Disabled ro-ro ship brought to anchor in English Channel
Ro-ro cargo ship FINLANDIA SEAWAYS suffered, reportedly, mechanical failure in the evening Apr 16 in English Channel, while en route from Zeebrugge Belgium to Rosyth UK. She was brought to anchor off Lowestoft, UK, and as of 0820 UTC Apr 17, remained in the same position.

Pacific International Lines Delivered Profit in 2017
Singapore-based Pacific International Lines (PIL) returned to profitability in 2017 due to an increase in shipping revenue, container sales and initiatives which improved operational efficiency. The company reported a net profit of USD 119.5 million for the twelve-month period ended December 31, compared to a net loss of USD 251.4 million seen a year earlier.

MSC s Newbuildings Break 23,000 TEU Threshold
The giant containerships ordered by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) at Korean yards last year will feature 23,000 TEU, based on the details released by German engine builder MAN Diesel and Turbo. Under the deal announced in September 2017, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) will construct six of the vessels while Daewoo Shipping Marine Engineering (DSME) will construct the remaining five.

Ulstein Starts Assembling World s Largest Battery-Hybrid Ship
Ulstein Verft has laid the keel of the Color Hybrid, the world s largest battery-hybrid ship, set to enter into service in July next year. The ceremony, held on April 16 at Crist in Gdynia, Poland, marks the assembly of the 14 large blocks of the ship, owned by Color Line. Once completed, the hull will be towed to Ulsteinvik, Norway in October for final outfitting. The ship is scheduled for completion and delivery to Color Line in May 2019.

Port of Long Beach Delivers Record First Quarter
Marine terminals at the Port of Long Beach handled a total of 3.87 million TEUs during the first three months of 2018, marking its best-ever first quarter. For the three-month period ended March 31, the port’s volumes jumped by 19.1 percent compared to 3.25 million TEUs reported in the first quarter of 2017.
Loaded imports were up by 7.3 percent at 267,824 TEUs, while exports surged by 18.3% to 142,419 TEUs. The Port of Long Beach added that its empties increased by 21.9 percent, reaching 165,015 TEUs.

CMA CGM to Operate Lekki Port s Container Terminal
French container shipping giant CMA CGM and Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to operate Lekki Port s future container terminal.
CMA CGM, through its subsidiary CMA Terminals, will be responsible for marketing, operations and maintenance of the container terminal at Nigeria s Lekki Deep Sea Port, which will have 2 container berths once completed in 2020

3D printing for maritime maintenance and repair with DNV GL
This week NAMIC s 5th additive manufacturing summit will address the use of industrial 3D printing for the maritime and energy sectors. Joining the event is DNV GL, an accredited registrar and classification society headquartered near Oslo, Norway.
DNV GL provides services for 13,175 vessels and mobile offshore units (MOUs) giving the enterprise a global market share of 21%. In addition, technical consultancy services are provided to sectors including renewable energy and the oil & gas industry. DNV GL s technical standards inform the design and installation of 65% of the world s offshore pipelines.

NIMASA, World Maritime Varsity unite to develop maritime industry
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and World Maritime University (WMU), Malmo, Sweden on Monday in Lagos signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop human capacity for the industry. NIMASA Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Isichei Osamgbi said Dr Dakuku Peterside, director-general of NIMASA signed on behalf of his organisation, while the President WMU, Mr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry signed for the university. Peterside in his speech after the signing of the MoU, said that he led a delegation from Nigeria to Malmo for the purpose of maritime development.

Oil exploration ship catches fire off Miri, crew s fate unknown
An oil and gas exploration vessel, Ocean Geos, caught fire off the Baram waterway near here this morning. It was learnt that in the 3am incident, an explosion had occurred in the ship s engine room which led to the fire. At Press time, the fate of the ship s 38 crew members was still unknown. Petronas, in a media statement, said a rescue operation has been activated. Meanwhile, Miri Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said a media conference will be held at the MMEA office today.

Throughput at Iran s Biggest Commercial Port Sees 8% Growth
More than 87 million tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded in Shahid Rajaee Port in the southern Hormozgan Province during the last Iranian year (March 2017-18), registering an 8% increase compared to the year before, the director general of Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Organization announced.
Allah-Morad Afifipour added that during this period, non-oil exports from the port exceeded 39.39 million tons to register an 8% rise while imports reached 9.58 million tons-almost unchanged year-on-year.
