Bulk carrier damaged, inoperable, Red sea
Bulk carrier ELISSEOS was damaged while entering Hodeidah Port, Yemen, reportedly on Jul 30, either when running aground or colliding with mole. According to Saudi coalition information, bulk carrier was troubled because of Houthi mismanagement of port work, including traffic control. Saudis said that bulk carrier is inoperable after accident.

Koch Hires Diana Shipping s Capesize
Athens-based dry bulk owner Diana Shipping has signed a time charter contract with Singapore s Koch Shipping for one of its Capesize dry bulk vessels. Under the deal, Diana s 179,362 dwt Capesize bulker Seattle would be hired at a gross charter rate of USD 24,000 per day. The charter contract, which commenced on July 30, was agreed for a period of four to six months.

Brightoil Discussing Sale of Zhoushan Oil Terminal, 15 Ships
Hong Kong-listed energy company Brightoil Petroleum is in talks with potential investors to sell part or entire stake in Zhoushan Oil Storage and Terminal and 15 shipping vessels. The fleet put up for sale includes very large crude carriers (VLCCs), Aframaxes and barges. The move is being pursued as a means of boosting the company s financial strength.

Watch 4,000th Neopanamax Transit through Panama Canal
The liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker Maria Energy has claimed the title of the 4,000th Neopanamax vessel to transit the expanded locks of the Panama Canal. The milestone was achieved on July 29 while the LNG tanker was traveling southbound from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.
"The steady increase in Neopanamax transits reflect our customers confidence in the expanded canal, particularly with our fastest-growing segment," said Panama Canal Administrator, Jorge L. Quijano.

Balearia Upgrading Five Ferries to Run on LNG
Spanish ferry operator Balearia is to invest EUR 60 million (USD 70.3 million) to retrofit five of its ferries to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) in an effort to cut pollution from ships. Namely, the ferries Napoles, Abel Matutes, Sicilia, Bahama Mama and Martin i Soler are scheduled to undergo the upgrades over the next two years.

Steel Cut for CMA CGM s 22,000 TEU Behemoths, World s Largest Boxships
China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) has launched construction of CMA CGM s 22,000 TEU boxships ordered in September 2017.
The steel cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday, July 26 at Jiangnan Shipbuilding in Shanghai, hosting representatives from the shipbuilder, CMA CGM and MOL, China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI) said. The ceremony marked the construction on two hulls that form part of the nine-strong series, the other ship being built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.

OOCL s Volumes, Revenues Continue Rising
Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) witnessed a continued rise in revenues in the second quarter of 2018, driven by an increase in volumes.
For the three-month period ended June 30, 2018, the company s total revenues increased by 4 percent to USD 1.46 billion from USD 1.4 billion. The rise was mainly driven by the Trans-Pacific trade, where revenues surged by 11.2 percent. The Asia/Europe trade s revenue was slight up by 1.3 percent, while the Trans-Atlantic and Intra-Asia/Australasia revenues were down by 0.2 and 1.4 percent, respectively.

Japanese Big Three Bleed Red amid ONE Launch
Japanese shipping majors K Line, NYK Line and MOL reported losses for the first quarter of 2018 fiscal year covering the period from April 1 to June 30.
K Line s net loss came at JPY 19.2 billion (USD 172 million) for the period spiraling down from the profit of JPY 8.5 billion in the same quarter in 2017. Operating revenues for the period stood at JPY 212.1 billion, also lower when compared to revenues for the three-month period in 2017, which stood at JPY 287.4 billion.

India: "New law to corporatise major ports"
Taking strong exception to the Major Port Authorities Bill being tabled in Parliament to replace the Major Ports Trust Act, Water Transport Federation of India (WTFI) general secretary T. Narendra Rao claimed that the move was aimed at converting the major ports into authorities as part of a hidden agenda to hand them over to private parties.

Tanker crew hit by dysentery outbreak
On Jul 30 Mexico Maritime Authorities made a statement on dysentery outbreak on board of Mexican tanker MARIANO ABASOLO, anchored on Campeche Anchorage, Gulf of Mexico. 17 crew had to be urgently treated, special medical team was delivered on board by Mexico Navy. Understood all crew remain on board, under medical observance, outbreak reported to be under control.

Contaminated Bunker Fuel Found in Singapore
Contaminated marine fuel that can cause considerable damage to ship engines is being sold in Singapore, Reuters reports citing information from marine fuel surveying company Maritec Pte.
Based on the data from a letter Maritec sent to its clients, six fuel samples of ship fuel sold in Singapore had "resulted in severe sludging at centrifuges, clogged pipelines, overwhelmed fuel filters."

Milaha s Profit Rises by 11 Pct in First Half of 2018
Qatar Navigation (Milaha) saw its net profit increase by 11 percent during the first half of 2018. The company delivered a net profit of QAR 297 million in the six-month period ended June 30, 2018, against a net profit of QAR 267 million reported in the same period in 2017.
Operating revenues for the first half were at QAR 1.25 billion, rising from QAR 1.15 billion seen a year earlier, while operating profit increased to QAR 258 million from QAR 170 million recorded in the six months ended June 30, 2017.

Container Shipping Survival of the Fittest
The container shipping companies are faced with the perfect storm with the ever tighter environmental regulations coming into force and oil prices jumping, exerting further pressure on liners to squeeze out profit from the buoyant demand.
Asset quality, size and diversification will determine the success of shipping companies in the next 18 months, German rating agency Scope Ratings said. "Only container shipping companies with the biggest fleets and most efficient vessels are likely to turn a profit this year and meet longer-term challenges," the agency explained.

New equipment for Sapangar, Tawau and Sandakan Ports
Four reachstackers and three empty container handlers (ECH) for container handling operations have arrived at the Sapangar Bay Container Port (SBCP), Tawau Port and Sandakan Port.
Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) said in a stab tement yesterday that these equipment, used for transporting and stacking of containers, are essential in yard side operations so as to enhance the operational efficiency at these ports.
