Ship capsizes off Miri, one dead, four missing, 121 rescued.
A ship with more than 100 crew members on board is reported to be sinking in the South China Sea offshore of Miri in northern Sarawak after running into trouble in the early hours of Tuesday (Oct 27) morning.
A massive search-and-rescue operation was launched after distress signals from the Dayang Topaz were picked up.

ABS NS Launches First Ever Electronic Logbook Solution for Maritime Operations.
ABS Nautical Systems® (ABS NS) launched NS eLogs, a powerful digital solution that replaces traditional paper logbooks and brings a new dimension to compliance management through a browser-based experience. The launch follows the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) non-mandatory adoption of electronic record books on 1 October 2020, welcoming digital entries on board.

Newbuild CMA CGM container ship contacted berth.
CMA CGM Kourou collided with quay at Port of Spain on October 24th. Captain maneuvered to avoid collision with the crane. Damages are minor and everybody ashore and onboard is safe. No explosion occurred. We are working with all relevant authorities to fully assessed the damages.
Container ship CMA CGM KOUROU suffered engine failure while berthing at Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, at night Oct 24, on arrival from Philipsburg, St. Maarten, Caribbean. Reportedly, berth and the ship sustained damages, extent unknown.

India: Sagarmala Development Co to bail out idling cargo, Ropax vessels of IWAI.
The Sagarmala Development Company Ltd will step in to help deploy some of the 24 roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) as well as Ropax vessels owned by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) that are idling due to "low economic viability".
The Sagarmala Development Company will set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) with a private entity for operating the vessels on the "best possible commercial terms" by relaxing the reserve price set by the IWAI for leasing the vessels, a government official said.

Seafarers continue to face a bleak future in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the latest Seafarers Happiness Index report, published today by The Mission to Seafarers.
The survey, undertaken with the support of the Shipowners Club and Wallem Group, reports on the experiences of seafarers between July and September 2020.

Bulk carrier pushed aground by storm, Sakhalin, Russia.
Bulk carrier MERCURY OCEAN dragged anchor and drifted aground during the night Oct 25-26 at Boshnyakovo Anchorage, western Sakhalin Island coast, Tatarskiy Strait. The ship is partially loaded, she was loading coal and by the time of an accident, has some 12,000 tons of coal on board.
