Fincantieri Takes Minority Stake in Genoa Shipyard
Italy s Fincantieri and the 2008-founded shipbuilder Genova Industrie Navali (GIN) have reached a cooperation agreement covering new buildings, ship repair, conversions and outfitting.
The deal with the Genoa shipyard, which was formed by the merger of two historical shipyards T. Mariotti and San Giorgio del Porto, provides for the acquisition by Fincantieri of a minority stake in GIN Group s holding company and an option for a minority stake in T. Mariotti.
Fincantieri said that its stake would allow GIN "to achieve further financial strength, an increasingly important asset to face complex projects and to overcome market challenges, especially in the field of small and medium-sized luxury cruise ships construction."

Vancouver 1st North American Port to Join SEA\LNG Coalition
British Columbia s Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has become a member of SEA\LNG, the multi-sector industry coalition aiming to accelerate the widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel.
The port authority is the federal agency of the Port of Vancouver, Canada s largest port, and the fourth port member to join the coalition.
Apart from the Port of Vancouver, the Port of Rotterdam, Yokohama-Kawasaki International Port Corporation (YKIP), and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) are also members of SEA\LNG.
"We are pleased to welcome the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to our growing coalition and look forward to leveraging their expertise to realise our vision of developing LNG infrastructure in ports around the globe to enable quick, safe, and cost-effective bunkering," Peter Keller, SEA\LNG chairman, commented.
As explained, SEA\LNG s vision of a global LNG value chain for cleaner maritime shipping by 2020 has clear synergies with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and British Columbia s efforts to drive further use of natural gas in the Canadian region.
The port authority is working closely with the regional gas supplier, Fortis BC, and with industry, academia and government to advance LNG bunkering in the Port of Vancouver.
"As part of our vision to be the world’s most sustainable port, we engage in a number of emissions management initiatives that help support a healthy environment. This partnership with SEA\LNG represents an opportunity for us to be part of a multi-sector group that is reducing marine shipping emissions and improving air quality," Duncan Wilson, Vice President, Environment, Community and Government Affairs of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, said.

Containerships Expects Improved Results in 2019
After delivering a loss in 2018, Finland-based Containerships plc, a subsidiary of the CMA CGM Group, expects an improvement in its results during 2019.
The company said its net sales are expected to grow and the EBITDA to improve compared to the previous year.
Containerships delivered a net loss of EUR 1.7 million in 2018, against a profit of EUR 0.2 million reported in the previous year. Net sales for the period grew to EUR 268 million from EUR 226.7 million reported a year earlier, but the operational result weakened.
Recorded EBITDA was EUR 13.3 million, down from EUR 15.2 million seen in 2017. The decrease was caused by increased bunker costs due to a rise in oil price in the world market.
In 2018, various geopolitical, economic and legislative events impacted the logistics market in Containerships area of operation. Nevertheless, there were no changes in the operating environment dramatically affecting the group s activities or performance in 2018, according to the company.
Following final approvals received in October 2018, Containerships Plc became part of CMA CGM s
operations in Europe and the Mediterranean.
CMA CGM announced in January 2019 that as from April 1, 2019, the Containerships and MacAndrews brands would unite under the name Containerships. By joining forces of these two intra-European multimodal transporters, the CMA CGM Group would develop an intra-European leading brand.

Port Kembla Gas Project Readies for Execution Phase
Since its launch in March 2018, Australia’s Port Kembla liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal project has entered the last stage of preparation for the Final Investment Decision.
According to the Australian Industrial Energy (AIE), the project is now the most advanced of the proposed LNG import projects in Australia.
The site within Port Kembla has been selected, Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) has been completed, the FSRU vessel has been secured, the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has been submitted and reviewed.
Additionally, a number of key commercial contracts, including LNG supply, port access, shortlisted EPC contractors, and customer offtake agreements, are nearing finalization. Based on AIE s extensive Environmental Impact Statement, the company said it is hopeful of obtaining NSW Government development consent in the coming weeks.
"The project sponsors are now establishing an organisational structure to carry the project into its construction and operations phase," AIE said.

