India: Cargo ferry service to strengthen Maldives-India friendship: PM Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the Maldives-India Cargo Ferry Service would boost the economies and strengthen the friendship between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi said this while replying to a tweet from the Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
"Our thanks to Prime Minister @narendramodi and Government of India as the Maldives-India Cargo Ferry Service goes on its maiden voyage today between Kulhudhuffushi, Male and South India.

India: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Mumbai Port Trust draw CAG s ire
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has charged the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust authorities for incurring a loss of Rs 54.72 crore in 2015-17 in their decision to award an adjacent berth to the same entity operating the existing berth at a lower revenue share without safeguarding the financial interests of the port trust.
The port trust suffered the loss since the concessioner Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) diverted the traffic from the existing berth to the new berth.

India: SAROD-Ports will attract more private funding into Indian ports: ICRA
The credit rating agency ICRA Ratings noted that launch of SAROD-Ports (Society for Affordable Redressal of Disputes - Ports) by the union ministry of shipping is a much needed alternative step to resolve/reduce the disputes in the Indian ports sector in less time and in a cost-effective manner thus will attract more private investments.
SAROD-Port is a newly launched for dispute resolution mechanism in the maritime sector, comprising of major ports, non-major ports and PPP players operating at major ports.

India: Container cargo handling at major ports drops about 25% in April-August: IPA
Container cargo handling at India's major ports fell about 25 per cent during April-August amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to ports body IPA data.
Container cargo in terms of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) at India s 12 major ports dropped 25 per cent to 3.25 million in the the April-August period of the current fiscal, showed the latest data from the Indian Ports Association (IPA).

India: MUI collaborates with UN to help stranded Indian seafarers.
Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic leaving around four lakh global seafarers, including thousands of Indians, stranded on ships, India's oldest union of merchant navy officers MUI has collaborated with the United Nations to assist these sailors.
The Seafarers Crisis Action Team (SCAT) has been established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), a specialised UN agency and a global standard-setting authority of safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping.

Cargo ship caught in rough weather, sank, Gulf of Kutch
Cargo ship MSV KRISHNA SUDAMA sank at night Sep 26 in Gulf of Kutch, northwest India, Arabian sea, some 10 nm off Okha, Gujarat State. The ship was loaded with 905 tons of rice and sugar, destined for Djibouti. Indian Coast Guard Ship C-411 responded, all 12 crew of MSV KRISHNA SUDAMA were found and rescued, in challenging conditions of nighttime and rough weather.

Russian ro-ro ship fire at Hakata, Japan
Fire erupted on cargo deck of Russian ro-ro HANSUNG, berthed at Hakata, Fukuoka, northwest Kyushu island, Japan, in the afternoon Sep 27. Understood loaded second-hand cars somehow, caught fire. It took firefighters some 3 hours to extinguish the fire, more than a dozen cars were destroyed by fire. One Russian crew suffered hands burns and was hospitalized. The ship arrived at Hakata on Sep 23, from Vladivostok, Russia.

Maersk calls for action as stranded seafarer roll call hits 400,000.
Major companies are now getting involved in the seafarer crisis. Maersk, Unilever and Procter & Gamble, among others, have called for a solution to the crisis which has led to some 400,000 seafarers stuck on ships - some for as long as 17 months. The UN is urging governments to designate them as key workers to facilitate their movement through borders and ports. Another 400,000 are waiting on shore to relieve them - with little or no pay.

Cargo ship capsized along berth, Indonesia.
Cargo ship, identified by local sources as OCEAN SHIP 2, managed by Kartika Samudera Indah company, capsized with starboard resting on pier at Tapaktuan Port, northwest North Sumatra, Indonesia, on Sep 25. The ship was berthed since Nov 2018, after delivering a cargo of cement, understood abandoned for reasons unknown. She was suffering developing list during at least a week prior to capsizing, due to lack of maintenance and water ingress. Understood it s a general cargo ship OCEAN SHIP, IMO 8614247, with no available AIS records, history.

Another seven crew members from ship off Port Hedland test positive for COVID-19.
Seven more crew members from a bulk carrier anchored off the Western Australian coast near Port Hedland have tested positive for COVID-19.
A total of nine crew from the Patricia Oldendorff have now tested positive to the virus, WA Health Minister Roger Cook confirmed, following testing overnight.

Philippines: Capitol to issue guidelines on return of seafarers to support crew change hub in Cebu.
The provincial government will be laying down guidelines for the return of seafarers in support of the planned activation of a crew change hub at the ports of Cebu.
Department of Transportation (DOTr) Assistant Secretary Narciso Vingson Jr. recently visited the Capitol to present a plan to activate the crew change hub here, which will already become the fourth in the country.
