CMA CGM Picks Marseille-Fos for Bunkering of LNG-Fueled ULCVs
French container shipping major CMA CGM has chosen the port of Marseille-Fos for the bunkering of the company s future 15,000 TEU LNG-powered vessels.
The choice of Marseille-Fos as a strategic hub in the Mediterranean for the supply of LNG was announced by Rodolphe Saade, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group on the occasion of the French Maritime Economy Conference being held in Montpellier from December 3 to 4, 2019.
Separately, LNG player Total said it signed an agreement with CMA CGM for the supply of about 270,000 tons per year of LNG over ten years. The contract will result in the launch of a dedicated supply chain in the port of Marseille-Fos. Total will position an LNG bunkering vessel at the port of Marseille-Fos and provide a complementary bunkering solution in Singapore.
"As the leading French port, Marseille-Fos thus reinforces its attractiveness by offering LNG bunkering solutions for the supply of ultra-large container vessels, following the examples of the major Northern European ports," CMA CGM said.
"This decision will perpetuate and develop the Marseille-Fos LNG activity, thus creating additional jobs."
Earlier this year, CMA CGM ordered ten new 15,000 TEU containerships in China of which five will be powered with LNG. The LNG-fueled newbuilds will operate between Asia and the Mediterranean from 2021.
In 2017, CMA CGM became the first in the world to order LNG-powered 23,000 TEU boxships. The first of these, the CMA CGM Jacques Saade, was launched in September 2019 and will make an exceptional call to Marseille in June 2020.
During the conference, Saade also recommended that French President Emmanuel Macron initiate an international coalition for the energy transition of the transportation sector whose priority will be to develop a more competitive and less carbon-intensive energy source.
As informed, CMA CGM CEO stressed the need to improve the cooperation of all those working on near-term solutions to replace fossil fuels in the transportation and logistics sectors. The French President accepted to actively support this initiative, whose first forum may be held within the World Conservation Congress which will be organized in Marseille in June 2020.
Formalized during the French Maritime Economy Conference, the "Eco-Energetic Transition of the Maritime Sector" project, led by the French Maritime Cluster, the French Environment & Energy Management Agency (ADEME), Bureau Veritas and CMA CGM, is the first step towards this future international partnership. The aim is to carry out an inventory of available technologies and new developments in ship propulsion. The data collected will help guide and structure future work, according to CMA CGM.
Finally, during his speech, Saade shared his vision of the future of the maritime industry, with a focus on logistics and digitalization. This year, CMA CGM completed the acquisition of logistics company CEVA Logistics, transferring its headquarters to Marseille. The group has also proceeded with its digital transformation and is carrying out numerous projects in the fields of blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI).
CMA CGM s fleet comprises 506 vessels serving more than 420 ports around the world.

Ammonia-Fuelled 23,000 TEU Boxship Design Gets AIP
UK-based Lloyd s Register (LR) has granted Approval in Principle to Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC), and MAN Energy Solutions for an ammonia-fuelled 23,000 TEU Ultra-Large Container Ship (ULCS) concept design.
The concept is said to be the first ammonia as fuel design of its kind in China, and it is viewed as the first step in exploring and testing low carbon alternatives such as ammonia.
"The "C-FUTURE" solution is another pioneering initiative of DSIC on the development of green ships and clean energy applications," Yang Zhizhong, President of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, said.
"Enabling vessels to operate with low emissions has been an aim of MAN Energy Solutions two-stroke portfolio for many years and we continuously introduce engines capable of operating on such clean fuels as LNG, methanol and ethanol," Bjarne Foldager, Senior Vice President, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions - commented.
"As such, low-speed marine engines are already the most efficient propulsion system for trans-oceanic shipping, making them the de-facto, standard powertrain for commercial vessels. In this respect, developing ships fuelled by ammonia makes perfect sense as it has the potential in the future to be created from renewable, primary-energy sources such as wind, hydro or solar," Foldager added.
LR has also granted AiP to China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd. (CMES), CNOOC Gas and Power Group, DSIC, and Gaztransport and Technigaz SA (GTT) for an LNG-fuelled VLCC design that uses a prismatic GTT Mark III membrane LNG tank.
The main objectives of the AiP include developing a specification for a dual fuel VLCC that meets the IMO s GHG 2030 emission limitations and preparing the relevant design drawings.
"CNOOC is building LNG bunker vessels and planning to build four international LNG bunkering stations along the Chinese coast. We are very happy to work together with the four partners in this project to promote LNG as a marine fuel," Qiaoyu, General Manager of the LNG bunker project, CNOOC Gas & Power Group, said.
"Implementing an LNG dual-fuelled propulsion system could enable the introduction of a new generation of efficient and environmentally-friendly VLCCs, which we re immensely proud to be part of. This dual fuel capability helps the Chinese and international community meet shipping"s GHG challenges and help optimise CAPEX and OPEX costs," Mark Darley, LR North Asia President, added.

