India: Chennai Port Trust handles record number of containers
The Chennai Port Trust on Wednesday said that its container handling has hit an all-time record of 8,397 TEUS (Twenty-foot equivalent unit) surpassing the previous record of 7,209 teus in 2016.
"Container Vessel M.V APL England, berthed at Chennai Port's second container terminal M/s Chennai International Terminal on December 4 has recorded landmark performance by handling 8,397 teus comprising of 4,276 import and 4,121 export teus and sailed on December 8," The Chennai Port Trust said in a press release.

UN, ILO Decisions Put Pressure On Governments Over Crew Change
Pressure is mounting on governments to designate seafarers as 'key workers' to avoid the prospect of forced labour and human rights abuses in major supply chains this holiday season, say representatives from the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF).
The United Nations General Assembly and the International Labour Organization (ILO) in the last week passed landmark resolutions (UN resolution / ILO resolution) calling for urgent action by national governments on the crew change crisis.

Up to 200 containers lost by mega container ship in North Sea
Some 200 container are believed to be lost by container ship north of Schiermonnikoog island, Wadden Islands, North sea. Containers were first spotted by Dutch fishermen, later Dutch CG Command confirmed fishermen report. Containers are believed to be lost by Ultra Large Container Vessel MUNICH MAERSK on Dec 2, some 90 nm north of Schiermonnikoog island.

Car carrier Master medevaced by helicopter, Pacific
Car carrier TARAGO requested urgent medical assistance to ship’s Master, who was suffering from severe chest pain and gastritis, on Dec 7, off Cabo San Lucas, Baja California peninsula, Mexico, Pacific. 48-year old Norwegian Captain was medevaced by helicopter and transferred to hospital.

Bulk carriers collided in Kaohsiung Harbor
Bulk carrier NEW SILK ROAD 1 collided with bulk carrier LUCKY PIONEER in Kaohsiung Harbor in the afternoon Dec 9, while both ships were under way, maneuvering. NEW SILK ROAD 1 struck LUCKY PIONEER stern with her bow, both ships sustained damages and were berthed for survey and investigation.

Bulk carrier ALGOMA INTREPID ran aground at around 1200 UTC Dec 9 while exiting Welland Canal Colborne, about to enter Lake Erie, Great Lakes. As of 1830 UTC, the ship was still aground, with tug at her side.

122 seafarers kidnapped in Gulf of Guinea this year
With the latest piracy attack involving the kidnap of four seafarers, 122 crew members have so far been abducted from vessels in the Gulf of Guinea this year.
The latest piracy attack involving a crude oil tanker is estimated by Dryad Global (UK-based maritime security firm) as the 24th confirmed kidnapping incident in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea in 2020.

Wages of Indian seafarers revised upwards by up to 40 pc
Wages of Indian seafarers have been revised upwards by up to 40 per cent retrospectively from January this year, following signing of a pact between the Indian National Shipowners" Association (INSA) and seafarers bodies NUSI and FSUI, a release said on Wednesday.
The wage agreement signed on December 7 under the aegis of the 47th National Maritime Board (India) will remain in effect till December 31, 2023, and will benefit over 50,000 ratings and petty officers serving on Indian ships of foreign-going, home trade, offshore vessels and harbour tugs, it said.

MPA Supports ABS-Led Additive Manufacturing Project
ABS is to lead an additive manufacturing (AM) Joint Industry Partnership (JIP) after securing backing from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
The JIP will see ShipParts.com and 3D Metalforge develop valve and pump parts for use on board a PACC Offshore Services Holdings (POSH) Offshore Support Vessel, and ABS develop a certification process that is scalable to streamline AM material approval for safe use.

Wartsila delivers LNG crew training simulator system for Anglo-Eastern
This is a new product for the marine market - a result of the increased adoption of LNG fuel by fleet owners and the consequential need to ensure crews are sufficiently trained in operating LNG-fuelled vessels. The order was placed in June 2020 and the project was completed in October 2020.
This voyage simulator is based on Wartsila s gas valve unit and LNGPac fuel storage, supply and control system technologies, and includes all auxiliary systems needed in connection with the LNG fuel supply.

Stornoway deep water port to create 200 jobs as part of masterplan
Rural economy secretary Fergus Ewing has confirmed £49 million of investment from a number of partners to strengthen transport links and support a range of industries in the Outer Hebrides.
Work is due to start next summer on the project, one of the biggest undertaken in the islands and is part of Stornoway Port Authoritys (SPA s) 20-year masterplan.
