Philippines: Repatriation rights of seafarers
Seafarers may exercise the right to stop working and leave ships in order to return home is the recent strong message of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) in relation to the seafarers repatriation issues affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"You have done your job, performed your duties, and accepted that you were unable to return home in the beginning in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 - but no more. Enough is enough. No more contract extensions," the ITF said in a statement. "You have selflessly extended and extended your contracts to do your part to keep critical supplies flowing around the world during this pandemic."

Samoan seafarers looking to NZ govt for help.
Four hundred Samoan seafarers are stranded on several cruise ships in the Caribbean and are seeking assistance from the New Zealand government to help them return home.
The seafarers are currently employed on 17 different cruise liners excluding container ships, which were all forced to stop operation due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The ships are believed to be anchored off between the Miami coast and the Bahamas.
Many of the other seafarers who come from countries such as India or Indonesia have been repatriated back home.
However, last month Samoa's Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi urged the seafarers to be patient, "learn to keep themselves busy and await the opening of international borders."

ITF Repeats Calls for Crew Change With More Conciliatory Tone.
The International Transport Workers Federation is continuing its campaign to call attention to the plight of seafarers forced to continue to work during the coronavirus crisis. The ITF, however, has also had to clarify some of its statements after drawing criticism from other organizations and detracting from its messages about crew welfare.
After strongly denouncing the ITF s call to action, the London-based charity Human Rights at Sea announced that it would retract its criticism and apologized for the language and tone of its criticism. "Human Rights supports any action that is a genuine attempt to help seafarers wherever they are," they said in their follow up statement, while they also pointed out that the issue is broader than just seafarers.
