NRF: New Tariffs Could Affect Import Growth at Container Ports
Imports at the nations major retail container ports are expected to dip slightly this month as a result of annual Asian factory shutdowns for Lunar New Year, the National Retail Federation said. Although the volumes this month would not be affected by the new tariffs on steel and aluminum, which were imposed on March 8, they could eventually have an impact on the ports. "With steel and aluminum tariffs already in place, new tariffs on goods from China being threatened and the ongoing threat of NAFTA withdrawal, we could very quickly have a trade war on our hands," Jonathan Gold, NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy, said

Greek bulk carrier with Turkish and Syrian seamen seized in Libyan waters
Bulk carrier SANTORINI was intercepted by Libyan forces on Mar 11 in Libyan waters off Susah, for allegedly, "sailing into Libyan waters, namely waters off Derna, without authorization". Libyan forces had to fire warning shots to compel SANTORINI to stop and allow military team to board the ship. The ship was taken to anchorage off Ras Al Hilal, east of Susah. SANTORINI left Alexandria on Mar 9, port of destination unknown, probably there s more in this seizure, than the lack of "proper authorization". 21 crew include Turkish and Syrian nationalities.

MAERSK HONAM probably already on tow Mar 11 Update
As of 0800 UTC Mar 11, MAERSK HONAM was in vicinity 09 46N 065 54E, some 760 nm southwest of Mumbai, probably already on tow. Port of destination unknown, my guess is, it s Mumbai. All containers in fore section, from f’castle to superstructure, understood to be total loss, all hundreds of them. According to Indian Coast Guard officials, who re undoubtedly, possess the information provided by Maersk, among the containers in fore section were containers with flammable liquids and solid cargoes, oxidising substances, toxic and infectious cargoes, and corrosive materials. Some cargo in one or several containers inflamed or exploded, there s little doubt about that.

Predictive Maintenance-Share Information for Knowledge to Grow
Maritime maintenance is changing fast. The industry is moving away from costly forms of traditional maintenance towards smarter condition-based maintenance, otherwise known as predictive maintenance . This development is facilitated by the emergence of new technologies involving the Internet of Things, improved analysis and storage of Big Data, and the fall in price of increasingly powerful sensor components. With the impressive ambition to reach the point when ship and equipment maintenance can be 100 per cent predictable, Fieldlab SMASH is working with several maritime companies in so-called Living Labs . The potential benefits of reduced maintenance costs and increased uptime show that, both economically and logistically, there is a lot to be gained from this area of research.

Cyber Security at Sea: The Real Threats
The maritime cyber security landscape is a confusing place. On the one hand, you have commercial providers suggesting the risks of everything from a hostile attack on ship s systems which allows the vessel to be remotely controlled by pirates and direct it to a port of their choice, or causing a catastrophic navigation errors, a phishing attack or ransomware on the Master s PC. While on the other, you have sensible people who point out that this notion is nonsense due to the number of fail safes and manual overrides and controls in place. Then there are calmer voices still, who point out that the most likely threat is actually to the servers inside your head office, or a man in the middle attack on your company’s bank accounts.

Duluth in running for ship commissioning
The Twin Ports may be called to stand in for the Twin Cities, when the U.S. Navy commissions a new 389-foot littoral combat ship - the future USS Minneapolis-St. Paul. Navy Under Secretary Jodi Greene, a Minnesota native and the ship s sponsor, recently took part in a ceremony to mark the laying of the keel at Fincantieri Marinette Marine, the Wisconsin shipyard that s building the vessel. It could still be a couple of years until the Minneapolis-St.Paul is ready for commissioning and the location for that event has yet to be selected, but Duluth is definitely in the running to host the new $360 million ship.

Both sides also announced a new phase of cooperation in space security focussed on the maritime domain and a fresh logistics agreement that will allow their defence forces to closely cooperate on mutually agreed operations.
