'Digitalization and Blockchain boon to seafarer profession'
Digitalization and Blockchain could be a boon to seafarers in all parts of their profession, while their paperwork too could now be secure from fraudulent activities.
Seafarers who had faced welfare issues, could also update information about companies, agents and agencies that are problematic and could be a source of warning and red flag for others to be on alert. Information they upload could not be easily changed or tampered with if Blockchain is used, Rev, Nitin Dethe from Mission to Seafarers said at the Data Connect event held in Colombo.
"Fraudulent agencies would find it difficult to operate, while in the long run, the seafarers would benefit," he said.
The event was organized by DataccioConnect in association with the Sri Lankan Chapter of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA).
"Technology has made tasks and operations much easier in all walks of life and how we adopt new technology, to benefit the seafarers is up to you. As responsible members of the maritime community, companies and those in decision making, need to be more sympathetic to the welfare and needs of the seafarers.
We need to direct our efforts to integrate technology to face challenges of seafarers welfare, while the use of Blockchain technology would help the seafarers immensely, in getting authentic information concerning vessels of shipping companies and crewing agencies and checking on complaints lodged by previous employees before joining a vessel or signing contracts. Seafarers need to be vigilant and gather possible information they could find before signing contract with the respective agency," he said.
Connectivity, upgrading of skills of seafarers, piracy, abandonment, wages, criminalisation of seafarers, repatriation, shore level, port welfare are some of the problems faced by seafarers at the moment.
He said further that technology could play a vital role in mitigating key issues faced by the seafarers to a great extent.

Sempra Energy Unit Gets US Non-FTA Approval for Liquefaction-Export Project In Mexico
Sempra Energy s subsidiary Energia Costa Azul (ECA) LNG received two authorizations from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to export US produced natural gas to Mexico and to re-export LNG to countries that do not have a free-trade agreement (non-FTA) with the US.
Natural gas will be sourced from the company s Phase 1 and Phase 2 liquefaction-export facilities in development in Baja California, Mexico.
"ECA LNG will source natural gas from some of the fastest-growing production regions in the U.S. and provide our customers with a competitive advantage in accessing world markets, especially Asia," Joseph A. Householder, president and chief operating officer for Sempra Energy, commented.
"The authorizations are another step forward in the development of this project that could bring many benefits for Mexico, U.S. natural gas producers and our customers and partners in greater Asia," Carlos Ruiz Sacristan, chairman and CEO of Sempra North American Infrastructure, said.
"We are pleased to continue to advance the development of ECA LNG, which can … meet the energy needs of isolated markets in Mexico and customers in Asia," he added.
ECA LNG Phase 1 is a single train LNG facility to be located adjacent to the existing LNG receipt terminal. It is expected to utilize current LNG storage tanks, marine berth and associated facilities. Phase 2 of the project will include the addition of two trains and one LNG storage tank.
The DOE authorizations allow the export of 636 billion cubic feet (Bcf) a year of US-sourced LNG from these infrastructure projects. Phase 2 of the project will require additional DOE approval in order to export its full expected capacity.
The existing ECA receipt terminal was the first LNG receipt terminal constructed on North America s West Coast. Located about 15 miles north of Ensenada, Baja California, it began commercial operations in 2008 and is capable of processing up to 1 Bcf of natural gas per day.
Last November, Sempra Energy announced that its subsidiaries IEnova and Sempra LNG had signed Heads of Agreements (HOAs) with affiliates of Total, Mitsui & Co., and Tokyo Gas for Phase 1 of the ECA LNG project, subject to reaching definitive agreements. TechnipFMC and Kiewit were selected as the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPC) contractors for the project, subject to reaching a definitive agreement on the EPC contract.
Development of the ECA LNG liquefaction project is subject to relevant conditions and financing agreements.

Matson Receives Second Aloha-Class Boxship from Philly Shipyards
Philadelphia-based Philly Shipyard (PSI) delivered the second of two Aloha-class containerships to Hawaii-based Matson Navigation Company in a ceremony on March 28.
Matson received the 3,600 TEU Kaimana Hila some six months after the first ship in the class, Daniel K. Inouye, joined the fleet in October 2018.
The 850 feet (259 meter) long ship is built with dual fuel engines that can be adapted to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is designed to operate at speeds in excess of 23 knots.
"Today s delivery marks the successful conclusion of the construction of the two largest container vessels ever built in the United States,” commented Steinar Nerbovik, Philly Shipyard president and CEO.
"By all measures, Kaimana Hila will be another wonderful addition to Matson s fleet, servicing the containership trade between the U.S. West Coast and Hawaii."
PSI further said the Kaimana Hila was the 30th vessel built in the company s 20-year history.
Philly Shipyard and Matson previously partnered on the construction of four containerships that were delivered between 2003 and 2006. All four of those vessels are currently servicing Matson s Pacific trade.