Essar Shipping to Install Scrubbers on Four Ships
India s shipping company Essar Shipping is planning to install scrubbers on four out of its 12 owned vessels as part of its preparations for the 2020 sulphur cap.
The ships in question include three minicapes and one VLCC, the company said, while the rest of the fleet will switch over to low-sulphur fuel.
Essar Shipping estimates the installation of scrubbers to be completed by April/May 2020.
"With the installation of scrubbers, the capital expenditure recovery (payback period) may be 18 to 24 months depending on differential of prices between higher sulfur heavy fuel oils (HSHFO) and LSHFO," the company explained.
"However, there are some challenges that need to be taken into account. While forecasting in this business, there are numerous variables that come into play, such as, demand and supply of tonnage, number of ships that are currently trading, the number of ships that will be scrapped, the number of ships that would be installed with scrubbers, the number of ships that are being ordered, the commodity cycle of a particular vessel, etc."
As disclosed, it is estimated that the present requirement of approx. 400 million ton of HSHFO will have to be replaced with compliant fuels, while approx. 15-20% of 400 million tons will be handled by vessels fitted with scrubbers.
The cautious approach to scrubber installation is also impacted by the expected recession and resulting low demand for deadweight tonnage (DWT) from the shipping industry.
According to the latest estimates from the Exhaust Gas Cleaning System Association (EGCSA), there will be at least 4,000 ships fitted with scrubbers in 2020.
The scrubber installations have gravitated towards the larger vessels and vessels with high installed power where the economics of the investment versus the lower fuel cost are projected to give a high rate of return.
The majority of the installations are open-loop scrubbers that use seawater as the process fluid and discharge the treated and continuously monitored water overboard.

MOL, Total Pen Deal for 2nd LNG Bunker Vessel
Total Marine Fuels Global Solutions (TMFGS) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) have signed a long-term charter contract for a second large LNG bunker vessel, to be delivered in 2021.
The bunker vessel will be built Chinese shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and will have a capacity of 18,600 m³.
Once delivered in 2021, it will be positioned in the Marseille-Fos area in France.
The LNG-fuelled ship will be about 135 meters long and fitted with the Mark III membrane containment system provided by French company GTT.
This vessel has been specifically designed to supply LNG bunker in the Mediterranean area to a wide range of vessels, including containerships, tankers, ferries and large cruise ships.
The newbuild vessel will be operated under the French flag by MOL jointly with GAZOCEAN.
This agreement follows the launching of Total’s first LNG bunker vessel last month in Shanghai, which will supply LNG bunker to CMA CGM 23,000 TEU containerships in Northern Europe once delivered in 2020.
"This is the second LNG bunker vessel for Total, and we are extremely honoured that the company has selected us as a partner," Kenta Matsuzaka, MOL Managing Executive Officer, said.
"In recent years, the role of LNG has changed enormously. LNG of course, serves as a clean energy source, and we expect to see wider use for it as a vessel fuel, so we anticipate significant growth in the future. At MOL, we take a proactive stance in the LNG fuel business and will contribute to achieving global UN s Sustainable Development Goals through this project."
The order coincides with the agreement signed by LNG player Total with CMA CGM for the supply of about 270,000 tons per year of LNG over ten years.
As reported by World Maritime News, the contract will result in the launch of a dedicated supply chain in the port of Marseille-Fos. Total will position an LNG bunkering vessel at the port of Marseille-Fos and provide a complementary bunkering solution in Singapore.
