Safe Bulkers Pounces on Capesize amid Attractive Prices
Monaco-based dry bulk shipping company Safe Bulkers has availed of attractive prices to expand its fleet with a Japanese-built Capesize vessel. The 181,000 dwt bulker was built in 2009 and its purchase was financed from cash on hand, the company said. The identity of the seller and the name of the vessel have not been revealed.

Bilfinger Wins USD 45 Mn Worth of Scrubber Orders
The industrial services provider Bilfinger secured contracts from several Greek maritime shipping companies to fit out at least 42 vessels with scrubbers.
Under the agreements, with a total value of over EUR 40 million (USD 45.6 million), the company will provide flue-gas-desulphurisation systems that filter out sulphurous exhaust gases by means of a special absorption process to a number of shipowners, including Maran Tankers, Anangel Maritime, Delta Tankers, and Marmaras Navigation.

Danaos Slashes Debt by Over Half a Billion USD
Athens-based containership owner Danaos Corporation has cut its debt by over half a billion dollars, the company announced.
Namely, Danaos has consummated the debt refinancing for approximately USD 2.2 billion announced back in June, 2018, which was subject to definitive documentation. The refinancing deal allows the company to bolster its capital structure and reduce its outstanding debt by approximately USD 551 million.

HHLA s Container Throughput Keeps Rising
German terminal operator Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) recorded an increase of 1.2 percent in its container throughput in the first half of this year.
During the first six months of 2018, HHLA s container volumes rose to 3.63 million TEU from 3.59 million seen in the corresponding period a year earlier. Specifically, the slight growth was mainly driven by a 4.1 percent increase in Asia traffic, according to HHLA.

Diana Fixes Two Panamaxes with Hudson Shipping
Greek drybulk owner Diana Shipping has reached two charter agreements with Hudson Shipping Lines. Namely, the companies signed a charter extension for Diana Shipping s 73,630 dwt Panamax dry bulk vessel Protefs. Under the deal, the unit would continue working for Hudson Shipping for a period of about twelve to fifteen months, starting from September 19, 2018.

One more Grimaldi s ship in cocaine bust, again Santos, again 1.3 ton
A rather unusual and confusing incident took place in the morning Aug 12 off Santos Brazil, when GRIMALDI s ro-ro GRANDE FRANCIA was boarded by several armed man from a boat, which came alongside the ship, anchored on Santos outer Anchorage. The crew who spotted intruders alerted the bridge, Master activated security system and informed Santos authorities, requiring immediate assistance. Understood the crew blocked superstructure or hided inside most safe compartments, waiting for help. Navy patrol came too late to intercept the intruders because of foul weather, they managed to flee the ship.

Container ship MSC CHLOE lost 13 containers, 25 damaged
Container ship MSC CHLOE lost 13 40 containers some 22 nm ESE of Durban, South Africa in vicinity 30 03S 031 26E, at around 2330 LT (UTC +2) Aug 7, said South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) on Aug 13 in official statement. The ship was drifting off Durban, awaiting the berth, on arrival from Port Elizabeth, and was caught in huge swell, rolling some 30 degrees both sides. 13 containers went overboard, 25 containers on board were damaged. Navigational warning was issued on floating containers, threatening ships sailing in the area.

Near miss in Bosphorus Strait after bulk carrier went NUC Video
Bulk carrier HAZAR went NUC after reportedly, steering failure, in the morning Aug 13 in Bosphorus, while transiting Strait in southern direction, en route from Constanta Romania to Livorno Italy, right below Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. The ship narrowly escaped hitting one of the famous historical mansions on Strait s embankment, by dropping her anchors and probably, reversing engine to full astern. Shortly after full stop, the ship resumed moving under own power, made a loop and safely completed transit. She was brought to anchor at anchorage in Marmara sea. As of 1330 UTC, bulk carrier was still at anchor.

