North Carolina Ports Welcomes Its Largest Boxship
North Carolina Ports made history on April 22 by welcoming its first-ever 12,000 TEU vessel to the Port of Wilmington.
The ship, Kota Pekarang, is so far the largest capacity-wise vessel to call the port. The containership is operated by Israel-based liner company ZIM in partnership with the 2M Alliance which links Asia to Wilmington.
"This is a monumental milestone for North Carolina Ports and the Port of Wilmington," Paul J. Cozza, Executive Director, North Carolina Ports, said.
"This is proof of concept that we are big ship ready and capable of handling some of the largest container vessels calling East Coast ports today,".
The ship s visit to Wilmington comes on the heels of the arrival of North Carolina Ports third neo-Panamax crane. The third crane arrived in early April as part of the organization s USD 200 million capital improvements plan aimed at expanding the Port of Wilmington s infrastructure to accommodate the 14,000 TEU vessels - the largest ships currently calling the United States East Coast.
NC Ports infrastructure improvements plan includes a wider turning basin, berth enhancements, new neo-Panamax cranes and an overhaul of Wilmington s container terminal. The terminal renovations will double the port s annual throughput capacity to 1.2 million TEUs and triple its refrigerated container capacity to 1,000 plugs.

COSCOCS Unveils Name of Sixth Valemax Unit
China COSCO Shipping Corporation (COSCOCS) held a naming ceremony for its sixth Valemax very large ore carrier (VLOC) in Yangzhou on April 18.
The 400,000 dwt Yuan Shen Hai is one of ten VLOCs Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) will deliver to COSCO under a contract 2016.
Measuring 362 meters in length and 65 meters in breadth, the Singapore-flagged Yuan Shen Hai will transport iron ore from Brazil to China under a 27-year agreement COSCOCS entered with Brazilian miner Vale.
The remaining four Valemaxes for COSCOCS are all scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2019.
The deal between COSCOCS and SWS is part of a bigger, 30-vessel order that Chinese owners Cosco Group, China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) and ICBC Financial Leasing Co have placed with four separate shipbuilders.
ICBC and CMES later agreed to join forces on the VLOC project with the aim of reducing operational risks.
The Valemax fleet is expected to give Chinese carriers control of about 30% of total iron-ore imports into the country in terms of volume.

Australian Gov t Cancels Funds for Newcastle Cruise Terminal
The Australian government has withdrawn funding for the new cruise terminal project at the Port of Newcastle.
"Infrastructure NSW has advised that the AUD 12.7 million funding for the cruise terminal project is no longer available," the Port of Newcastle said in a statement.
The funding for the new multipurpose cruise terminal in Newcastle Harbour was first announced back in 2016. The purpose of the facility was to enable a significant expansion of the cruise industry in the Hunter.
Since then, the Port of Newcastle has been working on this project on behalf of the government on the basis of providing a facility that meets the cruise industry s needs while remaining within the funding provided.
"While disappointed construction of the terminal facility cannot proceed at this time, we respect that funding is no longer available," the port added.
The funding was in addition to the AUD 800,000 provided for the upgrade of mooring bollards for the facility at the existing Channel Berth near Dyke Point.
"We re pleased that AUD 800,000 of upgrades to mooring bollards, jointly funded by the NSW Government and the Australian Government, have enabled larger ships of up to 3,900 passengers to berth in Newcastle," the port further said.

Mitsubishi Heavy Joins Charter of Trust for Cybersecurity
Tokyo-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries signed a cooperation agreement related to its participation in the Charter of Trust on Cybersecurity on April 23.
The deal, which follows the signing of the LOI in February 2019, makes MHI the first Asian member company as the 17th partner in the Global Cyber Security Initiative.
"Cybersecurity is an important field for MHI and its group companies," Eisaku Ito, CoCTO of MHI, said.
"Our participation in the Charter of Trust is part of our commitment to our global customers and partners, and we hope that this occasion will help to promote the 10 key principles advocated by the Charter of Trust, and that the Charter of Trust initiative will contribute to greater globalization," Ito added.
Initiated by Siemens, the Charter of Trust calls for binding rules and standards to build trust in cybersecurity and further advance digitalization.
Charter of Trust member companies have also worked out baseline requirements to make digital supply chains more secure. The partners recently announced to implement these requirements in their own supply chains.
