Navig8 Chemical Tankers Adds 4 Ships to Odfjell Pool
Norwegian tanker owner and operator Odfjell SE has reached an agreement with the UK-based Navig8 Chemical Tankers (N8CTI), where the latter will add four 25,000 dwt stainless steel chemical tankers to Odfjell s existing pool, the Chempool25.
Following the delivery of the tankers, the pool will total nineteen vessels with Odfjell contributing with ten, CTG with five and N8CTI with four ships.
Odfjell will continue to be the operator of all vessels in the pool.
"We are pleased to welcome N8CTI as a partner. N8CTI brings first-class vessels to the pool, and we look forward to the cooperation and to further develop our pool partnerships," Kristian Morch, CEO of Odfjell SE.
"With this expansion, Odfjell will operate one of the largest fleets of modern 25,000 dwt stainless steel chemical tankers in the world. This is another step in consolidating the chemical tanker industry," he added.
As informed, the ship quartet is expected to enter the pool during the first quarter of 2020.
The Chempool25 fleet operates as part of Odfjell s total commercial fleet of around 80 chemical tankers, trading around the world.

Unifeeder Takes Majority Stake in The Feedertech Group
Short-sea operator Unifeeder has acquired a 77% stake in The Feedertech Group, a Singapore-based feeder and shortsea operator, the company announced.
As informed, the remaining 23% shareholding in the group will be retained by the group s Chairman, Ali Maghami.
Established in 2003, the group operates two companies; Feedertech, which is a feedering service and Perma, a regional shortsea network. Both operate in the same market and connect the fast-growing trade route of Asia-Middle East via the Indian Subcontinent.
The group generates annual revenue of close to USD 200 million from a diversified customer mix, calls at 50 ports and transports over 600k TEU annually.
Unifeeder, which was acquired in 2018 by Dubai-based port operator DP World, said that the acquisition is in line with its parent s growth ambitions.
"Both Feedertech and Unifeeder share similar business models and a desire to reduce inefficiencies, and by combining the expertise of the two entities, we believe we can deliver a high-quality product for our customers. Furthermore, being part of the DP World family will allow us to benefit from their deep relationship with end-customers and a wide global network," says Ali Maghami.
Through Feedertech and Perma, Unifeeder will now have the capability to offer feedering and regional shortsea connectivity in Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Indian Subcontinent.
As explained by Unifeeder, the expansion also enables opportunities in the fast-growing coastal shortsea trade on the Indian Subcontinent, complementing the existing India logistics strategy of DP World.
"This is yet another strategic step in our vision to build a global presence, offer a broader network of solutions to customers and leverage the way we engage with them to make the most comprehensive and integrated solutions across multiple geographies," Jesper Kristensen, CEO of Unifeeder, commented.
"Feedertech s asset-light business model and approach to preserve the common-user independent platform that focuses on flexibility, reliability and providing sustainable logistics solutions, made it a clear fit for Unifeeder."
The deal is expected to close by the year-end.

ACCC Seeks Views on Ocean Liner Shipping Class Exemption
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a discussion paper seeking comments on a possible class exemption for ocean carriers providing international liner cargo shipping services to and from Australia.
Liners currently have access to broad exemptions from Australia s competition laws.
These exemptions are set out in Part X of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth) (the CCA) which permits liner shipping operators to enter into agreements with each other about commercial matters such as freight rates, the vessels to be used, and the quantity and kinds of cargo carried on particular trade routes.
Part X allows operators to make these agreements without risk of breaching competition laws, as long as the agreements are appropriately registered.
However, the 2015 Competition Policy Review (Harper Review) of competition law found that the liner shipping industry s exemptions under Part X, put in place during the 1960s, are outdated, unnecessary and should be repealed.
The Harper Review recommended that the ACCC develop a class exemption for liner shipping agreements. This class exemption would only apply to agreements that are not likely to substantially lessen competition or are likely to result in overall public benefits.
As explained, a class exemption would help clear the way for the repeal of Part X.
Specifically, it would provide legal protection for certain types of coordination among liners and their customers without them having to apply to the ACCC.
"Australia s Part X regime is one of the most permissive of its kind among developed countries, several of which have recently moved to scale back their own competition exemptions for liner shipping," Rod Sims, ACCC Chair, said.
"These sorts of exemptions have become harder to justify, as cargo ships have become bigger and the industry has consolidated."
"We recognise, however, that some limited co-ordination between liners visiting Australia may be in the public interest, by supporting efficient shipping services. This consultation process will allow us to examine how liners co-ordinate, so we can make sure the proposed class exemption would only apply to conduct that is clearly beneficial," Sims added.
"We are also keen to hear from the industry about whether the class exemption should extend to collective bargaining by cargo owners and their representatives," ACCC Chair continued.
The ACCC invites submissions in response to the discussion paper by 28 February 2020.

Carriers must train their crews for IMO 2020 or risk criminality, warns seafarer union
Seafarer representatives are increasingly worried that the forthcoming IMO 2020 low-sulphur regulations could result in a spate of criminal convictions.
Seafarer union Nautilus International said a recent case involving a P&O Cruises vessel in the North Europe special emission control area (SEVA), which extends from the Channel to the Baltic Sea, set a worrying precedent, following which seafarers could find themselves with a criminal conviction if they fail to correctly manage the switchover to low-sulphur fuel for the beginning of next year.
.In the case last year, the first of its kind, France fined the master of P&O's Azura €100,000 ($110,300) for using fuel that was 0.18% over the sulphur content limit, "setting a precedent for criminalising masters for the quality of fuel on their vessels".
Nautilus explained that its members were "increasingly alarmed by the prospect of being scapegoated for problems through no fault of their own, linked to the 0.5% cap on the sulphur content of fuel".
Penalties for non-compliance with the new 0.5% limit vary around the world, but some countries will look to impose "big fines or lengthy jail sentences, as well as ship detentions", he said.
The union added that there were additional concerns about the technicalities of the 1 January switchover, including "incidents of power loss when changing fuels, lubrication issues, filter problems and leaks", and greater support was needed from shipping companies to prepare their employees for the new regulatory regime.
Nautilus professional and technical officer David Appleton said: "While we firmly support the moves to improve the shipping industry's environmental performance, it's clear that IMO 2020 is imposing a massive new burden on seafarers, both in terms of workload and in their exposure to potentially huge fines and criminal convictions.
"It's essential that shipping companies do all they can to provide their masters, officers and crews with the training and resources required to ensure compliance with the new rules.
"These are complex requirements, with complex and varied enforcement mechanisms, and our members need to be protected against the threat of legal proceedings arising from inadvertent infringement of the rules," he added.
