THORCO s ship aground on Atoll in French Polynesia waters
General cargo ship THORCO LINEAGE ran aground on northern outline of Raroia Atoll, Frencho Polynesia, in position 15 56S 142 19W, in the morning Jun 24, while en route from Baltimore USA to Hobart Australia. No reports on oil leaks or water ingress, 18 crew remain on board. Understood no salvage plan yet, no salvors nominated. According to ship s track, she reduced speed when sailing into Archipelago, tried to clear Raroia, but for reason unknown, ran straight into Atoll northern boundary.

Founder of CMA CGM Jacques Saade Dies at 81
Jacques R. Saade, the founder of the French shipping major CMA CGM, passed away on June 24, 2018 at the age of 81. Saade established the Compagnie Maritime d Affretement (CMA) in September 1978, 40 years ago, after leaving Lebanon following the civil war in the country. The company started off with 4 employees, a single ship and only one maritime service between Marseilles and Beirut.

Wisdom Marine Orders Kamsarmax at JMU
Taiwanese shipping company Wisdom Marine Lines is steaming ahead with its fleet build-up plans. To that end, the company has approved the purchase of a 82,400 dwt Nox Tier III bulk carrier from Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU). Wisdom Marine plans to assign a total of USD 34 million for the construction of the ship.

Vietnam Approves Vinalines Restructuring Plan
Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) has received an approval for its equitization plan under which it will sell a part of the existing state capital and issue more shares to raise its charter capital. After equitization, the parent company will have a chartered capital of VND 14.04 billion (USD 614,250), including a state capital of VND 11.9 billion.

Container ship MSC PERLE crew found marijuana in engine room
Master of container ship MSC PERLE reported to Manzanillo Port Authorities, that the crew found suspicious packages in seawater inlet in engine room. A thorough check was carried out by Navy and CG team, 50 packages of marijuana weighing 58 kilos were seized. The ship arrived at Manzanillo on Jun 21 from Callao Peru, as of 0500 UTC Jun 23 she was still in port. MSC PERLE is engaged on ACSA 2 Service, her next port of call is Tokyo.

Tanker breached, major oil spill in Rotterdam Video Update
Jun 24: According to latest official statements, some 200 tons of fuel oil leaked. There are a lot of complaints from locals on strong smell, people who are suffering from nausea, headache or dizziness, are advised to call doctor. Nearby beaches announced to be not safe, for the time being. Cleansing is under way.

First Yamal LNG Cargo Shipped to Spain
Yamal LNG has shipped the first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Spanish company Gas Natural Fenosa under a long-term offtake agreement, PAO Novatek informed.
The 172,636 cbm Arc7 ice-class LNG carrier Fedor Litke unloaded the first cargo in the port of Ferrol earlier this week. The 2017-built ship made an eleven-day voyage from Siberia to Reganosa’s Mugardos terminal.

Fincantieri Splashes Costa Cruises New Ship
Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has held a float-out ceremony of Costa Venezia, the first Costa cruise ship designed and built specifically for the Chinese market.
The ceremony was held on June 22 at the shipyard in Monfalcone, where the ship is being built for Costa Cruises, the Italian company of Carnival Corporation.
At a length of 323 meters and measuring 135,500 gross tons, Costa Venezia will enter service in March 2019, once the interior fittings have been completed.

2nd Stage of LNG Croatia s Open Season Process Kicks Off
LNG Croatia has opened the second round of binding phase of the Open Season process for its planned LNG terminal. The call to bids comes just days after the country s parliament passed a law allowing the construction of the terminal.
The previous tender scheduled for April 2018 was postponed as there was a lack of interest on behalf of companies to secure a portion of the terminal s capacity.

Maersk Boxship Delayed by EU Migration Impasse
The container ship Alexander Maersk has been delayed off Sicily with 113 maritime migrants aboard as Europe s debate over maritime migration continues. The delay confirms an earlier warning from the International Chamber of Shipping about the dispute s effects on merchant ships, which are obligated to rescue individuals in distress.
ICS has warned that shipping will bear a greater burden of rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean now that Italy is blocking NGO search and rescue operations. "Following the election of the new Italian Government, the crisis now seems to be taking an ever more political direction,” ICS said in a recent statement.

India s major ports cargo traffic share hits 58%: Report
The share of country s cargo traffic handled by top 12 major ports is on increase and has reached 58 percent in 2017-18, a government report said. On the contrary, traffic handled by about 200 minor ports, either on the control of the state governments or private players, has been on the decline from 2014-15. Earlier, a parliamentary panel expressed concern over minor ports eating into the share of major ports.

Cosco Shipping to Put Long Beach Terminal in U.S. Trust
China-based Cosco Shipping Holdings Co. is considering putting a container terminal at the Port of Long Beach in a U.S.-run trust in response to concerns raised by federal regulators regarding the shipping company s pending ownership of the facility, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The WSJ report, citing unnamed sources, said, "Cosco executives met with officials from the Committee on Foreign Investment officials last week in Washington and proposed to place the terminal in a third-party trust under U.S. management for up to a year."

Port of Long Beach Grant Supports Zero-Emissions Future
The Port of Long Beach is moving ahead with a $16.8 million project to build infrastructure to support electric-powered, zero-emissions cargo-handling equipment, and to demonstrate the world s first heavy-duty, off-road, direct current fast-charging system in a seaport environment.
Funded in part by an $8 million California Energy Commission grant, the Port Advanced Vehicle Electrification (PAVE) Project supports the first phase of a transition to a zero-emissions future at Total Terminals International’s container terminal at Pier T, the Port s largest.

Iran s Chabahar Port to be operational by 2019
India declared to make Chabahar Port in Iran operational by 2019, regardless of threat of transformed US sanctions against Tehran.
Chabahar port complex in Iran is a new transportation access strip for land-locked Afghanistan, which may result in opening way for millions of dollars in trade and cut its dependence on Pakistan.
