Fire-Stricken Yantian Express to Leave Freeport by Early May
The fire-stricken containership Yantian Express should depart Freeport at the end of April/early May 2019, according to German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd.
The 7,506 TEU vessel, that will set sail with the remaining cargo onboard, was scheduled to reload the containers unloaded at Freeport on April 12, 2019. The company added that General Average and Salvage security has still not been posted for some of these containers.
Additionally, the company said that the departure will depend on salvage company Smit and the provision of salvage security.
Smit has declared that the granted period of 21 days for the provision of salvage security has long expired. Hapag-Lloyd explained that the salvage firm was therefore working on getting the required certification from the Lloyd s Arbitration to enable them to sell the cargo to satisfy their security interest, should security not be provided imminently.
In light of dependency on technical approval of vessel class, the next port of call is not finally determined as yet, the German shipping major concluded.
As World Maritime News earlier reported, Yantian Express suffered a fire while sailing in the North Atlantic, some 650 nautical miles off the Canadian coast, on January 4. The ship s crew evacuated two days later, after the fire increased in intensity.
In February, the boxship berthed in Freeport, Bahamas, to undergo the evaluation process and prepare for cargo discharge. Around 200 containers have been identified as a total loss.

Liner Giants Form Digital Container Shipping Association
Four container shipping giants, Maersk, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd and Ocean Network Express, have established the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) on April 10, 2019 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The parties said that the aim of the association is to make common information technology standards to make the industry more efficient for both customers and shipping lines.
The plan to design a neutral, non-profit association for ocean carriers was first announced in November 2018. The association, focusing on driving standardization, digitalization and interoperability in container shipping, is now starting operations with a leadership team made up of industry veterans, including Thomas Bagge from A.P. Moller - Maersk, who was appointed CEO and Statutory Director of the DCSA.
"For the first time in twenty years, the container shipping industry has come together with a common goal to move the industry into the digital era. With the regulatory approval in place, we look forward for the association to take up work and to begin to collaborate with multiple stakeholders from the entire value chain," Andre Simha, Chief Information Officer of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of DCSA, said.
To make value quickly and to overcome some of the biggest pain-points in the industry, one of the first projects of the association is focusing on standards to overcome the lack of a common foundation for technical interfaces and data.
Additionally, the association is creating an industry blueprint for processes, which will be another significant part of the future of shipping. The work undertaken will be for the benefit of the entire industry, as all standards will be openly published and available free of charge to interested external parties, the companies informed.
DCSA is in discussions with multiple other container shipping lines around the globe who are interested in joining. Preparations for two more companies to join are already in process.

Austal Cuts Steel for Second Fred Olsen Trimaran Ferry
Australian shipbuilder Austal held a steel-cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction on the second 118-meter trimaran ferries for Spanish shipping firm Fred. Olsen Express.
The ceremony for the future Banaderos Express was held at Austal s Philippines shipyard. The ferry is due to be delivered by the end of 2020 as part of an AUD 190 million (USD 135.7 million) shipbuilding contract with Fred. Olsen Express for two trimarans, which was awarded to Austal in October 2017.
The Bañaderos Express, and its sister ship, the Bajamar Express, were developed at Austal’s maritime design center in Henderson, Western Australia.
"The Austal-designed and built 127-metre trimaran, the Benchijigua Express, has become the benchmark for blue-water commercial ferry operations since it entered service in 2005, exceeding expectations for performance, speed and customer experience in the Canary Islands," David Singleton, Austal CEO, said.
"These new 118-metre trimaran vessels will continue to be a game-changer in the international high-speed ferry market when these vessels enter service for Fred. Olsen."

Brisbane Breaks Ground on New Cruise Ship Terminal
Brisbane has launched the construction of the new International Cruise Terminal, heralding the start of a new era for Queensland’s economy.
The AUD 158 million (USD 112.9 milion) project, which would be capable of welcoming bigger ships, is scheduled to open in October next year. It has the potential to more than double Brisbane’s cruise industry, according to
"Building this one piece of infrastructure flows through our entire economy," the Premier said.
"Ships that were too long, too high and too deep to dock at Brisbane’s Hamilton facility will have a dedicated cruise terminal," Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland, said.
"That will stimulate the industry at ports up and down the Queensland coast, as we aim to increase passenger numbers throughout the state to more than a million a year."
Tourism Industry Development Minister, Kate Jones, said the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal would provide a welcome boost to the state’s tourism sector.
"Last financial year we saw 520 ships port in Queensland, 11 per cent growth year-on-year, making the Sunshine State Australia s undisputed cruise capital," Jones said.
Within its first five years the terminal is expected to handle over 1,100 vessel calls and around 1.8 million passengers. Over 180 bookings have already been confirmed for the 2020/21 cruising season.
In February 2019, Port of Brisbane announced the principal contractors for the cruise terminal.
Wharf construction will be undertaken by Brady Marine & Civil, a specialist marine infrastructure and engineering contractor headquartered in Brisbane, while civil works and terminal building will be delivered by Hindmarsh, an Australian construction company.
