In collaboration with Maharashtra Maritime Board and Jawaharlal Nehru Port The Maharashtra government is all set to development of an all-weather port at Wadhwan with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore. The two maritime giants are having preliminary discussions to set the handling capacity up to 100 million tonnes per annum.

East African Nations should utilise shipping vessels available to ignore expenses amounting in billions
Billions of dollars have been spent by East African nations including countries of Central Africa to pay freight costs on internationally managed shipping companies, rather utilising their own resources of available shipping vessels.

As per the reports quoted by Intergovernmental Standing Committee on Shipping several countries like Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia had incurred freight cost of 48.2 billion dollar during the year 2008 and 2012.

Mr Kenneth Mwige - Secretary at Intergovernmental Standing Committee on Shipping commented, “It is the need of the hour that East African nations should take the advantage of spending money in vessels, whereas Ethopia does not own ships as compared to other EAC countries”.

Mr Kenneth Mwige added “If the situation persists of East African nations paying money to international companies, than ultimately the economies of these nations will be stagnant. Yearly, imports are rising by 7 percent as well as EAC countries economies are blooming.

As per the data shared by Kenya Ports Authority, the expected growth consisting the volume of cargo passing via Mombasa Port is 5 percent to 10 per cent this year. As compared to 24.875 million tonnes last year, this year it is 27.36 million tonnes of cargo passing.
