Trinity House seafarers to stage only second protest in 500 years
Workers responsible for protecting shipping and sailors along Britain's coastline will go on strike again in Harwich on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, staff at Trinity House walked out for the first time in 500 years in a dispute over pay.
Members of the UNITE union will stage another protest on Wednesday lunchtime, after workers voted to take action against what's been described as "years of below inflation pay rises."
"he seafarers are dedicated professionals firmly committed to safety in the navigation of the sea lanes around the British Isles," Unite regional officer Miles Hubbard said.
"However, the fact that they staged the first strike in Trinity House 505-year-old history on 3 April underlines their strength of feeling on the pay issue.
"In 2017, the employer imposed a one per cent pay increase which Unite members voted overwhelmingly to reject. Talks, including a pay increase for the year starting April 2018, continued, but eventually run aground.
"Unless there is substantial movement by Trinity House management, more industrial action is on the cards during the spring and early summer."

HMM, FESCO to Extend Roots on China-Russia Service
South Korean major Hyundai Merchant Marine unveiled its plans to expand cooperation with Russia s FESCO on their China Russia North Service (CRN).
The company has jointly operated a China-Korea-Russia weekly service with FESCO and French shipping major CMA CGM.
With the expansion of cooperation, the current CRN will be reorganized and two of new direct services connecting Korea and Russia, named KR2 (Korea Russia Service 2) and KRS (Korea Russia Service), will be introduced in the service network of HMM.
Hyundai Merchant would deploy one 1,000 TEU vessel on the KR2, which directly connects Busan and Vostochny, while FESCO would place a 1,200 TEU vessel on the KRS, the direct service between Busan and Vladivostok. The commencement date of respective service is on May 11 for KR2 and on May 14 for KRS.
The current CRN will also change its port rotation to Qingdao-Shanghai-Ningbo-Vladivostok from May 14.
"HMM expects to provide a faster and more reliable service through increased cooperation with FESCO. Based on those three services, HMM will strengthen its market position in Russia," a company representative said.
Hyundai Merchant teamed up with FESCO and CMA CGM on the China-Korea-Russia weekly service, namely the China Russia South Service, in March 2016. Prior to the launch, HMM has been jointly operating the two services KRS and KR2 with FESCO.

Jinhui Shipping Buys Supramax Pair
Hong Kong-based Jinhui Shipping and Transportation has purchased two Supramax bulkers from Greek ship manager Chartworld Shipping Corporation.
The ships in question are the 2001-built Aigeorgis and the 2002-built Aifanourios. The company said that the units were acquired for a total of USD 12 million, or USD 5.75 million and USD 6.25 million respectively.
The units, featuring around 50,300 dwt, are scheduled to join their new owner by early June 2019.
Jinhui Shipping and Transportation described the purchase prices of the vessels as "highly attractive", adding that the additions would enable the group to expand its overall cargo carrying capacity while minimising risks of over allocation of capital to additional tonnages due to changes in maritime regulations going forward.
The company currently owns eighteen dry bulk vessels, including two Port-Panamax and sixteen Supramax units.
The transactions are contrary to Jinhui Shipping’s recent strategy of downsizing its bulk carrier fleet. Since 2016 the company disposed of a number of its units, with the latest sale undertaken in January this year when the company disposed of the 2001-built, 50,209-dwt Supramax Jin Zhou for USD 7.38 million.

