India : Hope rekindles for sailors as shipping firms start hiring.
For the more than 8,000 seafarers who have returned home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, hope for overseas employment has begun to surface with global shipping companies commencing recruitment. Over the past 20 days, a number of shipping firms based in Mumbai have begun the signing on - and signing off - process by chartering international flights from different countries.
That the sector is picking up is evident as around half a dozen medical clinics in Goa that conduct tests on seafarers before they board vessels of their respective shipping companies are buzzing with activity.

Over 1,000 Filipino workers, seafarers from Singapore return to Philippines.
Over 1,000 overseas Filipinos and stranded seafarers were recently brought home from Singapore as the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) continues with its repatriation efforts amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Another 325 Filipinos from Singapore arrived in Manila on Monday, the Philippine Embassy in Singapore said in a statement on Wednesday.
This was the eighth repatriation flight organized by the embassy, bringing the total number of Filipinos assisted by the embassy since April to 1,739.Posted On:30-Jul-2020

Car carrier damaged Lock s gate in Bremerhaven
Car carrier contacted rubber panels or fender of Bremerhaven Lock gate, seriously damaging gate and sustained hull dent. Understood accident took place on Jul 28, and car carrier in question is GARNET LEADER, but it s not confirmed yet. The ship maneuvered into Lock with 2 tugs assistance. Finally the Truth, Mein Schiff 1 - Five Crew Members Test Positive for COVID-19.
TUI Cruises, which operates the Mein Schiff fleet of cruise ships, announced that five crew members hired to work aboard the Mein Schiff 1 (photo below) tested positive for COVID-19. The German cruise blog called Kreuzfahrt-Aktuelles (cruise news) published the news. The majority of travel publications and cruise blogs are currently reporting with great fanfare on the cruise recently taken by another ship in the Mein Schiff fleet, the Mein Schiff 2, which recently returned from a three day cruise from Hamburg with 1,200 guests.Posted On:30-Jul-2020

Drastic measures needed for crew changes.
INTERCARGO has said that it cannot even begin to contemplate the impacts if terminal and cargo operations were halted and cargo vessels stopped operations and trading, as a result of crew remaining on board for 12 - 17 months. This compromises the safety of crew, ships and cargoes if worldwide progress is not made on crew change.
