UN chief calls for relief for seafarers on World Maritime Day.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday asked for relief for seafarers on the occasion of World Maritime Day, which falls on Sept. 24.
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the professionalism and sacrifice of the 2 million seafarers who serve on the world's merchant fleet, said Guterres in a message. Maritime Safety Committee adopts resolution on Recommended action for crew change
IMO Member States meeting during an extraordinary session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) have called on all Governments to take urgent action to resolve the humanitarian and safety crisis faced by the international shipping community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Committee adopted a resolution on Recommended action to facilitate ship crew change, access to medical care and seafarer travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, which urges specific action to address the issue, including designating seafarers as key workers with access to the necessary safe travel arrangements.Posted On:24-Sep-2020

Release of containers at Port of Antwerp will be digitalized.
Port of Antwerp is taking the next step in the development of a digitally secured port. "Certified Pick up" a digital, secure and integrated solution for the release of containers, will start from January 1st 2021 and will replace the current system of PIN codes. German Capesize bulk carrier troubled in Bosphorus.
Capesize bulk carrier E R BAYONNE suffered mechanical failure while transiting Bosphorus Strait in northern direction, in front of Kanlica, Beykoz, Istanbul, at around 0820 UTC Sep 23. Disabled ship was taken under control by several tugs, completed transit and was anchored at Istanbul outer anchorage in Black sea. Philippines: PPA COVID-19 Molecular Testing Center for seafarers now operational.
With the end goal to facilitate the movement of seafarers to and from the country, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has formally opened a dedicated RT-PCR Molecular Testing Laboratory for this purpose.
With a daily testing capacity of approximately 2,000 and a 24 to 48-hour turnaround time for results, the new facility will cater to the testing requirements for crew-change hub ports controlled by the PPA.Posted On:24-Sep-2020

Singapore relaxes rules to assist crew changes
SINGAPORE has relaxed certain rules for crew changes, including a shorter quarantine period for seafarers coming from low-risk countries.

India: 450 seafarers quarantined on board for weeks on ships near Port Blair.
A suspected coronavirus outbreak on 20 ships off the coast of a tiny Indian island has left 300 ill seafarers stranded on board without basic medical supplies for weeks, international maritime charity Sailors Society has reported.
