A wind of change for the North Sea
It's been tough times for the North Sea, but Walter Thain, Managing Director of Petrofac Engineering and Production Services' Western region, is optimistic about the future of the UKCS: "We're in a world of change. You either treat it as doom and gloom, or you see it as an opportunity".

In March 2016, Petrofac was awarded a Service Operator contract to support Anasuria Operating Company Limited (AOC) - a UK joint venture formed between Hibiscus and Ping - on the Anasuria cluster.

The five-year contract, worth US$250 million, is a progressive development amidst challenging times for the UKCS and is undoubtedly a win for two companies with a lot of vision.

While low oil prices continue to pose a challenge, Walter believes they're also attracting investment by smaller companies ready to take advantage of the bigger oil giants selling assets. "Right now, there are new entrants looking at assets. And some are thinking that the oil price isn't going to stay low forever, so they'll take a risk. But it's about taking that risk and managing that risk appropriately. The opportunity for us, in this environment, is to change."

This is where the recent evolution of Petrofac's Duty Holder (Installation Operator) service model has come into play. Petrofac has evolved its approach to incorporate the well, pipeline and installation operator responsibilities within one model called Service Operator.

This evolution has been designed to provide a more integrated approach, to eliminate waste and maximise value. In short it's a model that responds to the times and keeps costs to a minimum and allows new entrants to completely focus on where they can bring value. "It's about thinking and doing things differently. That's what we've done with the introduction of the Service Operator model," says Walter.

Petrofac has undertaken responsibility on behalf of AOC for the FPSO operations, as well as for monitoring and managing the pipelines and wells. For AOC, it provides a resource for them to engage with the development potential of Anasuria, as well as building a North Sea presence.

The contract required a more flexible commercial approach and willingness from all parties to get to the table and negotiate positively. "These sorts of collaborative relationships are the way to go," believes Walter. "They allow smaller companies to stay lean and focused on what their task is. They can then outsource to a company who can join it all up, be incentivised and truly make a difference."

As part of a one-team approach, everyone worked to make the transition of ownership as seamless as possible, particularly for the people working offshore on Anasuria - a 20-year-old asset with a lot of history. AOC acquired the Anasuria cluster from Shell and its partners last year. Sixty eight people were transferred to Petrofac, and everything from work contracts and pensions to shoe sizes and coveralls had to be assessed.

Many of the offshore workers had been with Shell or other companies for 30 years, and on Anasuria for two decades. Beyond the uncertainty of whether the asset would be sold or decommissioned, there was a genuine desire to know that in difficult times, any new owner had the future of the asset at heart.

Offshore Installation Manager Brian Sutherland has been with the Anasuria since its construction in Newcastle 20 years ago. He believes AOC and Petrofac's open approach has helped steady the ship for what’s to come. "There's a sense that where decommissioning and the subsequent job losses may have prevailed, there is hope, change, and a genuine appetite for innovation in the future. The Anasuria's got great potential and I believe AOC can see that. It’s refreshing seeing a company willing to come in, spend some money and expand the life of the installation," he says.

For Ning Zhang, Managing Director of Ping Petroleum and Transition Director of AOC, the acquisition of Anasuria reflects an industry ripe for evolution. And with an estimated 25 billion barrels of oil equivalent still to produce in the UKCS, it's clear he's focused on the long game. "We have a plan, and that is to create the maximum value for the asset. What we're doing is rejuvenating mature assets and looking to bring a new generation of thinking and operating into the North Sea."

Together with Petrofac, Ning believes AOC can extend the life of the Anasuria and use the might of their enterprise to maximum effect. "We're small and nimble. The marriage with Petrofac allows us to conquer the bigger tasks. We’re not here to do an easy job, but we want to challenge ourselves."

It's clear that all parties are feeling optimistic about this new venture. Walter believes the changes to their service model and the detail of their AOC relationship is just the beginning - for Anasuria, Petrofac and the oil industry as a whole. "For us, it's about evolving ideas, adding value to those we work with and moving forward. It's good for us as a service company, and ultimately great, we hope, for maximising the recovery of the industry in the UKCS too."

First Foreign Tanker Set to Load Alaska Oil in Three Decades
A cargo of Alaska North Slope crude is scheduled to load next week aboard a foreign-flagged tanker for the first time in more than 30 years.

The Bahamas-flagged Tianlong Spirit, currently off the coast of California, is set to load a 136,000-ton cargo around July 25 from Alaska and then head for the Far East, according to ship tracking and fixture data compiled by Bloomberg shows.

"This would be the first time since the mid-1980s that a foreign-flagged ship would have loaded ANS crude for shipment," David St. Amand, president of Navigistics Consulting in Boxborough, Massachusetts, said by phone.

