BC Ferries Spirit-Class Duo Completes LNG Conversion in Poland
The second of two Spirit-class ferries has wrapped up its stay at Poland s Remontowa Shiprepair Yard, marking the completion of BC Ferries LNG Conversion project.
Spirit of Vancouver Island got underway from Gdansk on February 28, 2019, after spending three months at the yard as part of its mid-life upgrade.
Spirit of Vancouver Island is the second of two units to undergo the upgrade after the Spirit of British Columbia received the same treatment in the first half of 2018.
Remontowa equipped each ferry with four new dual-fuel Wartsila 8L34DF main engines and a cryogenic tank. Currently, the ships engine rooms are dual fuel, adapted to be fed both with low-sulfur diesel oil and natural gas (stored as LNG) as the main fuel.
Other upgrades have included the renewal of navigation and propulsion equipment as well as passenger areas.
The LNG conversion project was delayed by a year after BC Ferries deferred it to ensure sufficient equipment procurement lead times, detailed engineering and necessary regulatory approvals, and perform additional financial due diligence.
The two Spirit-class vessels consumed approximately 15 per cent of BC Ferries annual fuel costs and their conversion to dual-fuel is expected to lead to operational savings and environmental benefits.
BC Ferries awarded the conversion contract to the Polish shipyard in March 2016. Remontowa s competitors for work on the conversion project included Seaspan s Vancouver Shipyards and Fincantieri of Italy.

RINA, Fortune Technologies Partner Up on Digital Solutions for Shipping
Italy s classification society RINA and Fortune Technologies, a Greek provider of integrated maritime software solutions, have entered into a strategic alliance.
As informed, the two companies intend "to make value added services for the Greek and global shipping market."
Specifically, RINA aims to further enhance its presence in the maritime market, and in particular within the digital technology sector. This will be achieved by further developing the RINACube digital platform with Fortune Technologies, which provides IT and maritime ERP systems.
By leveraging RINA s network and know-how, as well as Fortune Technologies specialization in maritime ERP, the two companies seek to provide integrated solutions and applications to the shipping industry.
Fortune Technologies is a Maritime Microsoft Dynamics NAV Solutions partner. Through this collaboration, shipping companies are expected to have even greater access to Microsoft technology while enjoying worldwide support from RINA.
"We are excited to partner with RINA because this partnership aligns with our core strategy on many fronts," George Frydas, Managing Director, Fortune Technologies, said.
"Our combined energies will help our customers with greater insight in order to make more informed decisions in the current competitive shipping environment," he added.
"To provide digital solutions to the marine market, not only covering traditional services such as ship classification but also contributing to adding value to shipowner s assets, RINA is investing in a network of reliable partners like Fortune Technologies to expand the potential of RINACube," Paolo Moretti, Executive Vice President Marine, RINA, explained.
"Thanks to powerful analytics and machine learning, our digital platform is already able to convert data into useful actionable information to provide, among other services, efficient ship performance management," Moretti further said.
Cooperation has already begun and the duo will unveil more details shortly.

DP World Australia Prepares to Face Strike
Operations at DP World Australia (DPWA) container terminals could suffer significant disruptions due to the upcoming industrial action of local stevedores.
Up to 1,800 workers will go on strike at Fremantle Terminal, Port Botany Terminal, Brisbane Terminal and Melbourne Terminal, commencing March 19, 22, 22 and 23, respectively, DPWA said after being notified by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA).
The announced industrial action is a result of discontent among employees over a new enterprise agreement DP World is proposing.
"Wharfies working at container terminals in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle are outraged after management at DP World Australia - the largest stevedore in the country - moved to strip them of income protection insurance unless they accepted the company s demands," according to MUA.
Stevedores were recently granted approval from the Fair Work Commission (FWC) to hold a ballot allowing protected strike action.
However, the FWC imposed a requirement that workers provide management five days notice before going on strike.
"The protected industrial action advised to date includes bans on employees working in tasks above their normal grade, overtime, shift extensions, accepting late call ins and no advanced or delayed start times. It also allows for one-hour and in the case of Fremantle 24 hour work stoppages," DP World informed in its customer update.

Meyer Turku Floats Out Costa Cruises First LNG-Powered Ship
Finnish Shipbuilder Meyer Turku has floated out Costa Smeralda, the first LNG-powered ship in the Costa Cruises fleet.
The float-out of the 180,000 GT cruise ship marks the beginning of the final stage of construction, before the ship s scheduled October 2019 delivery.
Costa Smeralda is part of an effort of Costa s mother company, Carnival Corp, to bring the world s first LNG-powered cruise ships into operation.
Meyer Turku has worked together with sister shipyard Meyer Werft, Papenburg to make the LNG propulsion plant for the vessel.
"With LNG a breakthrough in fuel technology, Costa Smeralda represents a major innovation for the international market and an important step toward setting new standards for the entire sector," said Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises.
Once it begins operation in the second half of 2019, the ship will start its first cruise from Hamburg sailing via Rotterdam, Lisbon, Barcelona and Marseilles to Savona, Italy, where a naming ceremony will be held.

Airbus and WSS Start Shore-To-Ship Drone Delivery Trials
Wilhelmsen Ships Services and Airbus have begun shore-to-ship trials of a new parcel delivery drone in Singapore.
The two companies pointed out that this marks the first time drone technology has been deployed in real port conditions, to deliver a variety of small, time-critical maritime essentials to working vessels at anchorage.
The maiden shore-to-ship delivery flight was made to the Swire Pacific Offshore s anchor handling tug supply vessel M/V Pacific Centurion, 1.5km from the shoreline of Singapore s Marina South Pier, carrying 1.5kg of 3D printed consumables.
After depositing its cargo to the shipmaster, the Skyways unmanned air vehicle returned to its base, with the entire flight taking within ten minutes.
Though small drone delivery trials from tugboat to ship have been conducted before by a number of shipping companies and service providers, shore-to-ship delivery of this range and scope has never been explored, prior to this trial, Wilhelmsen Ships Services (WSS) noted.
During the trials, Airbus Skyways drone will lift off from the pier with a payload capability of up to 4kg, and navigate autonomously along pre-determined aerial corridors to vessels as far as 3km from the coast.
"Less labor dependent than delivery via launch, autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can potentially reduce delivery costs by up to 90% in some ports and have a smaller carbon footprint than launch boats," WSS said.
"The now proven, seamless operation of drone deliveries from shore-to-ship, in one of the world s busiest ports, proves the hard work, investment and faith we, and indeed our partners, placed in the Agency by Air drone delivery project over the past two years was not misplaced," Marius Johansen, VP Commercial, Wilhelmsen Ships Agency, commented on the successful first delivery flight.
"We are thrilled to launch the first trial of its kind in the maritime world," Airbus Skyways lead, Leo Jeoh, said.
"Today s accomplishment is a culmination of months of intense preparation by our dedicated team, and the strong collaboration with our partner, as we pursue a new terrain in the maritime industry."
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is facilitating the trial, which started in late November 2018, through the interim use of Marina South Pier as the launching and landing point for Airbus delivery drone. At the same time, MPA has designated anchorages for vessels to anchor off Marina South for the trial. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore is also working with Wilhelmsen and Airbus to ensure safety of the trials.