Resolve Marine Appointed to Deal with Solomon Trader Incident
Korea Protection and Indemnity Club (KP&I) has appointed the US-based maritime salvage company Resolve Marine to oversee the Solomon Trader incident response in the Solomon Islands.
Earlier this week, some onboard power of the grounded bauxite bulker was restored, enabling a deck crane to lift key salvage equipment on board.
"The task of transferring some 600 tonnes of fuel oil on the vessel to higher and safer tanks is progressing, with a view to the oil being pumped to a barge," the vessel s protection indemnity insurer said.
"Another priority is dealing with some 70 tonnes of fuel oil that has leaked into the coastal waters. Boom placement and shoreline cleaning is underway, in accordance with recommendations from international oil spill experts."
According to KP&I, salvage divers are on standby to conduct external examinations of the hull and, if possible, plug hull breaches with sealing compounds. These activities will be done when weather permits.
Weather conditions have pushed much of the leaked oil to sea where it has dispersed, however, some oil has caused "unacceptable" coastal damage, KP&I added.
As World Maritime News earlier reported, the 73,592 dwt Solomon Trader carrying over 700 tons of heavy fuel oil ran aground in Solomon Islands Rennell and Bellona Province on February 5, 2019. Chartered by Indonesian-based Bintan Mining, the ship was loaded with nearly 11,000 tons of bauxite at the time of the incident.
As the oil spans five to six kilometers across the shore and is moving towards the adjacent World Heritage area, the Solomon Islands government has requested assistance from Australia to contain the oil spill moving toward the UNESCO listed area due to "a lack of action by commercial entities involved".
In response, Australia mobilized an offshore pollution mitigation operation, including equipment, ships and specialized personnel.
On March 6, the ship insurer KP&I and vessel owner King Trader apologized to the people of the Solomon Islands following the bauxite carrier’s grounding on a sensitive reef, expressing "deep remorse".
Moreover, the duo stressed that "reports of the Solomon Trader crew being absent from the vessel or intoxicated at the time of the grounding are false."
King Trader secured a local tug to try and remove the vessel in a timely manner, however, the situation worsened with the arrival of Cyclone Omar, which pushed the stricken vessel harder into the reef, resulting in hull and engine room damage. Several factors have impacted and delayed the salvage response, including the vessel s power being lost, as explained by KP&I.
In addition, the remote and hazardous location has made it difficult to secure local resources and it has been time-consuming bringing in resources from other locations.
Limitations of the local airstrip mean that heavy equipment including pumps and generators have had to complete the final part of their journey by sea. Inclement weather has made it difficult and at times impossible to access the vessel, and conditions have been too dangerous for external underwater inspections - a key assessment ahead of salvage operations.
Another setback was the vessel being ransacked once the crew was evacuated, resulting in onboard resources that may have assisted with the early response being removed or damaged, the two companies further said.

IMO: World Maritime Day 2019 to Raise Gender Equality Awareness
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality at this year s World Maritime Day with the "Empowering Women in the Maritime Community" theme.
In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the theme would also highlight the important, yet under-utilized, contribution of women within the maritime sector.
It gives IMO the opportunity to work with various maritime stakeholders to foster an environment in which women are identified and selected for career development opportunities in maritime administrations, ports and maritime training institutes and to encourage more conversation for gender equality in the maritime space.
"Empowering women fuels thriving economies across the world, spurs growth and development, and benefits everyone working in the global maritime community in the drive towards safe, secure, clean and sustainable shipping," IMO s Kitack Lim earlier said.
A series of activities and events will be held during 2019 related to the theme Empowering Women in the Maritime Community. Events will include the 3rd International conference on Empowering Women in the Maritime Community at the World Maritime University, Malmo, Sweden, to be held in April, World Maritime Day Parallel Event 2019 in Cartagena, Colombia, and Celebration of World Maritime Day at IMO Headquarters, both scheduled in September.

Gujarat Maritime University announces launch of its academic activities
Dr. J. N. Singh, IAS, Chief Secretary announced the launch of the academic activities of Gujarat Maritime University through the launch of its website. The University kick starts in the upcoming academic year 2019-20 by commencing its School of Maritime Law, Policy and Administration and shall be offering 2 Post Graduate courses viz. LLM in Maritime Law and LLM in International Trade Law. The establishment of Gujarat Maritime University (GMU) is an endeavor by the Gujarat Maritime Board to provide a fillip to the growth of Indian Maritime Sector and bridge the knowledge gap within the industry.
Government of India has also taken proactive initiatives for development of the port sector. However, when it comes to maritime services, as a Country, Dr. Singh said India have become a net importer of these services. He added that the focus till now has been more on creating world class ports and in the process, the country has established more than 130 institutes catering to maritime education. The concentration of more than 90% of these institutes, however, has been on technical education. Resultantly, the prospects of commercial education in this sector has remained largely unexplored unlike developed Maritime Countries. This is where the Gujarat Maritime University will be a value differentiator.
Mr. Mukesh Kumar, IAS, the CEO of GMB who would be the Provost during the initial period said that Law in the context of maritime sector is a niche area as trade that takes place in the sea or things that occur at sea are very different from the everyday laws as these matters also involve international regulations and policies. Very limited opportunities for skill development are available in the country for those who are keen to pursue a career in these subjects.
In the first phase, Gujarat Maritime University plans to offer only programs catering to the commercial aspects of Maritime value chain like maritime law, shipping finance and economics, maritime management, logistics, ship broking, ship finance, chartering, ship management just to name a few.
The first phase will also have short term Executive Development Programs and Management Development Programs. The second phase will focus on the technical aspects. For this, the Gujarat Maritime University is also exploring possibilities of collaboration with global institutes of repute to start short term programs for working professionals.
Gujarat National Law University has been identified as the transitory campus for the Gujarat Maritime University till the time the University has a campus of its own. Parcels of land near the knowledge corridor are being identified for this purpose.

MICP District Collector Erastus Sandino Austria said Wednesday that all country operations managers of international shipping lines and officials of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) reached an agreement to load out more empty containers per day in an attempt "to bring yard utilization to ideal levels and resolve the recurring issue on the difficulty in returning empty containers."
