The world's largest international maritime warfare exercise is massive
The Rim of the Pacific Exercise, better known as RIMPAC, is the largest regular naval exercise in the world. Every even-numbered year, countries from around the globe take part in this massive operation. 15 nations took part in RIMPAC 2018 (China was disinvited), bringing together a total of 48 ships off the coast of Hawaii.
But there's much more to RIMPAC than ships.
All sorts of units take part in this massive, international exercise. Off the coast of Southern California, participants carried out mine counter-measures exercises. Dolphins from the Navy Marine Mammal Program also pitched in to help with mine-clearing. Meanwhile, Camp Pendleton got in on the RIMPAC action as United States Marines trained with their Mexican and Canadian counterparts.
If that's not enough, the United States Army and Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force teamed up to put some hurt on a ship. Special Operations forces also got to do their thing during this exercise - hell, even the bands got involved!
Historically, there's been no limit as to what missions might be practiced. Ships get sunk during RIMPAC (arguably a highlight of the exercise), but units there also practice humanitarian missions, amphibious assaults, and even submarine rescues.
In 2018, the exercise was interrupted by a real search-and-rescue mission off the island of Hawaiian island of Niihau that involved Navy and Coast Guard units. In short, if it can happen in war, it can happen at RIMPAC!
This year, two aircraft carriers, USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and JS Ise (DDH 182), took part, as did the amphibious assault ship USS Bon Homme Richard (LHD 6), HMAS Adelaide (L01), and 44 other vessels, ranging from the hospital ship USNS Mercy (T AH 19) to the Peruvian maritime patrol boat BAP Ferre.

BIMCO ECSA Leadership Meeting In Athens
The BIMCO President, Mr Anastasios Papagiannopoulos and ECSA President, Mr Panos Laskarides met in Athens recently to discuss areas of cooperation and further alignment between the two leading associations representing shipowners globally and in Europe respectively.
"ECSA and BIMCO have supported each other in the past but there is a desire by both associations to further improve and deepen our cooperation", said Mr. Panos Laskaridis. "We discussed the key issues currently concerning the shipping industry such as environmental legislation, both at the European and international level, including CO2 emissions from shipping and the global limit for sulphur that will be effective from January 2020. We also discussed the worrying developments in world trade in addition to the very topical issue of migration and merchant ships involvement in rescuing operations," he concluded.
Mr. Anastasios Papagiannopoulos, said: "It is crucial that the shipping industry speaks with one voice at European and global level. That's why an even closer relationship between BIMCO and ECSA is in the interest of both organisations".
He added: "The strengths and capabilities of both organisations need to be combined in policy discussions that will steer the future of the shipping industry. When discussing the short, medium and long-term measures to reduce the GHG emissions from international shipping, industry has to be united".

Seafarers need to go through govt agencies for foreign travel
No sailor will be allowed to go abroad for jobs unless he applies through government recognised agencies, which will guarantee their welfare, Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari said today.
Gadkari said in Lok Sabha that the decision has been made after taking into consideration incidents of employment frauds where many Indian seafarers have became victims.
Altogether 478 agencies are recognised by the government and linked with the Bureau of Immigration. If seafarers (sailors) don't apply through these recognised agencies, they will not be allowed to go abroad for jobs, he said during the Question Hour.
The minister said at present there were 1.6 lakh Indian seafarers out of whom 1.2 lakh were working in foreign flags bearing ships. Among the total seafarers, around 4,000 are women.
"We are trying our best to provide all facilities so that Indians get jobs abroad, women get priority and no one is cheated. We will keep trying to do everything for the welfare of seafarers," he said.
Gadkari also favoured improvement of training facilities for seafarers in the country so that more and more Indians get jobs abroad. He, however, said the health of the Shipping industry has not been good and Rs 1.5 lakh crore funds of banks were stuck in it.
"I am worried and looking forward on how to improve it," he said.

35 Kidnapped in Gulf of Guinea in 2018
The Gulf of Guinea off the Niger Delta remain the most dangerous area in the world for merchant ships according to a report from EOS Risk, a world leading global professional security services company.
EOS reported that 35 seafarers were kidnapped from vessels in the area by Nigerian pirates in the first half of 2018, including 11 from the Dutch general cargo vessel FWN Rapide in April, the highest number of hostages taken in a single attack in 2018.
The number of pirate attacks in the Gulf of Guinea was far higher in March 2018 than it was at the same time in 2017 or 2016 - March 2018 saw 16 attacks, with 12 in 2017 and 6 in 2016 - but it has since fallen sharply.
Read more about how the maritime sector is adapting to threats of piracy and cyber-attacks by reading a Port Technology technical paper
Despite that, EOS warns that continued political instability in the oil-rich Niger Delta could result in an increase in piracy, especially in the run-up to the Nigerian elections in 2019.
Jake Longworth, Senior Intelligence Analyst at EOS Risk, said: "Most concerning this year has been the resurgence of 'petro-piracy', involving the hijacking of tankers for oil theft.
"The return of petro-piracy has been accompanied by an associated increase in the geographical reach of Nigerian pirate gangs, leading to attacks in the waters of Benin and Ghana."
"95% of attacks we recorded in Nigerian waters occurred near Bonny Island, within 60 nautical miles of the shore. Pirates operating in these waters are focussed on the kidnap of seafarers for ransom."
