DNV GL: LNG Tank Capacity Could Start a New Era in Ship Fuel
The rapid growth in installed LNG tank capacity could mark the start of a new era in ship fuel, according to Martin Wold, head of the Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform at DNV GL - Maritime.
"There are now 163 LNG-fuelled ships in operation and a further 155 ships on order," Wold said.
Order intake for LNG-fuelled vessels has remained steady for several years now at around 40 ships per year. However, in 2019 the industry has already passed 40 new orders in the first five months, which could be a sign that the pace for LNG fuel investments is picking up.
Additionally, the AFI platform shows that installed LNG tank volume is set to more than triple from around 100,000 m3 today to the end of 2020. This represents large tanks in large vessels, propelled by the introduction of LNG fuel in the cruise, container and tanker segments, Wold informed.
"The 2020 sulphur cap seems to have accelerated LNG adoption, especially for larger ships, which could be good news for the industry, increasing fuel availability and improving asset utilization."
Furthermore, the number of vessels with scrubbers stood at 3,553, said Wold, but this could be higher as some manufacturers did not report orders on a regular basis.
"The boom of 2018 seems to have levelled off somewhat, but new orders keep coming in. There are more than 2,000 installations reported to be completed in 2019, which would mean by the start date of the sulphur cap almost 3,000 scrubber vessels will be in operation," he said.
"However, due to the complexity of scrubber retrofits, we expect that not all of these vessels will be on the water by 2020."

NCL Changing Itineraries across Three Brands amid Cuba Ban
The extremely abbreviated timeframe for compliance with the new travel restrictions to Cuba has aggravated the impact to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings earnings estimates, the Miami-based cruise major said.
The company explained that it is in the process of modifying all itineraries across its three brands that included calls to ports in Cuba.
"Our three brands are working diligently to accommodate the needs of our guests and travel partners as we quickly modify itineraries to meet the new Cuba travel regulations," said Frank Del Rio, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.
Although the sailings that included a Cuban port of call represented slightly more than 3% of the company s remaining sailings in 2019, the restrictions are expected to impact around 25% of the Capacity Days attributable to the combined sailings on the Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises brands, the majority of which were Cuba-intensive premium priced itineraries.
The modification of these itineraries, the substantial discounts offered, the accommodation of cancellations and changes to reservations, incremental marketing investment, along with the protection of travel agent commissions will result in an estimated impact to Adjusted EPS for full year 2019 of approximately USD 0.35 to USD 0.45, the company said.
The Trump Administration s move to ban cruise ships from docking in Cuba became effective June 5. The decision was revealed earlier in June and included the change in authorized travel to Cuba under the people-to-people program and prohibition of travel to Cuba via cruise ships.

ITF: Qaaswa Seafarers Return Home after 13 Months off Tunisia
Twelve seafarers on board the Qaaswa have been sent home after being marooned off the Port of Sfax, Tunisia, for 13 months, according to the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF).
The seafarers from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Myanmar flew home on May 31, 2019, each with thousands of dollars in unpaid wages, totalling USD$130,952 for the eight months that they were owed.
This is the third crew onboard the UAE-flagged tanker that has been repatriated after being abandoned at sea by Alco Shipping Services. The ITF has continued to intervene over the past three years to assist, repatriate and recover wages for seafarers stranded on the Qaaswa, and provided the crew with provisions and drinking water.
"Alco Shipping Services practices have no place in a modern maritime industry. No seafarer should have to go through the experience that the crews aboard the Qaaswa have endured," Mohamed Arrachedi, ITF inspector and Arab World contact network lead, said.

Steam Packet Ferry Company Signs Sea Services Deal with Gov t
The Isle of Man government and the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company (IoMSP), a passenger shipping company, have signed a new strategic sea services agreement.
As informed, the historic agreement has taken over six years to negotiate and sets the direction of the Steam Packet for the next 25 years.
The deal includes a wide range of requirements to ensure that the island has the sea services it needs for its long-term economic and social wellbeing.
In return for the almost exclusive use of the island s linkspans, IoMSP is required to invest in new vessels and provide regular services throughout the year. What is more, the shipping company has committed itself to a reduction in carbon emissions.
"The new sea services agreement is a logical and timely replacement of the existing user agreement. It creates a strong long-term foundation from which to deliver continued investment that meets the needs of the island s residents, businesses and visitors," Mark Woodward, Chief Executive of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, commented.
Woodward explained that the deal will allow the company to further implement its investment plans: "It will not only stabilise the future of sea services for the island and its people but deliver significant improvement in vessels and infrastructure in the years to come."
The government is the sole shareholder of the Steam Packet after Tynwald agreed to the government purchasing the company in May last year.
Under the deal worth GBP 124 million, the government bought 100% of MIOM Ltf, the parent company of IoMSP.
Founded in 1830, the company has two vessels that operate regular ferry services between the Isle of Man, Heysham and Liverpool and seasonal services between the Isle of Man, Belfast and Dublin.
