Wartsila to Equip Finnlines Ferries with Hybrid Systems
Finland-based technology group Wartsila will supply its hybrid power conversion system for three new RoRo ferries being built at the Nanjing Jinling shipyard in China for Finnlines, a part of the Italian Grimaldi Group.
Wartsila won the order in Q4 2019.
The hybrid solution, which includes a 5,000 kWh energy storage system, will enable these ships to operate with zero emissions while in port and to meet the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) Green Plus class notation. They will also have Ice Class classification 1A Super, the company said.

SFL Offloads VLCC, Terminates Charter with Frontline
Bermuda-based SFL Corporation has sold and delivered Front Hakata, a 2002-built very large crude carrier (VLCC).
Although the buyer of the 324,021 cbm vessel has not been disclosed, Vessels Value s data shows that the company in question is based in China.
Separately, Frontline said it has agreed with SFL to terminate the charter for Front Hakata following the ship s sale to a new owner.

ABS, ClassNK Award AIP to Kawasaki Heavy for LPG as Fuel System Design
Classification societies ABS and ClassNK have granted approval in principle (AIP) to Japanese shipbuilder Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) for the company s LPG as fuel system design.
A dual-fuel engine capable of using both marine diesel oil and LPG as fuel, KHI claims the system simultaneously reduces fuel consumption and enables the engine to meet NOx Tier 3 regulations.

COSCO, OOCL, ONE and Yang Ming to Set Up New Transatlantic Service
Asian shipping giants COSCO Shipping Lines, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Yang Ming are to launch a new weekly Transatlantic service, the new East Mediterranean - America service (EMA).
As informed, the first voyage is scheduled for April 2020, subject to FMC filing.
To be jointly operated by the four lines, the service will deploy six Panamax vessels.

Golden Ray Removal Plan Gets Green Light
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has given the approval to the Unified Command (UC) for the St. Simons Sound Incident Response for the plan to build an environmental protection barrier (EPB) around the grounded car carrier Golden Ray before the wreck is cut into sections and removed.
The plan to build the barrier was developed in coordination with the owners of the vessel and is designed to protect the environment from pollution and debris.

General cargo ship sank in Indonesian waters, crew rescued
General cargo ship GRAHA ANGKASA 1 issued distress signal in the evening Feb 3, reporting flooded engine room, sinking, and requested assistance. The ship was sinking in waters of Serei, North Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. SAR boats from Serei Fleet Base were deployed, all 12 crew were rescued in challenging weather conditions. The ship was loaded with some 3000 tons of unidentified cargo, bound for Morowali, Central Sulawesi.

APM Terminals Eyes Deepwater Port Development in Georgia
Terminal operator APM Terminals Poti has presented its plans to the Government of Georgia for the creation of a deepwater port.
As informed, the project would require an investment of over USD 250 million of private capital for phase 1 and a substantial amount for phase 2 in extensive development of the port infrastructure and superstructure.

The Vietnam National Shipping Lines Corporation (Vinalines) has set sights on joining the global shipping alliances.

India: Exporters also allowed to pay handling charges directly to terminals bypassing lines
The Centre has allowed exporters also to pay terminal handling charges (THC) directly to the terminals, bypassing the shipping lines, to cut logistics costs and promote ease of doing business.
To start with, Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House, which serves Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India s biggest container gateway, issued a public notice to implement the new rule with effect from February 5.

Container traffic through Qatar ports 6.26mn tonnes at end of December
The overall container traffic through various ports in Qatar was 6.26mn tonnes at the end of December last year, according to the official figures.
The net tonnage through Qatar s ports witnessed more than 49% shrinkage year-on-year; while it increased about 9% month-on-month in December 2019, said the figures released by the Planning and Statistics Authority in its latest monthly bulletin.

Philippines keeps ports open to all ships despite virus fears
The Philippines said on Wednesday its ports remain open to all ships, even those from China, in order not to disrupt the cargo supply chain, but the crew of vessels arriving from the coronavirus-hit nation will be barred from disembarking.
All foreigners travelling from China and its two special administrative regions - Hong Kong and Macau - are currently barred from entering the Philippines amid a fast-spreading coronavirus outbreak that has killed nearly 500 people in China.

DP World handles 71 million TEU and reports 1.0% volume growth in 2019
DP World handled 71.2 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) across its global portfolio of container terminals in 2019, with gross container volumes flat year-on-year on a reported basis and up +1.0% on a like-for-like[1] basis.
Like-for-like gross volumes in 4Q 2019 accelerated to +2.1% with growth driven by Asia Pacific and Africa.
