Port of Rotterdam Taking Pronto Data Exchange Platform Global
The Port of Rotterdam has launched a new company through which it would offer Pronto, an application for standardized data exchange on port calls, to ports around the world.
The company that will be known as PortXchange Products BV was launched on August 8. It will allow Port of Rotterdam to join forces with global partners in the next few years and offer the application to interested parties.
Together with Shell and A.P. Moller - Maersk, PortXchange will initially offer Pronto to several ports outside the Netherlands.
"Pronto will be offered in several ports in Europe and the US before the end of the year", Allard Castelein, CEO Port of Rotterdam Authority, said.
"We are moving towards a global, end-to-end digitally connected operating environment for shipping, as in the airline industry. For example, at Shell, our onshore digital center is able to analyse 500 data points a second in real time from each ship we manage," Grahaeme Henderson, Vice President of Shell Shipping & Maritime, said.
"In partnering on Pronto, we can see opportunities to extend this work to optimizing port operations."
PortXchange will aim to improve the efficiency of port calls and help reduce emissions, both in the port as well as between ports, through just-in-time sailing.
"The aim of the Pronto platform, to enable just in time arrival and optimize the port stay of our vessels, enables us to achieve our end goal of reducing our CO2 emissions," Kent Stig Hagbarth, Head of Operations Execution at A.P. Moller-Maersk, added.

BESIX, Vanpile to Build LNG Terminal in Canada
The Canadian unit of Belgian group BESIX and its joint venture partner Vancouver Pile Driving have been selected to build an LNG export facility in British Columbia, Canada.
As informed, the contract was awarded to BESIX and Vanpile by the JGC-Fluor BC LNG Joint Venture (JFJV). This is the second project that BESIX will carry out in Canada.
Construction of the facility in Kitimat, in the North Coast region of BC, will begin in 2019.
Expected to be completed in 2021, works will include the construction of a 500-meter-long quay wall, an LNG platform, multiple dolphins and onshore infrastructure.
Once completed, the LNG terminal will be maintained by JFJV and operated by LNG Canada, a joint venture between Shell, PETRONAS, PetroChina, Mitsubishi and Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS).
In October 2018, the JV partners in LNG Canada took a final investment decision (FID) on this major LNG project whose development will cost about USD 14 billion. The facility will initially export LNG from two trains totaling 14 million tons per annum (mtpa), with the potential to expand to four trains in the future.
Via the Douglas Channel, one the principal fjords of British Columbia, the port in Kitimat is part of the Northwest Corridor, connecting North America to the Pacific Rim.

Russia Authorized to Survey Cyprus-Flagged Ships
Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) has signed a new agreement with the Maritime Administration of the Republic of Cyprus (the Cyprus MA).
The deal, that was signed in late June in Limassol, includes the extension of the scope of the RS authorisation by the Cyprus MA effective from August 1, 2019.
In particular, RS is now authorised to perform surveys of ships flying the flag of the Republic of Cyprus for compliance with the requirements of the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code), Code of Safety for Special Purpose Ships, Code of Safety for Diving Systems.
"The new agreement results from the high level of cooperation achieved by RS and the Cyprus Maritime Administration," Konstantin Palnikov, Director General of RS, said.
There are currently 23 RS-classed ships flying the flag of the Republic of Cyprus while two more ships are at the construction stage.
The Republic of Cyprus is one of the largest flag states as per number of the ships registered. RS was originally authorised by the Cyprus MA in 2005.
As of 2019, RS is recognised in total by 69 maritime administrations of flag states.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Chooses Jotun HPS for 42 Ships
Shipping firm Wallenius Wilhelmsen has decided to optimize hull performance of 42 of its vessels with Jotun s anti-fouling coating system.
On August 8, Norway-based provider of marine coatings Jotun said it has signed an agreement with Wallenius Wilhelmsen to provide its Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) system across the shipowner s RoRo fleet.
According to Jotun, HPS combines SeaQuantum X200 antifouling with technical and digital solutions to accurately measure hull performance. The antifouling works are increasing vessel efficiency, cutting fuel costs and reducing CO2 emissions.
By using HPS across its fleet, Wallenius Wilhelmsen aims to optimize its environmental performance and deliver enhanced stakeholder value.
"Working together we will be able to optimize hull performance and help Wallenius Wilhelmsen fully comply with global regulations and targets, while meeting its own stringent environmental objectives," Gunhild Tveitan, Jotun s Business Development Manager Scandinavia, commented.
Fouling is a key contributor to the spread of invasive species across marine ecosystems and a major cause of hull inefficiency, leading to increased fuel consumption and emissions. Studies have suggested that the fuel consumption of the world fleet could be reduced by up to 20% if all vessels were kept fouling free.
"We believe this kind of partnership can be an important platform for building an increasingly sustainable shipping industry, helping inform better decision making and creating new solutions for the future. We are excited to get started on that journey with Jotun," Geir Fagerheim, SVP Marine Operations, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, said.

