There is a greater need to maintain peace and stability within the Indian maritime zone in order to boost trade and other economic activities, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday. Singh, while addressing the second edition of the Naval Commanders’ Conference, said India envisions the Indian Ocean region with universal values such as “rule-based freedom of navigation” and “free trade” in which the interests of all participating countries are protected... -Hindustan Times

Taiwan Coastguard Rescues 14 from Stranded Cargo Ship in Typhoon
Taiwan’s Coastguard Administration was called on to rescue the crew of a general cargo ship that had gone aground in the Taiwan Strait on October 17 during the latest typhoon to hit the region. Gale force winds complicated the rescue operation, but all 14 crew were successfully removed by helicopter. The crew of the 5,500 dwt cargo ship Fortune (registered in Panama) issued a distress call Sunday morning reporting that the vessel had lost power and was drifting in the storm... -Maritime Executive

Call for maritime distress signal ’Save Our Planet’
With the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) just a fortnight away, Yara Marine Technologies CEO Thomas Koniordos has called on the shipping industry to answer the ‘Save Our Planet – SOP’ distress signal and move rapidly on decarbonisation. As previously reported, more than 150 maritime companies and organisations – including Yara – last month signed a ‘Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonisation’; which is urging governments to ‘deliver the policies that will supercharge the transition and make zero emission shipping the default choice by 2030’... -Bunkerspot

Decarbonization is our Industry’s Best Business Strategy - ABS CEO
Such is the scale of industry disruption from decarbonization that a decarbonization strategy likely is now the best business strategy for shipowners. That was the message for the industry from Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman, President, and CEO in a keynote speech to open North American Shipping Week. “Already today, it’s not enough to have a decarbonization strategy for your business. No, decarbonization is increasingly likely to be your best business strategy... -The Maritime Executive

The Swedish Maritime Administration discovered a remarkably well-preserved vessel at a depth of around 35 metres during sea measurements outside of Umea, last month. The location of the wreck outside of Holmsund has been determined, as per the reports of Vrak. It was the English cargo ship Annie that sank in 1891, according to scuba divers who have dived on the site. Scuba diver Mikael Rönnkvist said that as soon as they heard of a vast unknown wreck that was undamaged, they wanted to look it up... -Republic World

COVID-19 and Supply Chain Issues Are Stranding Sailors at Sea
The world is currently experiencing massive upheaval in the global supply chain. The world is also experiencing a pandemic. The two are connected in myriad ways — but they’ve also magnified certain aspects of one another, leading to already-difficult situations becoming more challenging for many people. Sharp-eyed diver recovers crusader sword from Med seabed
A sword believed to have belonged to a crusader who sailed to the Holy Land almost a millennium ago has been recovered from the Mediterranean seabed thanks to an eagle-eyed amateur diver, the Israel Antiquities Authority said on Monday. Though encrusted with marine organisms, the metre-long blade, hilt and handle were distinctive enough to notice after undercurrents apparently shifted sands that had concealed it... -Devdiscourse

Supply-chain crisis may be nearing its peak

Amazon and other big retailers charter bulkers as supply chains reshuffle
The disruptions in the supply chain and the lack of containers and vessels are expected to last through the holiday season this year and perhaps far into 2022, so businesses are constantly looking for new ways to keep goods flowing from Asia into the United States. Home Depot executives stated that the concept of chartering ships was suggested in jest at a meeting, but the firm, along with suppliers like Walmart, IKEA, and Costco, quickly entered the charter market... -Fleetmon
