Intervene Now to Stop a Humanitarian Crisis at Sea
The shipping industry is facing one of the most significant humanitarian crises in a generation. Hundreds of thousands of seafarers are either unable to leave a ship and staying well beyond their normal tours of duty, or they can t travel to replace fellow exhausted crew members.
On Tuesday, global industry and human-rights leaders will sign the Neptune Declaration on Seafarer Well-being and Crew Change.

The seafarer crisis - a shipping problem being passed from port to port
A major maritime crisis is getting so bad some seafarers are injuring themselves just to get home.
The problem is turning up at our door. Some of these crews are arriving with unpaid wages. Others haven’t touched dry land since the start of the pandemic while a few are badly in need of medical assistance.

Norwegian requiring its crew members to get the COVID-19 vaccine
Norwegian Cruise Line and its Regent Seven Seas Cruises brand will be asking all of its crew members to receive the COVID-19 vaccine prior to boarding, the cruise companies spokespeople told Insider in an email statement.
It s just the latest sign that cruise sailings won t be departing any time soon.

India: GSAI wants govt to make pension scheme permanent
The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) on Saturday resolved to demand with the government to make the Seafarers Welfare Pension Scheme permanent.
The GSAI will also request and follow up for an extension of Provident Fund, gratuity and pension for the seafarers on the passenger ships.

Interstate travel, ship crews using illegal jetties caused spike in cases in Labuan
Inter-state travel and ship crews using illegal jetties led to a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases in Labuan.
Labuan Health Department director Dr Ismuni Bohari said the return of students from Sabah to Labuan for the new semester at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) here earlier this month caused a new cluster to emerge, namely the Jalan Mohammed Salleh Cluster, and has produced 30 cases as at yesterday.

Migrant ship allowed to dock in Sicily in stormy Mediterranean
A rescue vessel carrying 373 migrants who were picked up off the Libyan coast was allowed to disembark in Italy yesterday, as heavy storms closed in.
The Ocean Viking had been bouncing on six-foot swells after picking up the migrants from four packed dinghies, among them 165 children, 21 aged four or younger.

Larger goal to regain India's maritime glory: Shipping Minister
Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Mansukh Mandavia on Saturday said the government's larger goal was to regain the country's maritime glory.
Speaking at the three-day brainstorming session to coordinate between all major ports in India, Mandavia said with this Chintan Baithak, the coordination between all Major Ports will be more streamlined and able to work with more synergy, to achieve common goals.

Help definitely coming to Filipino seafarers stranded in China
The government is working to bring home seafarers stranded in China due to restrictions brought about by the pandemic.
Speaking to CNN Philippines on Sunday, Labor Secretary SIlvestre Bello III said, "Definitely, tutulungan yan ng ating gobyerno."
However, Bello said the agency did not have an office in China, so they would be working with the Department of Foreign affairs so the seafarers could come home.

Seafarers on hunger strike, hospitalised in Kuwait
Indian, Turkish, Azerbaijaniani and Bangladeshi seafarers are in the third week of a hunger strike in the port of Shuaiba, Kuwait.
The abandoned crew of the bulk carrier Ula (IMO number: 8102414) have been on hunger strike since January 7 in a desperate effort to get off the ship and recover more than $400,000 in wages owed to them.

Container ship attacked, boarded, Gulf of Guinea UPDATES 1 crew killed 15 kidnapped
According to management information, one seaman has suffered fatal injuries during the attack and 15 crew have been kidnapped. Killed crew is of Azerbaijan nationality, the rest are Turkish.
UPDATE Management Statement: Istanbul, January 24, 2021 - Managers Boden Denizcilik AS report that at appx 05.25 UTC this morning its container vessel MOZART came under attack of pirates whilst sailing in the Gulf of Guinea some 100 nautical miles off the coast of Sao Tome.

Cruise ship COSTA SMERALDA contacted crane, lifeboat destroyed
Cruise ship COSTA SMERALDA contacted port crane while berthing at Savona, Italy, on Jan 22. One of ship’s portside lifeboats broke off her davits and fell into water, practically destroyed by crane impact and by fall. The ship didn t suffer any damages, crane seems to be damaged.

Bulk carrier aground, Sri Lanka.
Bulk carrier EUROSUN loaded with cement clinker ran aground on southeast coast of Sri Lanka, NE of Hambantota, around 0000 UTC Jan 23, while en route fromAbu Dhabi to Trincomalee. As of 1330 UTC, the ship was still aground, no news yet on refloating and possible damages. Bulk carrier probably, ran onto reefs, not on coast.

Iranian and Chinese very large tankers detained for illegal activities, Indonesia
Two Very Large Crude Oil tankers, Chinese FREYA and Iranian HORSE, were detained by Indonesian Maritime Security Agency in Pontianak waters, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, for illegal oil transfer. Both ships AIS were switched off (HORSE AIS off since Jan 12, FREYA AIS off since Jan 23), both didn’t respond to VHF calls, both covered their ID, including names and IMO.

UAE: Tanker beached by storm
Tanker IBA was beached on the coast of Umm Al Quwain, UAE, Persian Gulf, during the night or in the morning Jan 24. Understood tanker broke off her anchor/anchors, and drifted aground, in strong wind, which reportedly was in the area at the time of accident. Tanker seems to be in ballast, owner already tasked with refloating her and towing away.
