Making Sure Seafarers Know their Rights
Seafarers’ Rights International (SRI) and the ITF are marking the Day of the Seafarer by launching a series of short films to help seafarers understand their rights under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC). Produced by SRI, the animated films were commissioned by the ITF and funded by the ITF Seafarers’ Trust. They are part of an initiative to help seafarers understand their rights under the MLC. The first three films are an overview of the MLC, Seafarer’s employment agreement and guidance on how to complain. Rolls-Royce Spearheads Study into Autonomous Ships
Rolls-Royce is to lead the new EUR 6.6 million Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative to produce the specification and preliminary designs for the next generation of advanced ship solutions, which could pave the way for autonomous ships. The project is funded by Tekes (Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation) and will bring together universities, ship designers, equipment manufacturers, and classification societies to explore the economic, social, legal, regulatory and technological factors which need to be addressed to make autonomous ships a reality.
The project will run until the end of 2017 and will pave the way for solutions – designed to validate the project’s research. The project will combine the expertise of some of Finland’s academic researchers from Tampere University of Technology; VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd; Åbo Akademi University; Aalto University; the University of Turku; and members of the maritime cluster including Rolls-Royce, NAPA, Deltamarin, DNV GL and Inmarsat.Posted On:3-Jul-2015

Port of Gothenburg offers natural gas bunkering
A growing number of ships worldwide run on liquefied natural gas, LNG. Now they can bunker this cleaner fuel alternative at the Port of Gothenburg. New regulations for LNG bunkering have been introduced by the Gothenburg Port Authority in collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam.New bunkering regulations for ships operating on LNG have been drafted by the Gothenburg Port Authority and the Port of Rotterdam together with the Swedish Transport Agency. The regulations will allow cargo ships to bunker LNG at a cargo terminal and are the first general regulations to be introduced in Sweden.

Abu Dhabi Ports employees lend a helping hand and give back to the community
Abu Dhabi Ports, the master developer, operator and manager of ports and industrial zones in Abu Dhabi, is holding a three-day campaign to collect donations for those less fortunate across the world. The ‘Together, Lending a Helping Hand’ campaign saw employees raise over 1500 Kg of goods in the second day of the campaign, ranging from clothing and toys to school supplies and other items, to be distributed during Ramadan and Eid.
Taking place from 30 June to 2 July, the campaign is being held in partnership with the UAE Red Crescent as part of its Hefz Al Nema, or “Saving Grace”, charity project. The campaign, which will see all donations distributed to those in need, looks to both remind people of the importance of helping others and restore hope to those underprivileged.Posted On:3-Jul-2015

25 ports to receive national recognition
The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), the recognized and unified voice of U.S. seaports, recently announced that 25 seaports will be recognized for their excellent communications programs and projects at its yearly awards and convention luncheon.
The winning ports will receive their awards at the APPA’s 48th annual Communications Awards Program on Nov. 4. This event is organized alongside AAPA’s 104th Annual Convention and Expo based in Miami from Nov. 2-4.
The award judges were 46 professional public relations practitioners based in Washington, D.C. Before the May 1 deadline, the judges spent approximately 180 hours to judge the entries that covered 15 classifications in periodicals, advertisements, websites, videos and other media.
“When port authorities communicate strategically with their many audiences, including their communities, business leaders and policymakers, they’re better able to show their tremendous value as drivers of economic development, environmental enhancement and job creation,” AAPA’s President and CEO Kurt Nagle said. “This competition helps our member ports by rewarding effective communications and highlighting best practices and lessons learned.”

Top Seaport Honors Go to Long Beach
The Port of Long Beach was named the best seaport in North America at the recent Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain Awards in Hong Kong, hosted by the shipping trade publication Asia Cargo News.
The award recognizes the best ports as judged by importers, exporters, and logistics and supply chain professionals. In the past, the program was organized by another publication, CargoNews Asia. If viewed as a continuation of those awards, this is the Port of Long Beach’s 17th time in the last 20 years winning the Best North American Seaport honors. Last year, Long Beach won the award for being the world’s Best Green Seaport, based on its environmental record.
“We’re working harder than ever to provide the service to our customers that will keep them coming back to Long Beach,” said Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners President Doug Drummond. “It’s great to see the results of efforts, and I’d like to thank Asia Cargo News for this award.”
The more than 15,000 industry professionals who read Asia Cargo News participated in the nomination and selection of winners. The awards were presented recently at an event in Hong Kong.
