Hapag-Lloyd Cruises: Hanseatic Nature s Launching Ceremony Canceled
German cruise line company Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has canceled the launching ceremony for the first of its three new expedition ships.
The newbuild, Hanseatic Nature, was planned to be launched in Hamburg on April 12, 2019.
However, Vard shipyard, part of the Fincantieri Group, needs more time to finalize the construction of the cruise ship.
For this reason, the maiden voyage from Hamburg to Lisbon and delivery of the vessel will also be delayed, according to Hapag-Lloyd.
The 16,000 gross ton expedition cruise vessel will be 139 meters long and 22 meters wide. The vessel has seven passenger decks, with accommodation for 230 passengers.
The Bahamas-flagged ship will be a German-speaking ship, with all cruises conducted in German only.
Its two sister ships - Hanseatic Inspiration and Hanseatic Spirit - are scheduled to join the company s fleet in October 2019 and in 2021, respectively.

APM Terminals Inaugurates New Container Terminal in Costa Rica
APM Terminals Moin, a new container terminal in the Caribbean Sea just off the coast of Costa Rica, was inaugurated last week.
As informed, the completion of the terminal will enable products to be shipped on transatlantic routes to European and Asian markets without transshipment.
The project represents a total investment of USD 1 billion and is built on a 40-hectare artificial island. The terminal has a 650-meter long pier and a container yard with the capacity to hold 26,000 TEUs, including power connection capacity for 3,800 refrigerated containers.
The construction of the terminal in Costa Rica was completed by a consortium of Van Oord and BAM International.
According to the terminal operator, the region will attract a very high percentage of the ships that transit through the Panama Canal. The number of shipping routes that reach the APM Terminals Moin is projected to increase by as much as 285 percent.
This 100% owned greenfield development is part of the 30-year concession to operate the terminal.
"We are proud that the country has trusted APM Terminals with the mission of developing and operating this amazing port. A concession that also brings socioeconomic opportunities to the community, the country and the region," Kenneth Waugh, Managing Director of APM Terminals Moin, commented.
The six gantry cranes and the 29-yard cranes represent a USD 110 million investment and will allow the terminal to continuously perform an average of 180 movements per hour for loading and unloading. These efficiency standards will significantly reduce vessel service times from 40 hours to just 15 hours.

COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Orders Pulp Carrier Quartet at Dalian Yard
China s shipping company COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers has exercised options to build four 62,000-ton multipurpose pulp carriers.
The company said it signed an agreement with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) shipyard for the construction of vessel quartet on March 1, 2019.
The ships are expected to be delivered between the late 2019 and 2021. The company will pay USD 33.5 million per ship, according to data provided by Asiasis.
Last year, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers ordered five identical 62,000-ton pulp carriers. The order included four options which needed to be confirmed by March 7, 2019.
As explained, the move is in line with the company s development strategy focused on seizing opportunities in the global pulp market.
Back in 2017, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers also ordered three 62,000 dwt pulp carriers at Dalian yard. The ships will carry cargo of Brazilian pulp and paper company Suzano Papel Celulose.
COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers, part of China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited Company, operates a fleet of more than 100 vessels, including multipurpose and heavy lift vessels, semi-submersible vessels, pure car carriers, logs carriers as well as asphalt carriers.

