Norwegian container ship damaged in collision in Bremerhaven
Container ship RUMBA went out of control after generator failure at around 1200 LT Apr 10 at Bremerhaven, Germany, while maneuvering to berth, on arrival from Hamburg. MPA Singapore Grants Funding to Digital Startups
Thirteen out of the seventeen technology startups which participated in Singapore s Smart Port Challenge (SPC) 2018 will each receive SGD 50,000 (USD 36,853) in seed funding from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
With this seed funding, these startups can now develop and test-bed their innovative solutions that were close to reaching the market.

Port Houston Speeds Up Widening of Houston Ship Channel
The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority has moved to accelerate widening of the Houston Ship Channel, the nation s busiest waterway.
The authority is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other representatives of the federal government, as well as Port of Houston and Houston Ship Channel stakeholders, to obtain authorization, and accelerated funding and completion, of a deepened and widened of the 52-mile federal waterway.

APM Terminals Launches The Gothenburg Gateway
Terminal operator APM Terminals Gothenburg has launched The Gothenburg Gateway, a new concept in Swedish logistics.
With this move, the company ensured that a container placed on a freight train anywhere in Sweden is loaded onto a large ocean-going vessel within 48 hours. Additionally, the approach is expected to reduce the transit time to Shanghai by at least a week.

South Africa Green-Lights Use of Scrubbers in Its Waters
South Africa has decided to allow the use of exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) in its territorial waters and ports ahead of the IMO 2020 regulation.
According to an advisory notice issued by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) to shipowners, operators, master mariners and bunker suppliers in March, the authority said that the use of open-loop, closed-loop and hybrid systems was accepted until further notice.

Naval Dome: Shipping Needs to Be on Red Alert for Cyber Attack
As the maritime sector is being targeted by highly motivated cyber criminals, the shipping industry should be on the highest alert for a cyber attack, Itai Sela, CEO of cyber security specialist Naval Dome, said.
Speaking today at the Singapore Maritime Technology Conference (SMTC) 2019, organized by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Sela warned:"Somebody, somewhere is targeting the maritime sector. The shipping industry should be on Red Alert."

Spectrum of the Seas Delivered to Royal Caribbean
German shipbuilder Meyer Werft has handed over Spectrum of the Seas, the first cruise ship in the Quantum-Ultra class, to cruise line Royal Caribbean International.
The 169,000 gross ton newbuild - designed specifically for the Chinese market - was delivered to its owner in Bremerhaven on April 11, 2019.

Celebrity Cruises Orders Fifth Edge-Class Unit
Celebrity Cruises, part of Royal Caribbean Cruises, has ordered a fifth Edge-class ship from French shipbuilder Chantiers de l Atlantique.
The yet-to-be-named ship is scheduled for delivery in the fall of 2024.

MPA invests $7.2m in projects on autonomous shipping
Singapore is banking on autonomous shipping, with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) investing $7.2 million in five projects on such vessels.
One of them - a collaboration between the MPA, ST Engineering, Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co and British ship certifying body Lloyd s Register – aims to develop navigational intelligence for ocean-going vessels.

Dublin Port sets new container charges to make space for Brexit
Dublin Port is halving the time it will allow shipping containers to be held for free and doubling charges for subsequent storage in order to increase space for Brexit.
The State s busiest port, accounting for the vast majority of freight coming in and out of the country, is to decrease the "dwell time" for container storage and increasing the daily charges to free up capacity.

NIMASA, PFSO debunk recent report on port security
Contrary to media reports on the poor maritime security arrangement in the Nigerian port industry, by the United States Coast Guard, the Port Facility Security Officers, PFSO Forum, and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has faulted the report.
Speaking on the development, Chairman of the Port Facility Security Officer,PFSO, Forum, Dr. Ignatius Uche told Vanguard Maritime Report that the Global Integrated Shipping Information System, GISIS is domiciled in the IMO and not the office of the U.S Coast Guard adding that it is from the platform global report on port security is received.

The Piraeus miracle and the way forward
A few weeks ago, one of the world’s largest container ships with a capacity of 20,000 TEUs, COSCO Shipping Pisces, approached Piraeus.
