Sailors Society responds to image of seafarer's suicide that has shocked the internet
Sandra Welch, deputy CEO of Sailors Society, a charity which supports seafarers, said, "This tragic image is a wake up call to the maritime industry.
"The publishing of such an image, which has understandably provoked criticism, highlights just one case of many that go unreported around the world every year."
Sailors Society, which runs a Wellness at Sea programme and a global Crisis Response Network, conducted a survey into seafarers mental health with Yale University. The results highlighted that more than a quarter (26) per cent of seafarers show signs of depression.
Seafarers said that isolation from their families and length of their contracts can have a big impact on their mental health.
Sandra added, "The facts are stark, more than a quarter of seafarers suffer from depression and many won't ask for help.
"It is up to ship owners and the maritime industry to put seafarers first.
"Seafarers carry more than 90 per cent of global trade; we owe it to them to look after their mental health as they carry out this vital and incredibly difficult job."
A previous study from the International Maritime Health journal showed that 5.9 per cent of deaths at sea are attributable to suicide - and this increases dramatically if suspicious cases of probable suicides - seafarers who went missing at sea - are taken into account.
Less than one per cent of deaths in the United Kingdom in 2017 were recorded as suicide.
Sandra said, "One suicide is one too many. The fact that six times as many deaths at sea are attributable to suicide highlights how urgent an issue mental health at sea is."

Shipping Industry Major Cuts Back on South African Cadets
Maersk, the largest container shipping company in the world, was reported in an American maritime paper over the weekend to have confirmed a new long-term strategy that involves reducing by a significant number the recruitment of cadets from South Africa.
Maersk has its regional head office in Cape Town and its container ships are frequent callers at the ports of Durban, Ngqura, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. In addition the company operates various other types of ships, including tugs and tankers, and is involved in the oil prospecting industry with oil rigs and support vessels.
The Danish company told an online portal: "As part of Maersk Line's long-term crew strategy we have decided to adjust the sourcing areas for our international cadet intake. This will result in a significant reduction of cadets that we recruit from countries such as South Africa."
The company said the new strategy would ensure that cadets already enrolled would be given the opportunity to complete their contractual training period in order to qualify as an officer of the watch, which would enable recruits to seek qualified employment on ships.
AP Moller-Maersk is the owner and operator of former South African shipping company Safmarine, which continues to operate under its original brand as a division of Maersk.
Safmarine ships, however, have become very rare visitors to South African ports in recent years.
Maersk will also be reducing the number of cadets that it previously raised in the UK, and it has few if any ships still flying the British flag, said sources.

Dutch Maritime Firms to Jointly Study Methanol as Marine Fuel
Dutch shipowners, shipyards, manufacturers and ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam have joined forces to study methanol as a marine fuel ahead of the IMO s 2020 sulphur cap.
The consortium, supported by Maritime Knowledge Centre, would look into the feasibility of methanol as a sustainable alternative transport fuel in the maritime sector.
"As part of the project, the partners will look at concrete possibilities to adopt methanol as marine fuel on either newbuilds or conversions of the existing fleet," Pieter Boersma, Business Director Maritime & Offshore of TNO, said.
Shipowners Boskalis, The Royal Netherlands Navy, Van Oord and Wagenborg Shipping will take part in the consortium, together with shipbuilders, Damen Shipyards, Feadship, Royal IHC and engine manufacturers Pon Power and Wärtsilä together with VIV, as well as equipment suppliers Marine Service Noord and service providers C-Job Naval Architects.
Work to study the infrastructure and supply chain for methanol is also addressed by the participation of The Netherlands two largest ports, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, as well as methanol suppliers BioMCN and Helm Proman and trade organization The Methanol Institute.
The Netherlands research institutes, including TNO, TU Delft, NLDA and Marin, also invest in this theme and provide knowledge-building and research capacity for the project.
The Green Maritime Methanol project, supported by TKI Maritime and the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, is expected to be completed within two years.

