Crew changes twice as stressful for businesses since Covid-19 pandemic
Over 90 per cent of shipping businesses are re-thinking how crew changes are managed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to new research carried out by specialist travel management company, ATPI Marine & Energy.
Almost half of research respondents (45 per cent) state that crew changes have become at least twice as time consuming and stressful compared to pre-Covid times.

India: Seafarers Stranded On Board Cruise In Mumbai Allowed To Disembark
Stranded seafarers on board cruise ship Marcella Discovery anchored in Mumbai since April last year finally got permission to release the Indian crew. The seafarers of the cruise will go through the mandatory COVID test and be quarantined in a port trust-building before being released further. Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackerays office released a press note regarding stating this.

Gulf of Guinea accounts for 95% global seafarers kidnapping
Lives of boat captains, seafarers and goods are at the risk following the continued kidnap of crew members along the Gulf of Guinea.
According to the 2020 annual report by the International Maritime Bureau, 135 crew were kidnapped globally from their vessels in 2020, with the Gulf of Guinea accounting for over 95 per cent of crew numbers kidnapped.

Brazil includes port workers in priority group to receive Covid-19 vaccine
Although there is no date for vaccinations to start yet, the group's access to vaccine provides relief to these essential workers, who have continued working since the beginning of the pandemic, Portos do Paraná executives said.
The port of Paranagua is located in the state of Parana, in southern Brazil. In the Paraná State Health Department's plan, which follows the National Vaccination Plan - define the priority group adding truck drivers, road and rail passengers, air transport workers, and port workers, there are at least 51,637 workers.

In a radical shift from the often time-consuming and laborious process of negotiating repair and retrofit contracts, the digital model is designed to provide instant quotes for routine repairs, show shipyard availability, and give owners and operators priority access to available shipyard slots.
NMS managing director Ege Akcasoy said that the network of participating shipyards is likely to be expanded from the initial ten companies with facilities in China, Indonesia, Oman, Singapore, South Korea and Turkey.

Dozens of Bulkers Remain Stranded off China as Coal Standoff Drags On

Saga Becomes First Cruise Line to Require COVID-19 Vaccinations
The UK travel company Saga Cruises has become the first cruise line to announce that it is requiring all passengers to be vaccinated for COVID-19 to sail on its cruise ships. While there have been rumors that the cruise industry might require vaccinations, Saga’s announcement makes them the first of the ocean-going cruise lines to establish the policy.

Salvage: vessels sunk and grounded in Turkey and Asia
In Turkey, river-sea hybrid cargo vessel Arvin broke up and sank at anchorage near Bartin on the Black Sea coast.
The Palau-flagged vessel was sailing from Poti, Georgia, to Burgas, Bulgaria when it anchored at Bartin to shelter from a storm. Local reports said a large wave struck the 20-year-old ship and split it in two before it sank. Search and rescue teams were mobilised and rescued six of the vessel s 12 crew, who had made it to a lifeboat; six crew lost their lives.

An accident involving crude oil tanker and tug took place at Valdez Oil Terminal Alaska, on Jan 11, details of an accident having been released on Jan 19. Crude oil tanker POLAR ENDEAVOUR was about to leave terminal after she completed oil loading, when she was struck by maneuvering tug COURAGEOUS, after the tug suddenly went out of control.

Up to 100 containers lost by mega container ship in North Pacific.
Up to 100 drifting containers reported drifting NW of Honolulu, on Jan 17. Containers were lost by MAERSK ESSEN en route from Xiamen to Los Angeles, the ship took a sharp turn southeast after crossing this area. Awaiting confirmation.
Jan 20 UPDATE: Confirmed it s MAERSK ESSEN, up to 750 containers may be affected, either lost or collapsed and damaged.
