Italy quarantines Ocean Viking ship in Sicily.
Italian maritime authorities placed Tuesday the migrant rescue ship Ocean Viking in quarantine off the Sicilian port of Porto Empedocle, charity group SOS Mediterranee said.
Late Monday, 180 migrants on board the vessel were allowed off after nine days and taken to another boat where they will also be quarantined to prevent the possible spread of coronavirus. The operation capped a tense few days onboard the Ocean Viking marked by migrants jumping overboard, a suicide attempt and bouts of violence. The ship is now anchored outside the port, with an AFP correspondant on board, and the crew has been asked to respect a two-week quarantine, the charity said.Posted On:8-Jul-2020

Wests seafarers on the challenges and rewards of a career at sea.
Any seafarer will tell you that it's an incredibly demanding job at the best of times. The isolation of long periods at sea or at distant ports with little infrastructure hits home hard on #DayOfTheSeafarer. On this day in particular it is especially important that we show our appreciation for the women and men who have taken up this vocation.

ITF refutes call for mutiny onboard ships.
The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) has refuted allegations that it is calling for mutiny onboard ships when it suggested that seafarers should stop working as soon as their contracts are finished.
This came on the heel of criticisms that ITF recently drew from some seafarers and employers following an announcement, released by its president Paddy Crumlin, who stated, "If you have finished your contract, then you have the right to be repatriated. If this is not possible, then you would remain on board as a passenger. The consequences could be that the ship is unable to sail if the manning level is inadequate but that is not your responsibility."Posted On:8-Jul-2020

VLLC tanker crew in critical condition in need of insulin.
VLCC tanker NEW TRIUMPH on Jul 6 requested immediate medical assistance, one crew is in critical condition, in need of insulin injection. The ship interrupted her voyage and is steaming towards nearest port, probably Galle or Hambantota, Sri Lanka. Tanker is en route from Kuwait to Taiwan.Posted On:8-Jul-2020

Finally Some Ships Crews Go Home but Much More Still Needs to be Done by Governments.
It is hard to get too excited about the news that, finally, some ships crews are being changed, after months of many being stranded aboard their vessels with all the resultant hardships that has entailed. The release of the tenth WPSP-IAPH Covid-19 Port Economic Impact Barometer this week reveals 55% of ports of those surveyed reported no crew changes have taken place in week 27.
Despite calls from such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and a plethora of unions with maritime interests and vessel owners, many governments have proved lamentably slow in facilitating ways for the sailors to return home and fresh crews be taken onboard. In one third of the ports, a very limited number of crew changes have occurred (less than 5). Governments meet this week in London to address the growing crisis around crew changes at the same time as the International Labour Organization s (ILO) Global Summit.Posted On:8-Jul-2020