MAIB: Ferry Hit Pier, Grounded due to Loss of Control
The ferry Pride of Kent struck a jetty and then grounded while departing Calais, France, in December 2017 amid loss of control.
According to a report by the UK s Marine Accident Investigation Branch, control of the ferry during the turn towards the harbour entrance was lost due to the fast rate of turn, strong gale-force winds, use of full rudder and propeller pitch, and the tripping of one of the ferry s bow thrusters.
The UK-registered vessel was refloated later that day and subsequently moved to a berth where the passengers disembarked. The ferry s starboard propeller and tail-shaft were damaged and required repair in dry dock. The jetty was also damaged. There were no injuries to crew or passengers and no pollution.
MAIB informed that the omission of a departure briefing to the bridge team contributed to the master not being fully supported, and the helm not being closely monitored. Additionally, the occasional tripping of bow thrusters and reduced engine speed and shaft speeds were associated with fuel pump issues experienced following a change to ultra-low sulphur fuel.
Following the incident, the ship s operator, P&O Ferries, has developed a simulator-based programme of training for masters to include, among other things, machinery failures and emergencies.
The company also highlighted to its fleet the requirement for effective bridge team briefings, contingency plans, and allowances for deficiencies in vessel performance, amended its fleet regulations with regard to bridge resource management and tug requirements, and reverted to the use of MGO on board Pride of Kent pending assessment of the problems associated with ULSFO.
Furthermore, P&O Ferries introduced a procedure to monitor the performance of its bridge teams with a focus on bridge resource management, including the effectiveness of helmsman training, taking into account the value of onboard assessments. Finally, the company developed and implemented a plan for monitoring and assessing the impact of ultra-low sulphur fuel on the reliability and performance of Pride of Kent’s propulsion should it be re-introduced in the future.

Maersk Launches Demerger, Separate Listing of Maersk Drilling
Danish shipping giant Maersk has decided to initiate the separation of its drilling activities through a demerger and separate listing of Maersk Drilling Holding.
The company said that the shares in Maersk Drilling and its subsidiaries, as well as certain other assets and liabilities, will be contributed to a new company, Maersk Drilling Listco. The shares will be admitted for trading and official listing on Nasdaq Copenhagen.
Following the signing and publication of statutory demerger documents on March 4, 2019, Maersk intends to propose the demerger for approval by the shareholders on April 2, 2019.
Subject to such approval, the shares in Maersk Drilling Listco will be distributed to Maersk shareholders, who, in addition to their shareholding in the company, will become shareholders in Maersk Drilling Listco.
The anticipated first day of trading for the shares of Maersk Drilling Listco on Nasdaq Copenhagen is on April 4, 2019.
The APMM Board of Directors intends to propose a single share class structure for Maersk Drilling Listco with shares in Maersk Drilling Listco being distributed to the APMM shareholders on a pro-rata basis based on the nominal value of the shares in APMM.
Shareholders will receive one share in Maersk Drilling Listco per nominal APMM DKK 500 share and two shares in Maersk Drilling Listco per nominal APMM DKK 1,000 share.

Hyundai Merchant Marine CEO to Step Down Next Month
Hyundai Merchant Marine s (HMM) president and CEO, Chang Keun Yoo, has decided to resign from his position next month, the South Korean shipping company confirmed to World Maritime News.
As informed, Yoo will formally announce his resignation at the upcoming shareholders meeting scheduled for the end of March 2019.
C.K. Yoo started his term two and a half years ago to oversee the company s restructuring efforts and lead HMM into the new era of growth.
The decision comes despite the term extension given to Yoo in March 2018.
"It is not easy for me to decide to leave HMM in the middle of this critical moment of "war on loss" with the 2020 challenges looming on the horizon but I comfort myself with the thought that HMM has become much healthier than before," Yoo said in his farewell message to HMM employees.
He added that the key cornerstones have been laid for the company s sustainable and profitable growth after 2020.
Earlier this year, HMM CEO announced that 2020 will be a year of quantum leap for the company. The leap would be led by the newly ordered 23,000 TEU containerships but also by investments in IT, global network, education and improvement of customer service.
Commenting on the projects launched during his tenure, he further said: "Ultra large containerships with scrubbers are under construction and the tasks of securing the hub terminals supporting the growth of volume have been completed with the agreement on Busan terminal reached of late. Our I/T capability will be enhanced in line with our expansion plan."
“The new era requires new leadership,” Yoo pointed out, expressing his hopes that the company and its employees would write “a new history of HMM” under the new leadership.
