COVID led to spike in maritime distress calls
Maritime satcom giant Inmarsat has released a report analyzing data from Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) calls made from 2018 to 2021. Among the key findings from the Inmarsat data is that there was an abrupt spike in GMDSS calls in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Russian trawler burned out off Vladivostok, Captain hospitalized
Fire erupted in engine room of trawler IKLARAND in Amurskiy Bay, Vladivostok, Russia, Japan sea, at around 0040 LT (UTC +10) Jun 9.
