Princess Cruises Vessel Opens Panama Canal s Cruise Season
The transit of Princess Cruises Island Princess through the Panama waterway has marked the beginning of what is expected to be a busy cruise season at the Panama Canal.
The 92,822 ton Island Princess, which transited northbound on October 3, originated in Vancouver, Canada, and will continue on its 21-day journey to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
According to Senior International Trade Specialist, Albano G. Aguilar, the canal will facilitate around 258 transits over the next few months, including a record-breaking number by Neopanamax vessels.
"We will see about a ten percent increase in cruise ship transits at the Panama Canal this season in comparison to last year, a boost largely driven by Neopanamax vessels," said Aguilar.
The Canal expects 29 transits by Neopanamax cruise ships this season, including at least one by the Norwegian Bliss, which remains the largest cruise ship to pass through the waterway. It will be preceded by its sister ship, the 3,883-passenger Norwegian Joy, which will pass through for the first time later this month.
Ten other vessels will also make their inaugural transits this season, including the smaller, 2,340-passenger Norwegian Dawn, as well as Ponant s Le Dumont D uwille, P&O Ventura Cruise, Carnival Cruise Line s Carnival Glory, Regent Seven Seas Cruise s Seven Seas Splendor, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours Scenic Eclipse, Star Clipper’s Flying Clipper, Hapag Lloyd s Hanseatic Inspiration and Hanseatic Nature, and Greg Mortimer s Aurora Expedition.

Drewry: Carriers, Shippers to Benefit from Future Online Platforms
Online technology platforms where shipping lines and their customers can negotiate forward contracts could help improve vessel utilisation levels and reduce freight rate volatility, a joint study by Drewry and CyberLogitec showed.
While the shipping industry has changed dramatically in recent years, the market for ocean freight services "remains exposed to the inherently dynamic nature of demand and fixed nature of supply which results in oscillating vessel load factors and freight rate volatility."
This fundamental supply and demand mismatch causes significant structural inefficiency which adversely impacts all market participants, according to Drewry.
The study assessed the ability of technology platforms to help reduce the fundamental mismatch between supply and demand in global liner shipping spot markets.
"Our study concluded that many of the market s pain points could be addressed through a capability to flexibly buy or sell ocean freight services in advance, using a neutral, global platform," said Philippe Salles, Head of e-Business, Transport and Supply Chain at Drewry Supply Chain Advisors.
"Volume commitments and capacity guarantees would provide an early visualisation of demand to the market, thereby reducing the supply-demand mismatch and rate volatility, to the benefit of all market participants."
For shipping lines, forward selling of vessel slots, underpinned by volume commitments, would put them in a stronger position to forecast their revenues and reduce their cost of capital, according to the study. The early visualisation of demand could also be linked to collaborative, dynamic capacity management and increase vessel load factors. The reduced freight rate volatility would assist in stabilising vessel P&L s and improve invoice accuracy, while the ability to sell forward will provide an effective hedge against freight rate decreases.
Additionally, the study showed that, for shippers and forwarders, the reduction in freight rate volatility and the ability to buy forward would protect their product margins and provide an effective hedge against freight rate increases. Together with space guarantees, enforced through a deposit scheme and vendor reliability scores, this would result in more stable and elevated service levels of their ocean providers that enable reduction of safety stock levels. Forward buying ocean freight provides procurement teams with an additional ocean freight procurement tool with flexible timings, thereby improving the agility of their logistics management teams, Drewry said.
Furthermore, the study also identified benefits resulting from technical platforms enabling the market for IT providers. A platform which provides these forward negotiation capabilities would be the ideal starting point to also provide the ensuing requirements involving electronic booking, documentation, freight settlement and cargo visibility. These items combined would provide "a unique position in today s market place offering unparalleled scope and exciting opportunities to optimise their customer s ocean freight experiences by eliminating other pain points."

South Africa s Cardinal Maritime Receives Ultramax Bulker
South Africa s Cardinal Maritime has taken delivery of an Ultramax bulker from Japan s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI).
The 61,000 dwt African Cardinal was delivered on September 26 from Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering in China, which is operated jointly by KHI and China COSCO Shipping.
The newbuild is the second ship in the Cardinal Maritime fleet, according to VesselsValue data. The company also owns the 2019-built MR2 tanker Eternal Sunshine.
Measuring 199 meters in length, the newly-delivered African Cardinal has a hold capacity of 77,539 cbm and incorporates energy saving technologies.
The Panama-flagged bulker features four 30-ton deck cranes along the center in between the hatch covers to enable cargo loading and unloading in ports that lack cargo handling facilities.