ForSea to Convert Mercandia 4 to Freight-Only Ferry
Swedish ferry operator ForSea, formerly HH Ferries Group, has decided to convert Mercandia 4 from a passenger and freight vessel to a pure freight vessel.
Built in 1989, the 95-meter-long ferry can accommodate up to 110 cars and 383 passengers.
"This is a response to a long term decline in car and passenger traffic," the company explained.
"In addition, customer surveys have over time demonstrated a clear preference of passengers to use the larger and more modern ferries."
ForSea further said that the conversion of Mercandia 4 is an important step to secure the position of the company in the future. The ferry company also plans to introduce further initiatives in order to modernize the business and ensure its competitiveness.
ForSea has to date made investments to transform Aurora and Tycho Brahe to battery-powered operation. The two ships were inaugurated in November last year as the world s largest battery-powered passenger ferries on the route between Helsingborg, Sweden and Helsingor, Denmark.
The Helsingor-Helsingborg ferry service is the region s floating bridge and is operated with five ships - Aurora, Tycho Brahe, Hamlet, Mercandia IV and Mercandia VIII, all of which are environmentally friendly and equipped with catalytic converters.

Drewry: Modest Growth Expected for Global Container Port Demand
Global container port demand is heading toward a modest growth and numerous uncertainties, accompanied with muted capacity expansion plans.

Most world regions would therefore see an increase in average terminal utilisation, shipping consultancy Drewry said in its Global Container Terminal Operators report.
Drewry s container port demand forecast for the next five years is for global growth of 4.4% per annum on average, lifting world container port throughput from 784 million TEU in 2018 to 973 million TEU by 2023, an absolute increase of almost 190 million TEU.
The latest five-year forecast is a far cry from the heady days of the 2000s when forecasts were around 9% growth per annum until the global financial crisis of 2007-08 brought this to a shuddering halt.
Several locations are expected to outperform markedly the global average, most notably Middle East/South Asia and Southeast Asia/Far East.
Global container port capacity is projected to increase at a CAGR of around 2%, based on confirmed additions only. This is well below the projected demand growth and reflects the continued easing off from greenfield projects by investors over the last few years. As a consequence, average utilisation at the global level is forecast to increase significantly from 70% in 2018 to 79% by 2023, according to Drewry.
At the regional level, almost all locations are projected to see their average utilisation levels increase, the shipping consultancy noted, adding that the sharpest upward swings are expected in Greater China and Southeast Asia, with the former hitting 100% by 2023.
Among the top seven individual global/international terminal operators, based on their performance, PSA and Hutchison occupy first and second places respectively, with PSA s pre-eminence due to its 20% stake in Hutchison Ports.
Cosco moved up to third place in 2018 from fifth in 2017 by achieving over 30% growth, boosted by the OOCL acquisition. This meant that DP World and APMT each dropped one place to fourth and fifth place respectively. China Merchants with 35 million TEU and TiL with 26.5 million TEU remained in sixth and seventh places respectively despite both recording double-digit growth in equity-adjusted volume.
"A premier league of seven big operators has emerged, after which the next largest player is a third of the size. Between them they accounted for nearly 40% of global throughput in 2018. Within this elite group, Cosco has moved sharply up the table in this year s analysis," Neil Davidson, Drewry s senior analyst for ports and terminals, said.
