Capesize bulk carrier WAKASHIO broke up, fore part under tow.
Regretfully, Capesize bulk carrier WAKASHIO, which ran aground on the reefs off Pointe Desny, southeast Mauritius, at around 1600 UTC Jul 25, broke in two, understood on Aug 15, notwithstanding salvage attempts. The bigger, fore, half of the ship is to be towed away or is already under tow, destination unknown. Aft part with superstructure, engine room and fuel tanks, remains on the reefs, posing none or minimal pollution threat, because all fuel was siphoned out during salvage operation.Posted On:17-Aug-2020

Behind the Beirut blast: ships, seafarers and cargo.
Hidden behind the tragedy of the recent deadly explosion in Beirut is the more pervasive travesty of the abandonment of ships, seafarers and cargo, and unless the global public reckons with this deeper problem, a next disaster is all but inevitable.
Though Lebanese investigators say that nearby fireworks likely ignited the 2,750 tonnes of explosive ammonium nitrate, the true causes of this explosion stem from slower-moving and less dramatic factors: anaemic enforcement by shady flag registries that are supposed to hold shipowners accountable, tightened immigration controls that routinely trap stranded crews on decrepit ships, lax rules and a maritime bureaucracy designed more to protect anonymity of ship owners than to enable oversight and transparency of the industry.Posted On:17-Aug-2020

Philippines : SBMA to accommodate repatriated seafarers.
The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) will facilitate the return of repatriated seafarers and accommodate crew changes at the Subic Bay Freeport.

Singapore reports 81 new COVID-19 infections, including 10 seafarers who arrived on vessel from India.
Singapore reported 81 new COVID-19 infections as of noon on Saturday (Aug 15), including 10 seafarers who arrived on a vessel from India earlier this month.
Singapore s total number of COVID-19 cases now stands at 55,661, with fatalities remaining at 27.

Philippines : Cruise operators rehire Filipino seafarers.
More than a thousand Filipino seafarers have been recalled by foreign cruise line operators that will resume sailing to Europe and Mediterranean itineraries, but thousands more still have to wait another two to three months due to travel restrictions in other countries.
Several cruise companies have already relaunched. These include TUI Cruises, a German company in which Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) holds a stake; Hurtigruten, a private company based in Norway; and Hong Kong-based Genting Cruise Lines, according to migration and recruitment consultant Manny Geslani.Posted On:17-Aug-2020

2 lighter ships sank in Bangladesh, 13 crew missing.
Two lighter ships sank in Bangladesh waters near Hatiya island in the morning Aug 15: MV AKHTER BANU-1 and MV CITY-14, both in load. MV CITY-14 was loaded with some 2,000 tons of raw sugar, all 12 crew rescued. MV AKHTER BANU-1 was loaded with some 2,000 tons of wheat, 13 crew are missing.
