Alfa Laval: BWTS Installation Not to Be Taken Lightly
A year after the ratification of the IMO Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention in September 2017, the process of installation of the system aboard ships has proven to be more than a walk in the park.
Shipowners have been urged to take time to plan the installation process ahead of the expected rise in demand for ballast water treatment systems from September 2019 in the retrofit segment, which is where most of the activity is today.

Klaveness Combination Carriers Raises USD 45 Mn for New Ships
In an effort to finance its newbuild vessels, owner and operator of combination carriers Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) has managed to raise USD 45 million through the private placement of common shares.
Following the successful closing of the private placement, the company will issue 8,241,750 common shares at a subscription price of USD 5.46 per share for aggregate gross proceeds of USD 45 million.

Northern Kuril Islands cut off mainland after ferry collision, Russia
Passenger ship GIPANIS, which is connecting Petropavlovsk Kamchatka with Severo-Kurilsk port, Paramushir island, northern Kuril Archipelago, collided with pier while berthing at Severo-Kurilsk on Sep 23. Bow stern was breached, hole was temporarily patched up, the ship sailed to Petropavlovsk Kamchatka for repairs same day, without passengers. Passengers bound for Petropavlovsk were left behind, with no other means to reach Petropavlovsk.

Australia s New Antarctic Icebreaker Floated
Damen Shipyards Galati has undertaken the float-out of Australia s new Antarctic icebreaker, RSV Nuyina. The procedure was achieved by raising the water level in the yard s dry dock by six metres; a process taking two days to complete. Once afloat, the vessel was manoeuvred 250 metres to a quayside berth where the ongoing construction and outfitting process will take place.

Teekay: Second Yamal LNG Icebreaker Delivered in Russia
Rudolph Samoylovich, the second ice-class LNG vessel provided by Teekay to the Yamal LNG project, was delivered to the charterer on September 6, 2018, in Sabetta, Russia.
At the request of the charterer, the 172,000 cbm vessel was handed over almost three months earlier than anticipated, as explained by Teekay.

GAZPROM bunker tanker aground, Black sea
Bunker tanker GAZPROMNEFT ZUID-WEST ran aground at around 2000 UTC Sep 22 on a coast southeast of Novorossiysk, Russia, Black sea, while en route from Novorossiysk to Tuapse. According to track, tanker should hard aground she headed straight for coast at full speed, most probably because of bridge watch failure.

Pirates Kidnap 12 Crew off Nigeria
Twelve crew members of a Swiss bulk carrier MV Glarus were taken hostage while in Nigerian waters on September 22, Reuters reports citing a statement from the ship s operator Massoel Shipping.
Based on the statement, the ship was underway, loaded with a cargo of bulk wheat, around 45 nautical miles southwest of Bonny Island when Glarus was boarded by a gang of pirates, who took 12 out of 19 crew members hostage.

S.Korea: Growth of seaport cargo slows on Sino-U.S. trade row
Cargo processed at South Korean seaports has grown at a slower-than-expected pace this year in the wake of an intensifying trade row between the United States and China, data showed Friday.
Container cargo handled at South Korea s largest port of Busan stood at 12.44 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first seven months, up 4 percent from the same period a year earlier, according to the port authority.

Cabotage law relaxation to boost trade at Cochin Port
The long-awaited relaxation in the cabotage law, which prohibited foreign-flagged vessels from engaging in coastal shipping of the country, is expected to give a fillip to the trans-shipment volumes handled at Cochin Port. At present, volumes at International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) stand at 6 per cent out of the over five lakh TEUs container cargo and this is expected to go up by 12 per cent in the current fiscal.
