India: Restart seafarers pension: GSAI to govt.
The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) on Saturday gave a wee s ultimatum to the government to restart pension scheme for the retired seafarers and their widows.
"If the government doesnt reply to our demands within a week, we will take the protests to each and every village," warned GSAI.
The pension scheme has been stopped since October 2019, for almost a year now.
The GSAI said that the retired seafarers and their widows begged the MLAs of their constituencies to restart the scheme which have gone on deaf ears.

Ship collision in Melaka waters.
"Maritime rage" is suspected to be the cause of a ship collision that is under investigation, says the Melaka government.
Melaka agriculture, agro-based, entrepreneur development and cooperative committee chairman Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee said he asked the Marine Department to investigate whether the collision was a deliberate act or an accident.

India: Container crisis could last a further three months.
India's container shortage could last another three months, as congestion hits Colombo and shippers call for tighter regulation of freight rates.
Worldwide Logistics (India) said the acute space problem over the past few weeks was the result of increased demand, reduced imports and port rotation issues.
"Vessels which were idling during the corona-lockdown were re-routed to more profitable trades on the transpacific, leading to supply and demand gaps for major intra-Asia trading routes," the forwarder explained.

India: DG Shipping allows re-opening of maritime training institutes.
The Directorate-General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has allowed the re-opening of post-sea and pre-sea maritime training institutes (MTIs) that were closed in March after the outbreak of the pandemic.
DG Shipping has permitted opening up of MTIs with a maximum of one-third of the permitted batch strength, which will require changes in the e-governance module of the Directorate for uploading batch details, generation of digital certificates and biometric attendance during practicals, among others, DG Shipping said in its order of October 1.

New canal triggers major dispute between Egypt and UAE.
The planned digging of a new canal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates has reportedly enraged Egypt, which views the project as a threat to its strategic Suez Canal.
According to a report by al-Araby al-Jadeed (The New Arab) online newspaper on Friday, a major dispute between the UAE and Egypt has erupted due to "preliminary arrangements and consultations between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv regarding the digging of a new water canal, similar to the Suez Canal, connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean".

Italy: Cocaine bust on board bulk carrier, one crew arrested.
Bulk carrier ADRIENNE arrived at Ancona port, Italy, on Sep 30, from Brazil via Spain, and shortly after arrival, was searched by anti-drug police team with trained dogs. 216 kilo of cocaine, wrapped in packages, were found in one of ship s storerooms, one crew was arrested. Investigation under way. Understood police was tipped off on incoming cocaine shipment.

COSCO Panamax grounding confirmed, Newport UPDATES refloated.
Oct 3 UPDATE: Was refloated at around 1300 UTC Oct 2 with the assistance of 7 tugs, anchored near grounding site for inspection. At around 0250 UTC Oct 3 started moving to Norfolk port, escorted or towed by, tugs.
0330 UTC Oct 2: Still aground with 4-5 tugs at her side, trying to refloat her.
1630 UTC UPDATE: Confirmed aground, starboard list and aft tilt, resting on sandy bottom. CG reportedly waiting for salvage plan. Understood refloating preparations under way.

Oil tanker that caught fire towed out of Sri Lankan waters.
An oil tanker which carried crude oil from Kuwait to India and caught fire off Sri Lanka s East Coast is being towed out of the country s waters despite a pending marine pollution claim lodged by Sri Lanka, an official said on Saturday.
The Panama-registered New Diamond tanker was carrying 270,000 metric tons of crude oil from Kuwait to India when a boiler explosion in its engine room caused fire on September 3.