Traxens: First Standards for Smart Container Data Exchange Developed
French provider of container tracking solutions Traxens has led the development of the first standards for smart container data exchange published by the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT).
"We are proud to pave the way to better data integration and advanced smart container services by bringing the shipping industry together around a common standard," Mathieu Friedberg, Senior Vice President - Commercial & Agencies Network, CMA CGM Group, said.
"Such standardized solutions are key to advance digitalization and to seize all the opportunities offered by smart containers."
Although many smart containers are already in use, there are no global standards in place to capture and communicate consistently and multimodally the array of data they generate.
Business Requirements Specifications (BRS) delivers internationally standardized messaging to facilitate the use of smart container data.
Initiated in October 2017, the Smart Containers BRS project aims to provide clear global standards for the exchange of data to ensure interoperability and easy integration within different systems. Data will be generated once and shared between multiple stakeholders, platforms and systems, improving data exchange, automated workflow and alert generation, according to Traxens.
As explained, the new standards will be the basis for API development, bringing technology into every aspect of the supply chain and providing innovative tools.
"This technology can be combined with other innovations such as blockchain, big data or data pipelines to provide even more uses in the trading community. In all of these cases, though, we see that creating clear, unambiguous message exchange standards will unlock the further potential of enhanced data," Jacques Delort, managing director of Traxens, commented.
"Thanks to smart containers standardized messages, the computer representation of the supply chain will become synchronized with the physical world, increasing the speed and accuracy of decision-making, the automation as part of transport and logistics execution and the … collaboration between stakeholders," Hanane Becha, innovation & standards senior manager at Traxens, said.
"Enhanced data will improve visibility and predictability for stakeholders as well as for regulatory agencies who need detailed information on consignments before they arrive at the border."
Earlier this year, Danish shipping major Maersk decided to join its counterparts CMA CGM and the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) as a key shareholder and customer of Traxens.
The company agreed in May to invest capital in Traxens, order up to 50,000 Trazens devices and have similar shareholder rights as the two other abovementioned shipping companies.

Yamal LNG Shipments to Asia Pacific via NSR Jump in 2019
Russian gas company Novatek said that planned 2019 volumes of LNG delivered eastbound to the Asian Pacific markets via the Northern Sea Route will be increased by more than 4 times compared to last year.
During the third quarter of the year, 15 LNG cargoes from the company s Yamal LNG project were shipped eastbound to the Asian Pacific markets directly via the NSR. The eastbound shipments represented about 25% of all LNG dispatched from Yamal LNG during the three-month period.
"A current fleet of 13 Arc7 ice-class tankers along with lower ice-class designated tankers to transport LNG cargoes support the Yamal LNG project. The full compliment of 15 Arc7 ice-class tankers are expected to be in operation by end of 2019, which will increase the number of direct LNG deliveries eastbound via the NSR," Novatek explained.
"The increase of LNG delivered eastbound via the NSR confirms the commercial priority of the Asia-Pacific region as a strategic direction for future deliveries of Novatek s LNG," Lev Feodosyev, NOVATEK s First Deputy Chairman of the Management Board, noted.
"Developing further the navigational efficiency via the NSR combined with the construction of LNG transshipment complexes in Kamchatka and Murmansk will optimize the company s logistics chain."
The update comes on the back of the sanctions imposed by the U.S. in late September against two COSCO companies, COSCO Shipping Tanker (Dalian) Co. and COSCO Shipping Tanker (Dalian) Seaman & Ship Management Co., for allegedly transporting Iranian crude.
Subsequently, Teekay LNG s tanker venture, the Yamal LNG Joint Venture, has qualified as a "blocked person" under the U.S. sanctions, as COSCO Dalian is a direct 50% shareholder of China LNG Shipping (Holding) Limited (CLNG), which in turn holds a 50% stake in Yamal LNG Joint Venture.
As a result of CLNG s 50% interest, the Yamal LNG Joint Venture also currently qualifies as a "blocked person" under OFAC rules.
Novatek earlier explained that these specific LNG shipments are not related to the sanctions imposed on the COSCO companies, adding that the issue to resolve this situation "is a business relations matter between Teekay LNG and China LNG Shipping (Holdings) Limited."
