Tug sank in Singapore Strait.
Tug MULTI SAHABAT 8 sank in Singapore Strait in the afternoon Jun 25, reportedly being unable to keep against high swell. Of 5 crew on board, 4 were rescued, and 1, skipper, went missing. SAR was suspended on Jun 26, skipper wasn t found.

Cargo ship engine room fire, Spain.
Fire erupted in engine room of a cargo ship berthed at Port of Sagunto, Spain, north of Valencia, on Jun 25. Reportedly, general cargo ship CORNION is the ship which suffered fire. Fire was extinguished by engine teams, no injures reported. The ship sustained damages, extent of damages wasn t revealed. CORNION is docked at Sagunto since Jun 11.

The UK and UN to support seafarers and stabilise shipping sector.
The Government of the UK has announced plans to host the first international summit regarding the Covid-19 impact on seafarers and crew changes.
Guests will include the United Nations (UN), as well as political and business leaders from around the world.
UK Maritime Minister Kelly Tolhurst will lead the virtual summit. The summit is expected to help reflect on the pandemic impact on the global shipping industry and the steps needed to ensure crew workers welfare.
The UN secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization Kitack Lim has highlighted the need to protect the workers and the duty of the governments to quickly repatriate the crew members.Posted On:27-Jun-2020

BIMCO launches Covid-19 crew change clause.
International shipping association BIMCO has launched a special Covid-19 crew change clause for time charter parties. The new clause is designed to give owners the liberty to deviate for crew changes under tightly defined circumstances. It also provides an option for charterers to contribute to the crew change in recognition of the potentially high cost of making a Covid-19 related crew change.
"Although the cost of crew changes is usually for owners account under a charter party, the extraordinary and unusual circumstances created by Covid-19 have left some owners unable to conduct crew changes on the ship s trade route. With crew now onboard for periods extending beyond their contracts of employment, owners need to have the flexibility to deviate to an alternative place if crew changes can t be done at the places where the ship is ordered by charterers.Posted On:27-Jun-2020

Nigeria : We re Improving Training, Certification of Seafarers, Says Jamoh.
Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh, has assured of policies to improve the quality of training and certification and remuneration for the country s seafarers.
Jamoh stated this in Lagos during a webinar hosted by NIMASA to mark the Day of the Seafarer.
The Director-General stated, "Policies are in the pipeline to improve the quality of training and certificates we give to the seafarers. We are taking steps to standardise the curriculum of our training institutions in line with international standards".Posted On:27-Jun-2020

Sri Lanka Port Authority ensures the safety of seafarers
Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) and all its stakeholders worked together around the clock to address the challenges faced by seafarers due to Covid19 pandemic and ensured their safety providing them with adequate facilities, the Chairman of the SLPA General Daya Ratnayake said.
Issuing a message to mark the Day of the Seafarer on June 25, the SLPA Chairman said the seafarers are the frontline of the maritime industry and the forerunners to maintain the efficiency and reliability of the global supply chain.
