Barbados : CTUSAB fears for cruise ship workers stranded at sea.
The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) has formally expressed concern about the welfare of the thousands of cruise ship workers on vessels docked in Carlisle Bay and the Port of Bridgetown.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic triggered the closure of seaports around the world, including among Caribbean neighbours, a number of cruise ships has been berthed here while crew members await flights back to their home countries.
But last week, a 29-year-old Filipino crew member on board a vessel docked at the harbour was found dead of an apparent suicide.Posted On:20-Jun-2020

Grimaldi s ferry fire, Sardinia.
Fire erupted on cargo deck of ferry CRUISE BONARIA on her arrival at Olbia, Sardinia, from Livorno, in the evening Jun 18. Refrigerator truck is though to go on fire due to a shortcut. Thick black smoke billowed from cargo deck area to upper decks and high in the air. The ship continued her approach, firefighting and CG emergency teams boarded ferry and took part in firefighting, together with crew. Fire was extinguished, ferry with some 150 passengers was safely berthed at around 1830 UTC Jun 18. No injures reported. As of morning Jun 19, CRUISE BONARIA remained berthed at Olbia, no news on damages, probably none.Posted On:20-Jun-2020

Japan : Cargo fell on ship s deck, killing one docker and seriously injuring another.
Cargo lifted by ship s cargo gear fell down on cargo deck of general cargo ship TIMU, hitting two Japanese port workers, at around midday local time Jun 19 at Yokohama port, Japan. One docker died, another one was hospitalized with serious injures. The ship arrived from Kashima Japan, and understood to remain in port until completion of investigation.Posted On:20-Jun-2020

India : Maritime bodies join hands to transport 4,000 Indian seafarers till June 30 on non-commercial basis.
(PTI) Leading maritime bodies on Friday said they have joined hands to transport about 4,000 Indian seafarers till June 30 in chartered flights as a non-profit mission to enable crew change across the globe.
The step they said has been initiated to help Indian seafarers battling tough times amid COVID-19 pandemic.
The bodies coming together for this initiative include Maritime Association of Shipowners Shipmanagers and Agents (MASSA) and Foreign Owners Representatives and Ship Managers Association (FOSMA).
"By June-end, our chartered flights will fly at least 22 times between India and Qatar to enable Indian seafarers come back home and also board their onward connecting flights to join duties aboard cargo vessels at foreign ports," Capt Shiv Halbe, MASSA CEO told PTI.Posted On:20-Jun-2020

Goa: India s first maritime cluster gets 14,000 sqm plot at Verna.
India s first maritime cluster took another step forward with Goa Industrial Development Corporation allotting an industrial plot at Verna industrial estate to Konkan Maritime Cluster on Friday. The maritime cluster, a consortium of 49 Goan enterprises, will utilise the 14,380 sqm of land to setup a world-class common facility for manufacturing, design and allied services for the shipbuilding industry.
With the land allotted, the maritime cluster will now approach the Centre for a one-time grant to setup the common manufacturing and design facility at Verna. The Goa government is likely to contribute 10% of the setup cost, said sources.Posted On:20-Jun-2020
