IMO Urges Unnecessary Delays to Ships amid Coronavirus Are Prevented |
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has sent a letter to its member states amid the outbreak of the novel coronavirus asking them to undertake all possible measures to prevent unnecessary delays of ships.
The IMO urged state authorities and control regimes, companies and shipmasters to cooperate to ensure that, where appropriate, passengers can be embarked and disembarked, cargo operations can occur, ships can enter and depart shipyards for repair and survey, stores and supplies can be loaded, certificates can be issued and crews can be exchanged.

Ships Trading with North Korea Will Not Be Flying Palau Flag |
Vessels that violate the current United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs) on trading with North Korea will not be registered with the Palau International Ship Registry (PISR), the ship registry said.
As informed, both the registry and the Palau government have taken strong measures to ensure a proper vessel screening before ships are registered under the Palau flag.

BIMCO: Coronavirus Comes at the Worst Time for Shipping |
The outbreak of the coronavirus, originating from Wuhan, China, comes at one of the worst time for the shipping industry, which is currently struggling with the additional fuel costs from IMO 2020 and the switch to low-sulphur fuels, according to BIMCO.
"Demand is destroyed in China due to the coronavirus. Demand stemming from consumer spending, power generation and industrial production is lost every day that large parts of China remain quarantined. That demand will not necessarily rebound once the virus is contained," Peter Sand, BIMCO Chief Shipping Analyst, said.

Port Houston in Texas, US has selected a lead engineer and designer for part of its project to widen and deepen the Houston ship channel for the next generation in safety, efficiency and larger ships.
HDR has signed a contract with the port covering engineering, design, project coordination and other consultation services for two of six segments in the port s channel improvement initiative.
