India: Rs 140 cr to be spent on modernisation of Kochi harbour.
Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) is set to work with Cochin Port Trust (CPT) to modernise Kerala's pivotal Cochin Fisheries Harbour with over a dozen key features that will enhance the unit value of realisation of sea-caught items and minimise post-harvest losses. MPEDA Chairperson K S Srinivas signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with his CPT counterpart M Beena, initiating the Rs 140-crore project that will mobilise resources from various central government schemes.

Philippines: Marina extends anew the validity of expiring STCW certificates.
The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) extends the validity of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) certificates of seafarers which are expiring from March 13, 2020, to December 31, 2020.
STCW certificates are pre-deployment requirements for seafarers as proof that they are compliant with the minimum standards of competence, age, medical fitness, and approved sea-going service.

Greenpeace activists drop boulders into the North Sea to stop illegal fishing.
Trawling is a method of fishing that involves pulling a fishing net through the water behind one or more boats. Trawl gear affects the environment in both direct and indirect ways. Direct effects include scraping and ploughing of the substrate, sediment resuspension, destruction of benthos, and dumping of processing waste. Indirect effects include post‐fishing mortality and long‐term trawl‐induced changes to the benthos.

Boxship Crewmember Charged in Connection With Stabbing Death.
A crewmember from the container ship MSC Ravenna has been arrested in Los Angeles and charged with one count of "performing an act of violence against a person onboard a ship that is likely to endanger the safe navigation of the ship," a federal offense.
Philippine national Michael Dequito Monegro, 41, allegedly used two knives to stab a crewmate on the MSC Ravenna on September 20 while the vessel was en route to the Port of Los Angeles.

Work Proceeding on the Largest Containership LNG Conversion to Date.
Work is underway on a unique project converting a traditional containership to be able to use liquefied natural gas as its fuel. Contracted in March 2019, conversion of the 15,000 TEU Hapag-Lloyd container ship Sajir will be the first mega-container vessel to be converted to dual-fuel operation.
"With this unique pilot project, we hope to learn for the future and to pave the way for large ships to be retrofitted to use this promising alternative fuel.
