per unit of transport, exceeding the IMO EEDI phase 2 requirements that will become effective in 2020.
For further safety and optimal vessel operation, NYK has employed its integrated information and bridge system.

OET Exercises Option to Acquire ECO Suezmax Tanker Pair
Greek shipping company Okeanis Eco Tankers (OET) intends to exercise an option to acquire two ECO scrubber-fitted Suezmax tankers under construction at South Korean Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.
In April this year, OET was granted the option by entities controlled by OET’s sponsor and chairman, Ioannis Alafouzos, to add the 158,000 dwt tanker pair scheduled for delivery in August 2020 at the sponsor s cost of USD 64.5 million.
"As Suezmax values have risen and newbuilding delivery timelines extended into 2021 in the period since its granting, the option is presently well in-the-money and accretive to NAV," OET said.
"In addition, with the recent dramatic firming of the tanker spot and time charter markets and the availability of low cost, high LTV financing …, OET is highly confident that exercise of the option will require no new issuance of equity."
The company added it has received firm indications for low cost, high LTV pre- and post-delivery financing from multiple financial institutions.
What is more, in connection with the option exercise, OET and the sponsor have agreed to extend the maturity of the USD 15 million revolving credit facility - which remains undrawn at the date hereof - from Glafki Marine Corp. by six months, to December 2020.
Finally, OET and its chairman have agreed that repayment of ten percent of the option vessels’ total contract price settled between the sponsor and the shipyard in April 2019 may be deferred, at OET s sole discretion, to any date before the end of September 2021 with no interest, cost or penalty accruing on any outstanding amount during the period.
Okeanis Eco Tankers is a pure play eco and scrubber-fitted tanker company that owns and operates a fleet of seventeen crude oil and products tankers in the VLCC, Suezmax and Aframax/LR2 segments.

Maersk Tankers, Cargill and Mitsui Team Up to Cut GHG Emissions in Shipping
Maersk Tankers, Cargill and Mitsui & Co. have established a strategic collaboration to accelerate the reduction of global greenhouse gases (GHGs) within shipping.
The parties recognize the urgency required to tackle the global issue of climate change and are continually driving progress in their respective lines of business. Today, they are joining forces to accelerate these efforts and propel the maritime industry towards a more sustainable future.
Together, the companies will work towards lowering maritime GHG emissions by fully exploiting existing fuel-saving technologies and exploring new technical solutions. The aim is to prove that it can make economic sense for both owners and charterers if they work more closely together to make vessels more fuel efficient, thus demonstrating that sustainable shipping can also be commercially viable.
The collaboration, which is closely aligned with the International Maritime Organization s target for international shipping to cut annual GHG emissions by 50% by 2050, has a long-term objective of providing "over-the-shelf" solutions for maritime industry actors looking to explore new technologies to reduce their emissions.
"The collaboration will contribute to the sustainable growth of the shipping industry, whilst promoting a more environmentally conscious society," Takuya Shirai, general manager of the ship business division at Mitsui & Co., said.
Initially, the partnership will focus on testing and trials of existing proven technologies on ships under their command, with work already underway with several owners to invest in and install energy saving devices on board vessels under their charter.
These projects will involve measures to optimize vessel performance by sharing and using data from the vessel in conjunction with weather routing, as well as mechanisms that enable the benefits of improved performance to be shared by both owner and charterer. In parallel, the collaboration will explore new technologies that could potentially transform maritime emissions in the long-term.

First Phase of Ecuador s Posorja Deep Water Port Completed
The Posorja deep water port in Ecuador has started operations after the first phase of the port development project was completed two months ago.
Port operator DP World has invested USD 538 million in the first phase while the overall project is expected to cost USD 1.2 billion.
Posorja is expected to welcome an annual volume of 750,000 TEUs following the completion of the first phase.
DP World said the project would replicate Dubai s Jebel Ali port and freezone, making Ecuador a trade and logistics hub for South America s west coast, and opening a gateway for large container ships with capacities exceeding 10,000 TEUs.
Phase two of the project will be the development of "Posorja ZEDE", a special economic zone (SEZ) for maritime, logistics and light industrial businesses.
Once all works are completed, Posorja will have a deep water port with a capacity of 1.5 million TEUs, in addition to a 21 km access highway and a 21 nautical mile maritime access channel that is 16.5 meters in depth.
The Port of Posorja is a strategic partnership between the public sector and the private sector. DP World is responsible for the design, financing, construction and operations of the facility for a period of 50 years, following which the port will be handed over to the state.
"The new port and special economic zone will significantly improve Ecuador s global competitiveness and position the country as a dynamic business hub for the west coast of South America, following the model that has been tried and tested in Dubai and around the world," Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO, DP World, commented during a visit to the facility.

Keel Laid for Lindblad s 2nd Polar Expedition Cruise Ship
US-based cruise company Lindblad Expeditions Holdings and Norwegian Ulstein Group recently celebrated the keel laying of Lindblad s second polar newbuild.
The occasion at the CRIST shipyard in Gdynia, Poland, on September 18 also served as the official naming ceremony of the vessel.
National Geographic Resolution, the newest polar expedition vessel, is a sister ship to the National Geographic Endurance which is being finalized at Ulstein Verft.
Scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2021, National Geographic Resolution will expand the company s fleet to four ships. It is seen as the next phase of Lindblad s fleet expansion following the launches of National Geographic Quest in July 2017, National Geographic Venture in December 2018 and the scheduled delivery of National Geographic Endurance in Q1 2020.
The 126-passenger Polar Class 5 Category A vessel will feature Ulstein s X-BOW, a bow that provides fuel efficiency, and a very high ice class for access deep into polar regions. The ship s expanded fuel and water tanks provide for extended operations in remote areas while the zero-speed stabilizers will ensure stability, whether at zero speed or full steam ahead, Ulstein explained.
Lindblad Expeditions works in partnership with National Geographic to produce marine expedition programs and promote conservation and sustainable tourism around the world.