Intercargo: Dry Cargo Owners Preparing for Landmark Changes
This year signifies a year for dry cargo owners to prepare their vessels in view of landmark changes in shipping, the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (Intercargo) noted during its meetings in Hong Kong on March 4 and 5, 2019.
The association re-iterated its commitment to a safe, efficient, high quality and environmentally-friendly dry cargo shipping industry and its support for an industry governed by free and fair competition.
At the meeting, Intercargo covered a number of topics, including safe carriage of cargoes and investigation of casualties; air emissions; ballast water management; as well as port reception facilities.
"The importance of investigating incidents and the subsequent publication of casualty investigation reports in a timely manner, in order for lessons to be learnt, cannot be overstressed," according to Intercargo.
Moisture related cargo shifting, widely referred to as liquefaction, continue to be a major concern for dry bulk shipping. Although there were no reported loss of life or vessel attributed to liquefaction in 2018, the association urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant as cargo liquefaction continues to pose a major threat to the life of seafarers.
While the ship operators need to be especially cautious when loading cargoes (prone to liquefaction) during wet season, as currently being experienced in certain parts of South East Asia, "it is paramount that the shippers and the local authorities fulfil their obligations as required by the IMSBC Code."
Regarding the 2020 sulphur cap regulation, the association said that it "cannot ignore the safety issues that are likely to arise with this important regulation. The successful, effective and orderly implementation of the regulation rests not only with ship operators but equally with the IMO Member States and with suppliers who need to secure the worldwide availability of safe compliant fuels - a particular problem for ships in the dry bulk tramp trades."
Additionally, Intercargo said it remains committed to investigating the ongoing practical problems in retrofitting existing dry bulk ships with BWM systems and operating them. Implementation challenges also include adequate worldwide spares and service support for these systems, the availability of proven systems, which can perform under all conditions.
"Achieving the effective implementation of the BWM Convention requires the manufacturers and ship operators to work closely together. We urge the port States not to develop more onerous local requirements for ballast water on top of IMO s Convention."
Finally, compliance with the discharge requirements of MARPOL for cargo residues and cargo hold washing water which may be Hazardous to the Marine Environment (HME) depends largely on the availability of adequate Port Reception Facilities (PRFs), the association noted.
"The non-availability and adequacy problems of PRFs unfortunately continue. We would urge a more effective system by IMO for information collection and sharing to ensure compliance."
“For our industry and our members, 2019 represents a year of preparation for the consumption of 0.5% m/m sulphur content fuel oil. Ship implementation plans should be in place and applied at the earliest opportunity," Dimitrios J. Fafalios, Intercargo s Chairman, said.

Yang Ming: Another Two 14,000 TEU Containerships Launched in Japan
Two new 14,000 TEU containerships chartered by Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming have been splashed in Japan.
The launching ceremony took place at Imabari shipyard on March 6, 2019.
Named YM Warranty and YM Wellspring, the newbuilds are the fourth and the fifth of the five 14,000 TEU ultra large container vessels (ULCVs) Yang Ming chartered from Shoei Kisen Kaisha.
YM Warranty and YM Wellspring - both flying the flag of Panama - currently have a market value of USD 95.6 million and USD 99.1 million, according to data provided by VesselsValue.
They belong to the same type as YM Wellbeing, YM Wonderland and YM Wisdom which were delivered to Yang Ming recently.
The ships are designed with a nominal capacity of 14,220 TEU and equipped with 1,000 reefer plugs. Each of them features a length of 366.44 meters and a beam of 51.2 meters. The vessels can reach a speed of up to 23 knots.
Since 2015, a total of 20 newly-built 14,000 TEU full-container vessels have been added to the Yang Ming fleet. YM Warranty and YM Wellspring are the last two of them and will join Yang Ming s service in the near future.
In addition to the 14,000 TEU vessels, Yang Ming will also deploy its own ten 2,800 TEU ships and fourteen chartered-in 11,000 TEU ships, which are to be delivered between 2020 and 2022.
As of November 2018, the company operated a fleet of 101 vessels with a capacity of 7.44 million dwt or 643 thousand TEUs.

Whitepaper: IMO 2020 Regulation to Drive Freight Rates up
With fuel costs constituting over 50 percent of operating expenses already, the upcoming IMO 2020 regulation is bound to present carriers and shippers with uncertainty, Seabury Maritime said in a whitepaper published on March 4.
Produced in cooperation with Gemini Shippers Group, the whitepaper shows that what today costs approximately USD 1,600 to ship a container from China to the USEC, would cost USD 600 more after the IMO 2020 regulation comes into force.
"The 2020 deadline to reduce sulfur oxide emissions is one of the most significant regulations impacting liner shipping in recent memory," commented Seabury Maritime vice president Nikos Petrakakos.
"With fuel costs already representing more than 50 percent of total operating expenses, the IMO 2020 poses an increase too significant for carriers to absorb and stay operational."
The whitepaper details that the lack of industry standard for fuel-surcharges computation or a clear picture of the underlying costs for low-sulfur fuel allows participants to only roughly estimate its economic impact. Several factors affecting a carrier’s calculation of the fuel surcharges add omplexity, making transparency ever so paramount to building trust on both sides.
"Through our collaboration with our partners at Seabury Maritime, we have identified the inherent risks and cost drivers represented by the IMO 2020 regulation. Our desire to add transparency to the issues will help shippers and carriers alike navigate the 2019-2020 contracting season," Kenneth O’Brien, COO of Gemini Shippers Group, said.
"The intention of this whitepaper is to promote open dialogue between carriers and shippers by providing insight and a general understanding around metrics used behind bunker calculations," Petrakakos added.