Rolls-Royce, ABP and Svitzer Partner Up on Next-Generation Port Technologies
Engineering company Rolls-Royce has teamed up with port operator Associated British Ports (ABP) and towage operator Svitzer to develop the next generation of port technologies. The three parties inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) during a workshop at ABP s Port of Southampton.
As explained, the agreement means that Rolls-Royce will work with ABP and Svitzer, part of the Maersk Group, to develop the innovative technologies and systems needed to operate efficiently and sustainably well into the 21st century.

COSCO Shipping International Bounces Back to Profit
Singapore-listed COSCO Shipping International saw its turnover from continuing operations jump by 271 pct in the second quarter of 2018. The logistics management company posted a turnover of SGD 40 million (USD 29 million) for Q2 2018, mainly driven by the turnover of SGD 32.3 million from newly acquired logistics businesses, the 100% acquisition of Cogent Holdings Limited and 40% acquisition of PT Ocean Global Shipping.

SAMSA: MSC Boxship Loses 13 Containers off Durban, South Africa
A containership operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has reportedly lost a number of containers while sailing between Port Elizabeth and Durban, South Africa.
As informed, a total of thirteen containers fell off the 9,411 TEU boxship MSC Chloe while the vessel was some 22 nautical miles off Durban in the evening hours of August 7. Additionally, another 25 CTUs have sustained damages.

Low MR Charter Rates Hurt Pyxis Tankers Earnings
Due to lower MR charter rates, Greek product tanker company Pyxis Tankers ended the second quarter of this year with a widened net loss. The company posted a net loss of USD 1.3 million in Q2 2018, compared to a net loss of USD 0.8 million seen in the corresponding period a year earlier.
Voyage revenues stood at USD 7 million for the three months ended June 30, 2018, representing a decrease of USD 1.4 million from USD 8.4 million reported in Q2 2017.

India contains cargo diversion to foreign ports for transshipment, says official
Government s relaxing of norms for transshipment has not only helped India arrest a sizeable chunk of its container cargo going to ports like Colombo, Singapore, and Jebel Ali but also forced a few foreign ports to cut rates, according to a top official.
India has been trying hard to arrest diversion of container cargo to transshipment hubs at foreign ports. In May, the Centre relaxed cabotage norms allowing foreign ships, chartered by Indian citizens or companies, to ply on local routes for transshipment purposes.

Commercial Priorities A Challenge For Port Safety
Putting commerciality over safety and total ownership ideals is a major challenge for the ports and terminals industry, according to Stephan Stiehler, vice chairman of the International Cargo Handling Coordination Association’s Technical Panel.
Speaking exclusively to Port Strategy at TOC Europe, Mr Stiehler claimed that all too often, terminal operators only invest in technology to meet minimum safety standards. "The cheapest safety technology is often not the one that will 100% minimise risk," he said.

Port of Hueneme, deepening project
On July 18, 2018, the Port of Hueneme welcomed two rails cars worth of new eco-friendly pilings for their new harbor deepening project set to begin late this summer. The new pilings come to the Port onboard its own rail, and entered on the South Spur at the Sunkist Lot.
As the pilings are impervious to marine creatures and salt water, they are not treated with chemicals as traditional pilings would be, and therefore do not harm any of the marine life in the harbor.

The fire in the Port of Antwerp may continue for several days
A smoldering fire erupted in a consignment of 5,000 tonnes of nickel oxide in a warehouse at the Port of Antwerp on August 11, causing the port authority to evacuate seagoing vessels in the vicinity.
The fire broke out on Saturday evening in a 6,000 m² warehouse on the Emdenweg, Leopold Dok, Antwerp s bulk terminal, the port authority said.

Ports of India, April-July cargo volume
The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 4.13% and together handled 231.48 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to July, 2018 as against 222.29 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year. During this period nine Major Ports - Kolkata (incl. Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal have registered positive growth in traffic.

ABP to develop new technologies with Rolls Royce and SVITZER
Associated British Ports, the UK s leading port operator, announces that it has invited Rolls Royce and Svitzer, part of the Maersk Group, to develop the next generation of technologies which will keep Britain trading.
A tri-party Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), was instigated by ABP s Director of Marine & Compliance, Mike McCartain and signed during a kick off workshop at ABP s Port of Southampton.
