ILWU: Automation of BC Terminals to Cause Major Job Cuts
Automation of British Columbia container terminals could lead to a loss of thousands of jobs, according to a report commissioned by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada.
The study found that automation is likely to eliminate more than 9,200 marine terminal jobs across BC, taking into account new employment automation may create.
"Like many other sectors, automation is sweeping the marine industry world-wide with steep declines in employment of up to 90%. It s only a matter of time before such automation happens here too," Rob Ashton, President of the ILWU Canada, said.
"Disruption on this scale will be felt by the provincial economy and will have an acute effect in some local communities, particularly those that rely on this industry for good jobs and the economic benefits they bring locally," John O Grady, founding partner of PRISM Economics and Analysis, added.
ILWU noted that the provincial economy "stands to take a material hit from income lost in excess of CAD 600 million (USD 453.3 million) annually, with tax revenues declining more than CAD 100 million a year."
The study forecasts that 11% of middle-income employment (CAD 70,000+ per year) and 23% of high-income employment (CAD 100,000+ per year) in the community of Delta alone risk being eliminated due to future automation in the marine terminal industry. In Prince Rupert, one quarter of middle-income and two-thirds of high-income employment is at risk of elimination.
"The companies that automate these jobs out of existence stand to benefit. It is equally clear that workers, communities and governments would be left to pick up the pieces after the damage is done," said Rob Ashton.
To address job loss from automation in the marine terminal and other sectors of the economy, the ILWU Canada is calling on all federal party leaders to commit to modernize Canada s approach to labour market adjustment.
The union is also calling on all governments "to stop rewarding companies with tax breaks and subsidies when they automate good middle-class jobs out of existence to their exclusive benefit."

Deck Cargo Ship Brings Storage Bullets to Port of Richards Bay LPG Facility
The Tranglory Shipping-operated deck cargo ship Xin Si Lu has shipped four liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage bullets for the Port of Richards Bay LPG facility.
The 12,700 dwt ship delivered the 5,650 ton bullets to Transnet National Ports Authority s (TNPA) Port of Richards Bay on September 12.
According to AIS data from MarineTraffic, the ship got underway from China s Port of Zhongshan for South Africa on August 6.
The storage bullets will be part of the ZAR 1 billion (USD 68.3 million), 22,600-ton capacity mounded LPG facility which is being developed at the port by Bidvest Tank Terminals (BTT), a unit of the Bidvest Group.
The terminal will store LPG on behalf of independent LPG trader Petredec, which ships the fuel from the U.S. and the Middle East.
Construction began in October 2018 and the facility is expected to become operational in 2020. It would enable the Port of Richards Bay to cater for ships that trade, transport, store and distribute LPG.
TNPA has said it intends to use the ports as vehicles not only for storage and distribution, but also for access and transformation to ensure the sustainability of the country s energy sector.
Transnet is also planning a multi-million dollar liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and regasification terminal at the Port of Richards Bay and is looking for private sector partners to invest in and operate the facility. The state-owned company recently signed a cost-sharing agreement for a feasibility study with the World Bank s International Finance Corporation (IFC), which has committed USD 2 million to the study.
The Richards Bay Natural Gas Network (NGN) project will complement the delivery of LNG to new markets in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces through the ports of Ngqura and Saldanha Bay respectively, and will support government s future gas-to-power projects. Meanwhile, at the Port of Ngqura, TNPA is establishing an additional petroleum trading hub for Southern Africa through a new liquid bulk terminal being developed by Oil Tanking Grindrod Calulo (OTGC).

Meyer Turku Pushes Delivery of Costa Smeralda to November
Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku has delayed the delivery of Costa Cruises first LNG-powered ship by one month.
According to the shipbuilder, the cruise company s Costa Smeralda would be delivered in mid-November, instead of the previously scheduled mid-October deadline.
"With its new cruise ship LNG propulsion system … the complexity and sophistication of the ship is very high in order to make
a unique Costa-style passenger experience," Meyer Turku said, adding that the 180,000 gross ton ship is much larger than the recently built vessel at the shipyard.
In order to undertake these operations, Meyer Turku explained that it had a slower progress speed than needed, despite counter-actions.
With the new time frame, the shipbuilder "is going to deliver a highly sophisticated cruise ship in the usual high Meyer Turku quality."

Cargill, Maersk Tankers Team Up in the MR Segment
Geneva s Cargill International has agreed to enter its Medium Range (MR) fleet into the existing Maersk Tankers MR pool as part of a strategic partnership between the companies.
The move is to make a new joint pool that would significantly increase the scope of the parties MR spot tanker business, combining Maersk Tankers digital expertise with Cargill s experience in trading.
Maersk Tankers currently operates 44 vessels for 10 partners in its existing MR pool. Cargill will add its fleet of up to 20 vessels, increasing the total number of vessels to more than 60, making the new pool one of the market leaders in the MR segment.
Cargill s vessels will enter the pool from October 1, 2019, while both companies intend to attract additional vessels from other shipowners and further increase the pool s capacity over time.
The pool will be managed by Maersk Tankers, with members of Cargill s tankers team joining to provide support on a full-time basis. The new team will be located across Copenhagen, Singapore and Houston and will cover all daily commercial and operational tasks.
The agreement does not include derivatives or MR tankers for period employment, which will be handled by Cargill and Maersk Tankers independently.
"The new set-up will substantially increase the scale of the pool and give us more flexibility to offer a better service to our customers," Claus Gronborg, chief commercial officer at Maersk Tankers, said.
Digitalization and a shared passion for safety and sustainability
The joint pool will enable vessels to get exposure to the spot market, while benefiting from Maersk Tankers unique digitalized approach to trading. The company uses algorithmic trading to position vessels to improve customer service and optimize earnings for partners.
"Our teams share a passion for safety and sustainability and combine complementary skills. This partnership will bring a progressive approach to our customers, notably increased digitalization and sustainable shipping," said Olivier Josse, global head of tankers, Cargill Ocean Transportation.
Both Cargill and Maersk Tankers are committed to reducing emissions and strive to play a leading role in moving the shipping industry towards a more sustainable future. The new joint pool will harness their combined expertise in fuel optimization, reducing bunker consumption and CO2 emissions.
