Latvian freighter double grounding, Denmark
General cargo ship RIX AMETHYST ran aground while leaving Rudkobing, Langeland island, Denmark, in the afternoon May 18. The ship with cargo of barley is bound for Bremen, Germany. Tug was called, the ship was refloated in reportedly, an hour and a half. While maneuvering after refloating, RIX AMETHYST stern entangled with fairway buoy, shifting it from its position. RIX AMETHYST grounded again, but this time she managed to refloat under own power, in about half of an hour.

Cargo ship contacted lock gate, both damaged, Kiel Canal
General cargo ship RIMINI contacted Locks gate while entering Kiel Canal in Brunsbuettel, in the evening May 17. Ship and gate were damaged, RIMINI was berthed after exiting lock in Brunsbuettel, Canal side. As of 0700 UTC May 19, the ship was still at Brunsbuettel. Gate reportedly, sustained serious damages and became inoperable. RIMINI is or was en route from Rotterdam to Rostock with ETA May 19.

1,200 cruise ship crew stuck in Vallarta awaiting permission to leave - Mexico News Daily
After more than two months at sea, Dr. Marco Antonio Espinosa Andaluz and 19 other Mexican crew members were finally able to disembark from the Holland America cruise ship Koningsdam in Puerto Vallarta on Sunday after he posted a Twitter message asking the government for permission to leave the ship.
However, more than 1,100 other crew members from eight different ships, representing some 70 nationalities, remain aboard the vessel.

Nigerian military rescues 18 crewmen following pirates attack on Chinese vessel - Global Times
Eighteen crew members aboard a Chinese vessel, MV HAILUFANG II, were rescued unhurt by the Nigerian military following a recent attack by pirates within the Gulf of Guinea.
The ship s crew including Chinese, Ghanaians, and Ivorians, was attacked by pirates off the coast of Cote d Ivoire on May 15, the Nigerian navy said in a statement made available to Xinhua on Tuesday.
The pirates then took control of the vessel and directed it toward Nigerian waters, the statement said.

Philippines: Abandoned tanker safe at port - The Manila Times
After five months of running dangerously low on fuel, having a faulty rudder and getting battered by Typhoon Ambo, the tanker MV Celanova was finally towed safely and docked in a port in Manila. Its 15-man crew was also given assistance.
The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) has requested Philippine maritime authorities to allow the ship into port to facilitate urgent assistance to the 15 Cuban crew aboard the Celanova, who have been left without pay for months and forced to beg for vital provisions.

Samoan seafarers plead for right to return home
Samoans trapped at sea due to coronavirus have pleaded with their government to allow them to return home. The 321 Samoan seafarers working on commercial and cruise ships around the world have been told by their government to be patient, since Samoa closed its borders in March to all travellers including returning citizens.

India : 441 seafarers from Italy to land in Goa today - Oherald
Following the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) clearance last week for opening Dabolim airport, 441 seafarers will land in Goa starting from Wednesday afternoon. MHA had also approved the repatriation of 7,000-plus Indian seafarers stranded abroad for the past two months.
Ports Secretary P S Reddy, who is the nodal officer for seafarers’ issue, informed Herald that the special chartered B-737 aircrafts will start landing from morning with a gap of two hours each.

India: Seafarers approach HC over quarantine rules - Oherald
A group of seafarers have approached the High Court of Bombay at Goa challenging the paid quarantine facility for the homecoming seafarers and additional quarantine period despite testing negative for COVID-19.
The petitioners, in the plea filed on Tuesday, raised objections on the two aspects while seeking the court s intervention for relief.
The seafarers, petitioners said, are returning to Goa after having spent a quarantine period on board their vessels. They are tested again and sent to institutional quarantine by the State government.

UK-flagged tanker repulses pirate attack in Gulf of Aden - ship manager
Armed pirates attacked a British-flagged chemical tanker in the Gulf of Aden on Sunday but were repulsed, the ship s manager Stolt Tankers said.
The pirates approached the Stolt Apal in two speedboats some 75 nautical miles off Yemen, it said, in one of the most important trade routes for oil heading from the Middle East to Europe."After multiple warning shots were fired by the armed guard team aboard Stolt Apal, the skiffs opened fire on the ship. The armed guard team returned fire, disabling one skiff and ending the pursuit," a company spokesman told Reuters in emailed comments.

To bolster the shipping sector and encourage private participation, the Union government plans to dismantle inefficient and burdensome monopolies, encourage innovation through start-up culture and innovate businesses to de-risk the projects and enhance Foreign Direct Investment in ports.
The vision includes building new ports to cater to the trade requirements, develop India as a Transshipment Hub and bring at least two ports in the world s top 10 rankings.

Ship Recycling Could Receive a Boost from Recent Developments in the UAE
With scrapyards in the South East Asia being effectively underutilized for the past couple of months, ship owners will be very happy to hear that activity could soon pick up and moreover, at higher prices, provided that the pandemic conditions allow for increased activity.
In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Clarkson Platou Hellas said that "as we touched upon last week, we are trying to accept any positives that emanates from the recycling destinations in view of the subdued previous month or two and whilst the following news will not give any immediate advantage, it will have a major impact for the long term.
