Moody s cuts DP World rating, sees growing link to Dubai s credit quality
Rating agency Moody’s downgraded the credit rating of Dubai port operator DP World by two notches to Baa3, the lowest investment grade because of rising debt.

Many investors view the ratings of government-related entities in Dubai, such as DP World, as an indicator of the government’s own credit profile. Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, is not rated by any of the major agencies.

Moody’s, which has already cut the rating of state utility Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), said there was a growing link between the credit rating of DP World and Dubai....

Seafarers report feeling trapped and exhausted - Lloyd s List
SEAFARERS are feeling trapped and tired due to prolonged services on board and uncertainty over repatriation, with paranoia creeping in under the threat of coronavirus infection on board.

Those are among the findings of the latest Seafarers Happiness Index, a metric that is based on seafarer surveys about their job, which drew on feedback from crew during the first quarter of 2020, with an emphasis on the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

Obstruction of crew changes — both from governments who are not allowing people to come onshore under national lockdown rules and from companies who have barred personnel changes to thwart the spread of the virus and to minimise disruption to their vessels — is one of the most pronounced challenges in the maritime sector today.

The survey is conducted by the Mission to Seafarers, in collaboration with the Shipowners’ Club and the Wallem Group.

Overall, seafarer happiness ranked lower in the first quarter of 2020 than it did in the last of 2019, falling from 6.39 to 6.30, the report shows....

WISTA Norway is credited with the idea of offering free memberships....

Drone Maritime Delivery Service Picks Up Another Logistics Industry Supporter - The Handy Shipping Guide
Having obtained the necessary permissions and completed preliminary trials late last year, F-Drones, a company aiming to complete the development of its HyperLaunch Heavy drone by next year, has received support from another major shipping and logistics group.

GAC’s local office is to partner with the start-up company to develop large-scale drones that can deliver up to 100 kilogrammes of supplies over 100 kilometres to vessels and offshore platforms. Testing is currently underway on F-drones’ 3rd prototype that is capable of handling items up to 5 kilogrammes over 50 kilometres.

GAC Singapore will be supporting F-drones in a test flight to deliver packages to vessels in the near future and the Dubai headquartered group joins other notable industry stakeholders and others such as Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), the Schulte Group, Techstars, Port XL, Entrepreneur First and tanker group Hafnia. Lars Bergström, GAC Group Vice President, Asia Pacific & Indian Subcontinent, said:

“Joining forces with F-drones is part of GAC’s drive to embrace technology to develop new ways to meet the demands of the maritime industry we serve. When fully commercialised, drones can be an attractive alternative to launches and helicopters for delivering supplies to vessels, especially for on-demand deliveries.”...

Seafarers: Governments Need to Step Up on Repatriation - The Maritime Executive
Daily we see the stories of how people and societies are coping with the pandemic including the effects of living in isolation, such as loneliness, mental illness, boredom, anxiety and depression. Yet there is another significant group of people who are out of sight yet on whom our societies depend and who are vulnerable to the same effects isolation, exacerbated by fatigue and separation from their homes. These people are the seafarers who keep maritime trade going so that the food, raw materials, energy and manufactured goods on which so many depend can continue. Ninety percent of global trade is transported by commercial shipping. In Australia, an island continent, it is 98.2 percent.

We rely on seafarers to deliver.

Seafarers already work in an environment of isolation and for months at a time. In the past they had the respite of shore leave in places they visited and the expectation of repatriation at the end of their service on ship. Not now. In very many cases they find themselves in a “no man’s land” confined to their ships and having to extend their service unable to get relief crews out or flights home....

Indian seafarers fear job loss as government dithers on crew change in foreign waters - BusinessLine
ndia risks incurring the wrath of the global shipping industry and losing out to rivals such as China, the Philippines and Ukraine on seafaring jobs as the government dithers on a strategy to evacuate thousands of crew stranded on board ships at overseas ports, some of them several days after their contracts have ended.

Some 30,000 Indian seafarers, 70 per cent of whom work on cruise liners, are stranded overseas, awaiting repatriation to India.

As the pandemic spread rapidly, cruise line operators halted services and these luxury ships are either idling at ports or are on the high seas....

Initial Sea Trials For Autonomous Tug Project - Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide
ST Engineering has successfully completed initial sea trials in Singapore waters for the first of its kind Smart Maritime Autonomous Vessel (SMAV) project in April 2020.

With artificial intelligence algorithms at work, getting a vessel to fully operate without a crew is now a dream come true for the next phase of transformation in the Maritime industry.

Similar to other autonomous applications, the ultimate objective of going autonomous is to enhance continuous safety and work efficiency. This is all the more so for the autonomous tug project, which requires the collision avoidance algorithm to work in accordance with COLREGS rules, particularly in the safe overtaking, head-on and crossing of vessels. The sea trials were conducted in various scenarios and varying speeds up to 8.5 knots while the vessel is in autonomous waypoint navigation mode....
