Report: Socializing Can Boost Crew Wellbeing
A new report published by the International Seafarers Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) finds that onboard social interaction benefits crew wellbeing, reduces isolation and cuts down on stress.
ISWAN s Social Interaction Matters (SIM) project - sponsored by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Red Ensign Group - was launched with the objective of encouraging social interaction on board.

Singapore: MPA prohibits crew change for crew with recent South Africa and UK travel history
The Ministry of Health has announced that from 3 January 2021, 2359 hours, all long-term pass holders and short-term visitors with recent travel history to South Africa within the last 14 days will not be allowed entry into Singapore, or transit through Singapore. This is in addition to similar border restrictions imposed on travelers from the United Kingdom (UK) from 23 December 2020, 2359 hours.

Updated guidelines on the conduct of crew changes

Iran denies seized Korean ship and crew are being held as hostages
Iran denied on Tuesday it was using a South Korean ship and its crew as hostages, a day after it seized the tanker in the Gulf while pressing a demand for Seoul to release $7 billion in funds frozen under U.S. sanctions.
The seizure of the MT Hankuk Chemi and its 20-member crew near the strategic Strait of Hormuz has been seen as an attempt by Tehran to assert its demands, just two weeks before President-elect Joe Biden takes office in the United States.

ClassNK advises ships to install BWMS ahead of 2022
"As difficulties are expected in the installation of BWMS if everyone around the world waits until 2022, ClassNK recommends installing well in advance. In addition, plan approval applications are also expected to concentrate during this period, therefore early application is strongly recommended," ClassNK stated.

Ship to ship transfer safety
Ship to ship (STS) transfer is the term primarily applied to the transfer of crude oil, petroleum products, liquid bulk chemicals and liquefied gas between sea-going tankers. There is also an increasing reliance on dry bulk cargo transfers between ships, but these are not specifically considered here.

Australia fails to designate seafarers as key workers in line with IMO resolutions
In December 2020, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) passed several resolutions specifically addressing the need for seafarers, and other marine personnel, to be designated as key workers.
Australia is a notable omission from the cohort of 45 IMO member states who have already determined seafarers to be key workers.

India Sends Crew Of 43 For Antarctic Expedition In Times Of COVID
A raging pandemic couldn't stop the scientists seeking to know the Antarctic region better as a 43 member crew of scientists, researchers, and explorers are heading to Antarctica as part of India's 40th scientific expedition to Antarctica
Usually, the expedition team consists of 100 people but this time the ship is leaving only half of the crew due to the pandemic. The 43 member team will start their journey from Goa on Tuesday.

Kenya: KMA makes food donation to stranded Syrian seafarers at Mombasa Port
Chief Engineer Mohamed Abdi who has now taken command of the ill-fated stateless general cargo ship, MV Jihan stranded at the Port of Mombasa since 2019 is a worried man.
Zanzibar which was the state where the vessel was registered withdrew the flag state registration following successful lobbying by Kenyan authorities after conditions aboard the ship were found to be unbearable.

Containership and LNG Carrier Assist in Caribbean Sea Rescue
The U.S. Coast Guard last week rescued a man from a disabled sailboat in the Caribbean Sea about 114 nautical miles from Puerto Rico with assistance from the merchant ships CSCL Long Beach and Gemmata.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Juan received a notification at 11:40 p.m. last Wednesday, December 30, from the Master of the Hong Kong flagged 1,105-foot container ship CSCL Long Beach relaying a distress call from the SV Jade reporting it was disabled and adrift due to having broken sails, a damaged rudder, and not enough fuel to transit to safe harbor.

India: Cargo volumes at dozen state-owned ports decline 8.8% during April-December
The country s dozen state-owned ports handled a combined 477.755 million tonnes (mt) of cargo during April to December, 8.8 per cent lower than the 523.844 mt in the same period last year.
Barring Mormugao Port Trust, all the other 11 ports continue to suffer from volume declines triggered by the Covid-induced demand destruction.

Fishing vessel adrift deep in the Pacific, 10 crew missing
Contact was lost with Taiwanese longliner YONG YU SING NO 18 since Dec 30 in North Pacific northwest of Hawaii, on Jan 1 owner contacted Fisheries Bureau, Coast Guard, and the National Rescue Command Center (NRCC), asking for assistance. NRCC deployed US plane, on Jan 2 YONG YU SING NO 18 was spotted some 600 nm northeast of Midway island, adrift and seemingly, abandoned. Lifeboat is also missing, so probably, 10 crew left the vessel on a lifeboat.

Container ship suffered water ingress, listed, taken to port, China
Container ship HUA MAO 369 issued distress signal on Jan 2 off Xiamen, while en route from Zhuhai to Shanghai. The ship suffered water ingress in cargo hold, developing list. Xiamen port authorities managed to take HUA MAO 369 in the evening same day, just in time to avoid possible grounding of listed ship with increased draft in low tide. She was berthed, all containers are to be offloaded, the ship is to be taken to Xiamen shipyard for repairs.
