Maersk doing all it can on crew change, one-third onboard over contract
The world's largest container line Maersk is spending a "lot of money" to try and fix the crew change problem but still has one-third of seafarers have been onboard longer than allowed under their contracts.
Covid-19 travel and border restrictions have impacted the shipping industry globally leaving an estimated 400,000 seafarers either stuck on vessels after their contracts expired or at home unable to start new contracts.Posted On:24-Aug-2020

Chinese fishing vessel attacked, crew wounded, Sierra Leone
Chinese longliner SHENGHAI2 was attacked by armed persons early in the morning Aug 21 on Freetown anchorage, Sierra Leone. Crew reportedly, tried to thwart an attack with ensuing fight, several crew were injured, including some seriously wounded. Dredger struck gas pipeline causing explosion and fire, 4 missing, 6 injured, Corpus Christi.
Dredger WAYMON L. BOYD caused explosion and major fire in Corpus Christi Ship Channel in the morning Aug 21, after she struck, while working, an underwater gas pipeline. Philippines activates 3 new crew change hubs to help seafarers in pandemic.
The Philippine transportation department said on Saturday, August 22, that it has activated 3 new crew change hubs in the country to help seafarers distressed by the pandemic.
The hubs are located at the Port of Manila, Port of Capinpin in Bataan and at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone
Crew change is essential for seafarers to ensure their health and wellbeing, but the travel restrictions due to the pandemic have made crew change difficult the last couple of months.

Japanese capesize bulk carrier cocaine bust, Master and senior officers detained.
Capesize bulk carrier FRONTIER FALCON was berthed at Icdas port, Turkey, Marmara sea, late Aug 19 on arrival from Colombia. On Aug 22, joint team of police anti-narcotics division and Coast Guard, searched ship’s hull and found a container or a box, attached to hull in aft section. Box contained packages with cocaine, totaling 25 kilo. Hull inspection with deployment of divers was to be continued.