HMM s CEO Seeks to Strengthen Ties with 2M Alliance
The new CEO of South Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) revealed plans to "consolidate the relationship" with 2M carriers, Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
Jae-hoon Bae, who was appointed as HMM s President and CEO last month, will be visiting Denmark and Switzerland, the countries where the 2M partners are headquartered, this week.
The purpose of the CEO s visit is reportedly the extension of a strategic deal with 2M. Bae wants South Korean shipping company to become a full 2M member next year, the Wall Street Journal cited a person with knowledge of HMM s efforts as saying.
Back in 2017, HMM signed the agreement with Maersk and MSC, launching the parties strategic cooperation on East-West trades. The three-year strategic cooperation is set to expire in April 2020 but has an extension option.
The deal includes a series of slot exchanges and slot purchases on the abovementioned route, as well as 2M taking over a number of charters and operations of vessels currently chartered to HMM.
Last year, industry analysts expressed their concerns that HMM would part its ways with 2M once the deal expires. The strategic cooperation was described as disadvantageous to HMM as the South Korean company is not a full member of the alliance.
What is more, HMM is not the only 2M Alliance strategic partner. In July last year, Maersk and MSC inked a strategic agreement with shipping company ZIM, deciding to swap slots on five loops on the Asia-US East Coast trade. The carriers expanded their cooperation in January 2019 as they agreed to share slots on select 2M services also on the Asia-US West Coast and Asia-Mediterranean trade lanes.
In December 2018, HMM was still not sure what course its relationship with 2M would take. The company, however, told World Maritime News that it maintained good ties with the alliance partners.
During his European tour this week, HMM s CEO will be also visiting the European headquarter of HMM, located in London. Furthermore, Bae will meet Kitack Lim, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to share opinions and views on the IMO 2020 environmental regulation and upcoming regulatory measure on CO2 emissions.

Ship Manager, Owner Face Pollution Charges in US
Manager, owner and the Chief Engineer of the cargo vessel Nederland Reefer have been indicted for falsification of pollution records, obstruction of justice and witness tampering.
A federal grand jury in Wilmington, Delaware, returned a six-count indictment charging Chartworld Shipping Corporation, Nederland Shipping Corporation, and Chief Engineer Vasileios Mazarakis, according to the U.S Department of Justice.
The charges stem from the falsification of records and other acts designed to cover up from the Coast Guard the overboard discharges of oily mixtures and machinery space bilge water from the Bahamian-flagged cargo ship.
According to the indictment, on February 21, 2019, the Nederland Reefer entered the Port of Delaware Bay with a false and misleading Oil Record Book available for inspection by the USCG. The Oil Record Book failed to accurately record transfers and discharges of oily wastewater on the vessel.
The three defendants were all charged with failing to maintain an accurate oil record book as required by the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships. The defendants were also charged with falsification of records, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering for destroying evidence of the illegal discharges and directing lower level crew members to withhold evidence from the Coast Guard.
Finally, the corporate defendants were charged with the failure to report a hazardous condition to the Coast Guard, namely a breach in the hull of the vessel and resulting incursion of seawater into tanks on board the vessel that occurred before the vessel came to port in Delaware.

Kairos Supplies LNG in 1st STS Bunkering Op for Wes Amelie
Wes Amelie, the world s first containership retrofitted with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine, has received LNG in a ship-to-ship (STS) operation from the world s largest LNG bunker supply vessel Kairos.
The operation took place in the anchorage area in front of Visby, Sweden, on April 21, 2019.
As explained, the transfer of LNG between the two vessels marks an important step in several aspects, with Wes Amelie having received LNG for the first time from a bunker supply vessel and the Baltic Sea seeing the first STS LNG bunker operation for a vessel of that kind.
"We are proud that in cooperation with Unifeeder and Wessels Reederei we have been able to provide a … ship-to-ship LNG fuelling solution for Wes Amelie. The successful operation proves again that LNG is becoming a fuel for all segments in the shipping sector and that the availability of the molecules is secured in Northwest Europe," Mahinde Abeynaike, CEO of Nauticor, commented.
Owned by Wessels Reederei, Wes Amelie was the first of its kind to run on the environmentally-friendly fuel, when the vessel was retrofitted in 2017. Deployed on a feeder route between Rotterdam and the Baltics, the vessel is operated by Unifeeder.
"As one of the first movers in the use of LNG as fuel for container vessels, we have a substantial interest in developing a comprehensive LNG supply infrastructure. The development of ship-to-ship supply chains, such as the one offered by Nauticor with Kairos, is an important step towards a more efficient LNG distribution," Hans Staal, Head of Bunker Procurement of Unifeeder, said.
"The container feeder segment is predestined for the use of LNG as marine fuel and ship-to-ship LNG bunkering is an elementary component," Christian Hoepfner, Managing Director of Wessels Marine, pointed out.
"Wes Amelie has … shown that the use of LNG substantially benefits the environment along the feeder routes and raises advantages for the operators. Therefore, we are working on a number of similar projects to rapidly expand the fleet of eco-friendly vessels converted to LNG," he added.