When Congress scrapped laws restricting most American crude exports, the end of a ban on foreign-flagged tankers shipping crude from Alaska came as part of the package. That opened markets in Asia and Europe to U.S. oil, offering Alaskan producers another destination besides the West Coast.

"BP chartered a foreign flag vessel for the transport of ANS crude for commercial and operational reasons," BP Plc spokeswoman Dawn Patience said in an e-mail. "BP will receive all the needed approvals from the State of Alaska and USCG before sailing."

Since the 40-year ban was lifted late last year, there has been one ANS crude export. BP delivered a roughly 1-million barrel cargo of ANS crude to JX Nippon into Japan in June using a U.S.-flagged tanker.

SENER's latest version of FORAN V80R2.0 lets users manage series of ships
The engineering and technology group SENER has announced that it is launching a new update of its FORAN shipbuilding CAD/CAM/CAE system, continuing with its strategy of satisfying user needs while also improving the software’s productivity in all of its disciplines.

Version V80R1.0, which was launched onto the market when FORAN celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015, was a revolutionary change. A year later, version V80R2.0 has added significant features such as a new geometric core and the ability to manage a series of ships (Applicability), in addition to other improvements in all of its disciplines.

Developing the concept of managing a series of ships has been demanded by the market for some time, especially in the military field. In FORAN, ships in the same series have shared characteristics, and modifications can be made to a single ship, to several ships or to the entire series. Meanwhile, a ship can also be taken out of a series and handled as an independent ship.

With respect to the change in the geometric core, FORAN now uses Open CASCADE (OCCT) technology, which makes it possible to represent analytical surfaces, making it significantly easier to define corrugated bulkheads, a notable improvement in the design and production processes.

In the surface definition module (FSURF), new types of entities can now be defined for creating surfaces and hulls. These entities are grouped into basic entities (spheres, cones, cylinders, etc.) and analytical entities (extruding entities, revolving entities, etc.). When combined with the analytical features of the FHULL hull structure module, these new functionalities in FSURF mean that FORAN can now be used for defining full offshore structures.

The structure standard management module (FNORM) now includes a new corrugated bulkhead standard. A new work method has also been added to the FHULL structure module for defining analytical surfaces. This is in addition to the existing functionalities for defining internal structures and the structures of shell and decks, which allow users to generate cylinders, cones, extruding or curved surfaces, and corrugated dividers based on a previously defined pattern. The geometry of the plates that are developed is calculated when the information is saved, while profiles can be created following the surfaces' curvature.

On top of this, the automatic nesting module in FORAN now has a new multi-pass method for generating parametric bevels. The new version also allows for standardized bevels or margins to be added to the auxiliary structure. In the FBUILDS build strategy module, the calculation of welding contacts has now been optimized.

Two new entities have been added to the machinery & outfitting and electrical modules, together with the zone and service concept: service line and service-line routing, which deal with the line segment in a specific zone, with both of them applied to pipe lines, ventilation ducts and cable trays. These new concepts will make design tasks easier by making it possible to block a single distributor (an entire service or a routing zone) instead of an entire zone. This will also provide additional advantages: on one hand making it possible to make modifications to a series of ships at a more basic level, while on the other hand optimizing management in PLM (Product Lifecycle Management tools) with a new concept called a "line operator". All of these improvements can be applied in the machinery & outfitting and electrical definition modules, in both 2D and 3D diagrams.

In the electrical solution, the FBCABLE module improves how cable end accessories are managed, especially multipolar connectors, and it also optimizes the watertight penetrations for a single cable passing through a bulkhead or a terminal box. Being able to access the connector catalog will now provide a simpler way to conduct searches, with the ability to filter by connector type, style and number of contacts.

Lastly, the integration of FORAN with PLM tools should also be noted, which even though it was already extremely advanced, is nevertheless improved in each new version of FORAN. In this version, of particular note is the ability to manage line entities, as noted above, together with the possibility of alternatively viewing material lists, and a new utility for configuring data-modeling maps with the goal of optimizing configuration tasks. This functionality now includes multiple selection, a directory and file selector, and the ability to drag and drop. Several improvements have also been made to the JT file-generation mechanisms, both in the export field and for publishing scenarios in PLM. The new features give users greater control over which information is imported or exported. All of this, when combined with the synchronization of the maturity information of the FORAN model from PLM (which provides a highly intuitive way to view maturity statuses in different colors) makes integration extremely useful.

SENER is known for its continuous reinvention, always providing its clients with solutions to their needs. This new version of FORAN is one result of this constant commitment, providing a highly effective solution to the problems and difficulties that arise in all of the design and production phases for ships and offshore structures.
